Fuel Prices
I saw a disturbing hike in AVGAS charges, which broke the £1.00/Litre barrier at one UK airfield when I was there on Sunday (12/3). What is the situation like at other UK airfields and, just curious, but what is the situation like on the continent at the moment. I don't usually quibble about trivial items like Fuel, but this rise is alarming and could start to hit the G/A community hard if this is a sign of what is likely to come at other airfields.
This leaves me feeling worried for the G/A community as a whole, if AVGAS prices escalate to big levels.

Isn't it about time the government lowered the tax on AVGAS? We see figures quoted by the AA that something like 80% of the cost of motor car fuel (in the UK) goes to the government in tax.
When will the UK government realise that general aviation is not just a rich man's sport and provides employment, etc. to a significant number of people.
For the amount of revenue they collect in tax from AVGAS I would have thought they could afford to slash the tax and give general aviation a welcome shot in the arm in the UK.
In summary, I don't think we should blame the oil prices so much as the penal amount of tax that we pay in the UK on AVGAS!!

Considerably more worrying than the tax on AVGAS is the news that the EU is going to tax Jet A1 (AVTUR) on domestic and inter-European flights. This is going to increase the cost of tickets = decrease the number of pax = add more costs to airline bottom lines = airlines have to cut back on staff.

It must be one of the main reasons for the huge loss of business of UK flying schools to the states.
Given a light aircraft probably uses £30/hr of Avgas - if the tax was slashed and this came down to £10/hr, that would give the UK flying schools a huge boost if they could pass that on to their customers. It would cut £800 off the cost of a PPL!
I run on Mogas and own two very large jerry-cans (and an aircraft that burns 2 gallons an hour) but this is hardly an option for everybody. Also MOGAS is getting worse and worse.
