Help UAL Capt Al Haynes Save his Daughter

Ladies and Gentlemen,
The following note was posted on our company website. It involves ret Capt Al Haynes, the hero captain that landed the crippled DC10 in Iowa with total hydraulic failure.

Hero Pilot Trying To Help Save Daughter's Life

As the captain of United Flight 232, SeaTac-based pilot Al Haynes helped save 184 people when he guided his disabled plane in for a crash landing back in 1989.

Now he's asking for your help to save one more life.

Capt. Haynes says he didn't have time to be scared when his plane went down that day in Sioux City, Iowa. But now, he is scared because his only daughter will die without a desperately needed bone marrow transplant.

When Laurie Haynes Arguello, 39, was diagnosed with aplastic anemia two years ago the first thing she did, was call her father, Capt. Al Haynes.

"I just called dad and said, 'What do we do?'" Arguello said.

After two years of doctors appointments and transfusions, Arguello now needs a bone marrow transplant to survive.

She has a donor, but not the more than $200,000 needed to pay for an operation no fully covered by insurance.

It's a concern that keeps her awake at night.

"My son's nine. My husband and I have been together for over 20 years. I have a lot to live for," she said.

She has a lot of support from family and friends, who have launched a fund-raising campaign to save Arguello's life.

For Capt. Al Haynes, Laurie's is another life he desperately wants to save.

"It's another one, yeah, very important to me but, it's just another one. But if I can do it, I will. Any way we can," he said.

Capt. Haynes says besides dealing with the recent deaths of his wife and son -- and now facing the illness of his daughter -- his greatest challenge was overcoming the survivor's guilt he felt after the crash

HOW TO HELP Make a donation to National Foundation For Transplants at: NFT for Lauria Arguello P. O. Box 7781 Covington, WA 98042

Or go to www.transplants.org. look for Patient Campaigns and click on Laurie Arguello. (Editor’s Note: Click on the link in the upper left to find Laurie’s name.)

**International Donations**

We became aware of this problem earlier today and our web host technicians
will be correcting it this afternoon. Actually, we had received some
on-line international donations successfully, but they all had to put in
fake states. We weren't aware of the situation prior to this time because we
normally don't receive many donations from outside the United States.
Our web-site donations page will be down for about one hour this afternoon
while we make the adjustment.
Thank you for support of the NFT campaign for Laurie Arguello.
Sincerely,
Janice Hill

Can somebody who knows about these things set up a UK account, preferably with gift aid status, and then transfer the proceeds to the USA?

paulo 23rd Dec 2003 07:15

For those of you that don't know (is there anyone?) the amazing story, by coincidence here's something I posted recently...

Capt. Haynes Story

Top stuff. Haynes that is, not me. ;)

I have just donated to the fund. It seems the least we can do for the daughter of such a brave and courageous man. Come on fellows. Send something and then let everyone know that you have done so to encourage others. This man has suffered enough for one lifetime. Merry Christmas, and may the Lord bless him and his daughter.

Lu Zuckerman 23rd Dec 2003 07:56

A problem with the website

I just sent in a donation but the website is setup for donations only from the USA. I had to select California as my home state in order for the donation to be accepted. I contacted the webmaster to tell her to modify the listing of states to include all Canadian Provinces as well as other countries as well. Hopefully this change will be made in the near future.

As soon as the UK is added I'm in..

My thoughts and best wishes go to Capt Haynes and his daughter.

Wing Commander Fowler 23rd Dec 2003 15:49

Agreed - set up the UK end and I'm in... Danny - any way you can help set up a short term account for this purpose we can contribute to?

Jordan D 23rd Dec 2003 16:38

I second that ... would really like to help, even if I am a poor student!

I reckon that if for just one day, all UAL captains made an announcement that they were doing a collection during the flight, you'd rack up enough for the operation and for a nice recuperative break to boot.

I know of some crewmembers who have 'pet' charities & collect for it on their flights. When punters are told that it's for a guy who helped save many lives, the 'There but for the Grace... ' would kick in & it'd be rollin' in.

I'm sure Mr Tilton wouldn't mind, given who it's for.

cools 23rd Dec 2003 21:01

The site will take only requires a USA Zip Code at the moment
anyone will do so if your outside the US simply use a friends or Hotels ZIP. Back to the top!!
"What the cockpit team of United Flight 232 accomplished has never been replicated. The National Transportation Safety Board performed a number of simulations and was not able to get the plane on the ground safely. McDonnell Douglas, which manufactured the DC-10, and United Airlines simulated 45 flights under the same conditions of Flight 232 and did not have one successful landing."
There was a great team with him then and he needs a great team with him now

Max Angle 23rd Dec 2003 21:29

Most people who use ebay have a PayPal account, they are free and very easy to use. Perhaps we could set something up using that system. Very happy to make a donation.

RampTramp 23rd Dec 2003 23:19

I had the not only the honour to hear Al Haynes speak earlir this year but got to take him out to dinner afterwards. A delightful gentleman who, obvoiusly, doesn't deserve this.

If it can be sorted to pay ex Europe, then I'm in but, being only computer semi-literate and not having a paypal account, help!

The way is clear

PLEASE TAKE NOTE. THIS IS HOW TO MAKE A DONATION IF YOU DON'T LIVE IN THE USA

As I stated in my post above I made a donation from Canada but I had to indicate I lived in California in order to satisfy the formula on the internet site. I sent an E-mail to the organization telling them of the shortcoming on the web site. Here is the reply.

Dear Lu:

Thank you very much for your comments. We already receive on-line donations from all over the world and I had not even noticed that they all had to indicate a state, along with their complete address. However, please be assured we have no difficulty in understanding the location of the international donors, since their complete address is included. I will talk with our web host people today to see if they can make the adjustment you requested. I just received your on-line donation and have your full Canadian address: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Thank you for supporting the NFT campaign for Laurie Haynes Arguello, and for taking the time to let me know of the donation page problem.

Please Help get the message out

To all concerned,

Please feel free to post my original message at your company websites. I personally met Capt Al Haynes and he is every bit the person everyone says. This afternoon, the donation website will be set up for international donations.
Thanks for all the help. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.

Winstun 24th Dec 2003 05:03

If I were a heavy UAL captain, I would be a little embarassed seeking donations. 200K is less than 1 year's salary, and I am quite sure he could manage this himself. Or with the help of a few of his UAL captain collegues or UA232 survivors. Over Christmas, spare a thought and some coin for the over thirty thousand children than die every day from greed :*

Capt Homesick 24th Dec 2003 05:24

For all Winstun's doubts, I doubt raising the money is that easy. How many retired people can raise anything like a year's salary from their prior occupations? For that matter, how many people in full time work can do that? Furthermore, I suspect Captain Haynes' entire family have already dug deeply into their pockets...

bonvol 24th Dec 2003 05:56

Just ignore Winstun.

A fellow pilot needs help and we are going to help him. Simple as that.

No problems donating from Australia now.

Tony_EM 24th Dec 2003 06:14

His inspirational achievement would be enough in itself, but his modesty, generosity (especially to others involved in that incident), humanity and integrity are beyond admiration.

My donation, if it were 10 times more than it was, would be small compared to what he gave me in terms of inspiration, and who could possible quantify what he has given to aviation through those that aspire to be that kind of pilot.

My thoughts are with his daughter wishing her a speedy recovery.

Taildragger 24th Dec 2003 06:26

Winstun

I had the doubtful pleasure of crossing swords with you a cuppla months ago. I thought you were a jerk then (Read..tosser) and certainly think you are doubly so today.
For all your bleeding heart concern for our cousins in the third world displayed before, (I am qualified to comment...PNG remember.??) you show scant concern for one of our own. Last time we faced off, you claimed you were a Pilot, but after this post I am certain you are not. You certainly don't give much info on your profile. Why not.??
If you are a family man, I desperately hope you are NEVER in the position of seeking help from your peers for something as desperately important as saving your child's life.
Have a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Cripple 7 24th Dec 2003 06:34

Is it a scam or is it for real? If this message appears on the ALPA site, it would have more credibility than of an unknown site to someone who resides outside the US.

IF YOU DOUBT THE LEGITIMACY CHECK THESE SOURCES:

IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBTS CALL STEVE AT KIROTV SEATTLE, THE PHONE NUMBER IS ON THEIR WEBSITE.

ALSO:

THE ASSOCIATION OF FLIGHT ATTENDANTS

www.unitedafa.org/news/20031212_haynes.asp

GIVE THEM A CALL, I AM SURE THEY WOULD CHECK THEIR SOURCES BEFORE MOUNTING AN APPEAL ON WEBSITE.

ALSO:

www.transplants.org look for Patient Campaigns and click on Laurie Arguello. (Click on the link in the upper left to find Laurie’s name.)

I HAVE CHECKED. HER CAMPAIGN IS ON THE SITE. GO SEE FOR YOURSELF.

My suspicions are that Capt Haynes is a hero one can be statistically assured of...

Does anyone remember a C4 documentary where they stated over 100 pilots tried his predicament in the sim and not one person survived on any flight? Or am I imagining that?

paulo 24th Dec 2003 09:38

Ummm... Black Box perhaps?

WG774 24th Dec 2003 09:46

Buy that man a large one! Memory cells fading with time...

"Darksky", if you are the same person you should check your private messages.

Blue & White 24th Dec 2003 10:57

valid website???

I must admit, I just copied the letter from the APA (Allied Pilot's [American Airlines]} website. However, I did check that the transplant website was valid.
Laurie's name is listed as a patient. Just click the website and see for yourself.

I will be honoured just to be able to help this GREAT man in any small way. To the doubters and dissenters - Why bother? if you don't have anything decent to say, then don't say anything. This type of post is not "up for discussion' it is a heartfelt plea by fellow aviators to HELP one of our own. Not just anyone, but a truly GREAT man who performed an incredible feat against insurmountable odds. Capt. Al Haynes is a living Legend and should be accorded due respect there-in.

I am sure I speak for all when I extend our heartfelt best wishes to the man and his family, and hope that the right outcome is achieved.

Regards.

Quite right DanAir1-11. The website mentions that they are having difficulty accepting donations due to the response; I didn't find any difficulty though.

If we all give up the equivalent of just one celebration drink tonight, we’ll make someone’s Christmas very, very special

In isolation we can’t make a difference, collectively we can.

Merry Xmas to one and all, but especially to those who have a heart.

Worth repeating!

How's this for an idea: Members email BALPA with the suggestion of getting some of their more "reknowned" pilots to put their signatures on a bottle of bubbly. Once a few signatures are obtained the bottle can be auctioned off and the proceeds donated to the Haynes fund.

In view of the recent months events, I can think of a few captains / FEs that have been in the media, if their signatures were obtained the bottle could reach a record price.

Also, I'm fairly confident that services could be obtained gratis from the couriers needed to transport the bottle for signing, as well as a free bottle from an established well-known retailer, on a condition they and courier get a small mention on the auction details.

Just an idea...

BayAreaLondoner 25th Dec 2003 04:30

Just posted the link on my weblog and am about to do the same on my employer's bulletin board.
I attended an AOPA Air Safety Seminar a few months ago presented by Capt. Haynes. It was very interesting and it would be nice to help his family.

Back to the top!! In solidarity with the spirit of the longhaul pilot in the red suit tonight !!! Happy Christmas to all and to AL and his daughter all the very best for 2004

SydGirl 25th Dec 2003 05:44

I shall also post this in the FA forum, as there are many FAs who are as inspired by Captain Haynes' heroism as there are pilots.

I'm honoured to be able to help (even if only in a small way!) someone who has inspired me to do greater things, and appreciate every thing I have.

It's wonderful to see the target of $250,000 is getting closer, at the time of writing they have already raised $161,000 - great to see colleagues chipping in for each other and being supportive.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Haynes family and everyone on Pprune.

I read with incredulity the mean-spirited comments of some on this thread. If you cannot add your words of support (AND a donation), then at least say NOTHING. Winstun, you in particular, and your 'crocodile tears' in regards to the worlds needy deserve contempt. nuf said.
