Where have all the Reach Flights gone?
After rather a flurry this week, seem to have been none today each time I've peered at ADSB... Thanksgiving? Can see a C-5 heading into Ramstein from the mid-East...

Another An12 - about 10 miles west of us but still clearly audible - came over yesterday as well but even louder then as it was overhead. A deeper drone than the Atlas. Now over the Pyrenees. I'm surprised Treaders hasn't been on - perhaps he was stuck in the pub again!

I was trudging through a muddy field near Caterham (nervously eying the cloud base and wondering about snow) and could hear the AN12. Also heard but didn't see the C-5 that came over at 18000 from Ramstein around 1445, and only started climbing once past Southampton. Strange...! Believe me, I was tempted to divert into the Fox on Coulsdon Common, brrrrr!
There was another An-12 UR-CBG came the opposite way after midnight last night right overhead central London, St Johns Newfoundland to Ostend, which I suspected to be returning, but this afternoon it was still on the ground at Ostend, and has since departed eastbound and is currently overhead Austria. So not that. My hunch is it was another An-12 which had been given a climb and was on full power, possibly with the prop syncs not working fully. I feel I may have even heard it do a power change and throttle back at top of climb. But which one ...
The midnight one had routed Newark-St Johns-Ostend yesterday, which in a 55-year old 4-engined turboprop must be a long, loud haul. I notice the Antonovs tend to use St Johns rather than Gander as their eastern Canada point.
Ah, thank you. Though quite why a flight from Ostend to Agadir would route over Lambourne, where it finally seems to have turned southwards, is a bit of a mystery in itself.

Your AN-12 today was UR-CTJ MEM3096 out of Ostend and it headed south from OH London down towards Africa.

Allowing for the vagaries of the flight trackers, the course change made by today's flight when over Brentwood was fairly abrupt.
Those An-12s are the modern equivalent of yesterday's tramp steamers, going where the work is at short notice, so it's possible that it was bound for Ireland or over the Pond when Meridian got a more lucrative offer and decided that the Moroccan contract was a better bet.

Loud indeed; I wonder what height it was. Here at Canary Wharf I actually thought at first it was a turboprop missed approach at London City.
And the old girl did sound wonderful - if more than a little eerie. Real sound from the past.

It was still climbing slowly till abeam Guildford - was at 24000 then.
My muddy field was about a mile north of the the M25/M23 junction, sound was a bit muted 12 miles away but still very distinctive!

AN-12
Cremeegg
New on this part of forum, was in ROC, keen on aircraft spotting. Saw a AN-12 heading towards Stanstead, heard it first and thought what the hell is that, flew very low over trees. Sorry it was about a month ago - catching up! Live in Long Melford, South Suffolk.
(ROC, Royal Observer Corp).

Introduction to thread and todays sighting!
Moved to West Suffolk 2 years ago, lots of aircraft activity here, looking forward to sharing sightings and learning! Ex ROC, aircraft changed a lot since ROC days! Very noisy, heavy, twin rotor blade helicopter passed over this evening, heading North towards Stanstead. Could hardly see it due to the dark, it was very noisy!

Often think jet noise is jet noise but sometimes something sounds a little different from the usual modern Heathrow traffic. One off the Biggin hold this morning caught my attention, not visible in the cloud but definitely a bit noisier. Ah, Jordanian A310!
707s were always very distinctive on their way out of Heathrow...
