"Sriwijaya Air : Indonesian carrier is still in discussions with authorities over routes into Malaysia (KL & Penang).
Sriwijaya Air's district manager Heru Tony Hardjanto confirmed interest was in the Medan/KL and Medan/Penang routes and is hoping to start international ops within 6 months.

Currently serving 10 destinations domestically throughout Indonesia, with 12 full-service B737-200s, Malaysia will be the airline's maiden international destination."

Sriwijaya's fleet is still 6 732s last time I checked. But they would have got more recently, but not another 6!

Doing MES-KUL and MES-PEN would be a "significant departure from it's business plan"...

"19. Royal Air Service, Bali, Indonesia. B733/A310
20. Top Air, 732/722/MD80
21. Gatari Air Charter, 5x F28
22. Satrio Mataram Airlines, recruiting, no other info.
23. Effatha Papua Air"

Scrap #19... they seem to have disappeared.
#20 is in limbo... again...
#21 has no clients.
#22 no other news
#23 plan Jun25 commence ops, but gossip has it that it may not be flying after the recent increase in domestic fuel price.

"33. Linus Air, Indonesian, 722/732/146
34. Cendrawasih Air, Indonesia, Twotter Ops
35. ASCO, Indonesia. F50/C402.
36. Kakoak Air, East Timor, using Merpati C212 at the moment. Started March 05."

#33 Linus is brain dead but still got a heartbeat. 727/737 ops shut down quickly, awaiting 146 ops SUB-MDC-TTE-SOQ-FKS and back... which in my personal opinion will be an entertaining saga.

#34 is up for sale.
#35 No clients. F50 ops plans may turn out to be a hoax, initially "to be from Australia" but checking there, no one's letting them go.
#36 seems to be running OK.

Add:
37. Lorena Air... now actively recruiting cabin attendants. Personally I think the boss is dreaming but if she has the money, we may see it fly...

No further disclosable info regarding to "X" and "Y"...

#25 Virgin Macau would appear to be in some doubt after Virgin Blue's announcement of 'refocusing' it's planning away from Asia. This had been widely predicted as a result of the recent Corrigan partial takeover.

OK,

From this newspaper article is would appear that Oasis Hong Kong and WOW Macau are still in the process of starting up.

Some random bits and pieces............

Number 8. Spicejet is quoted as \'SPICEJET, a re-invention of a domestic carrier first know as Modiluft and then re-named Royal Airways\'. and to operate from Delhi.

Number 25. Virgin Macau appears to be dead in the water. \' A spokeswoman for Brisbane-based Virgin Blue told media the airline, now majority-owned by Australian transport group, Patrick Corp. “examined the feasibility of a joint venture operation for several months. In the end, we could not reach an agreement”. \'

Number 16. Hong Kong Express and Number 26. Golden Dragon would appear to be associated entities. \'Golden Dragon Airlines is believed to be associated with Macau’s legendary casino king, Stanley Ho, through his helicopter company, East Asia Airlines. Hong Kong Express – formerly Helicopters Hong Kong, another new airline set to commence flying from Hong Kong to several Mainland cities – is expected to manage Golden Dragon.\' \'Golden Dragon\'s approved destinations also largely avoid competition with Hong Kong Express, a Hong Kong-based budget airline also controlled by Ho, which has been granted rights to fly to Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing and Ningbo.
``Both companies will not complete with each other,\'\' said Hong Kong Express chief executive Andrew Tse.
It will lease two 75-seat Embraer aircraft this year and plans to schedule flights next year, said the source. ``Golden Dragon will act as a regional airline in the future, not a low-cost carrier,\'\' he said.\'

This may be a new one. (To replace the Virgin proposal?) \'Air Macau along with two partners plans to start a budget airline at the end of the year in which it will invest US$30 million (HK$234 million) for a 51 percent stake. The new carrier will fly 22 mainland and regional routes with four aircraft to be delivered next year.\'

Plus this one. 'Another new airline already off the ground and bringing more jobs to the market is CR Airways. But it is not a budget carrier.
Having started out as a helicopter charter outfit, it now flies two 50-seater jets to China's secondary cities, such as Jinan and Nanning, holiday packages to Laoag and Clark in the Philippines, and charters to Phuket, Langkawi, Danang and Siem Reap. The carrier prefers the label "low operating cost" carrier offering "value for money" fares to destinations that would otherwise require passengers to catch two flights through major hubs.
A spokeswoman for the company said: "We are following the model of West Jet and East Jet in Canada. It's a direct point-to-point service to cities in China."
Running at a healthy 80 per cent capacity, CR Airways is already looking to expand, acquiring 70-seater aircraft to cope with demand and extending its network to mainland cities including Zhejiang, Changsha, Chongqing, Guilin, Haikou, Hangzhou, Kunming, Nanjing, Sanya, Tianjin and Wuhan. '

Update time.

5. Okay
6. Spring
and
7. United Eagle
are now all operating.

Three more startups reported in China.
Aukai Airlines, Western Airlines and Eastern Express. No details known.

CR out of Hong Kong yesterday announced new routes to cities in Hainan, presumably implying expansion.

Saw reference to a Thai budget carrier 'One-Two-GO'. Nothing more known about this one.

Plus, of course, Valueair and Jetstar Asia out of Singapore have 'merged'.

Re: Number 16..............

'August 3, 2005

Hong Kong Express, the territory's most recent start-up carrier, has agreed landing rights to five Chinese second-tier cities and hopes to secure more destinations, a company official said on Wednesday.

The carrier, which does not fly anywhere at present, is expected to fly passengers to the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou starting mid-September, with subsequent services to Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqing and Ningbo throughout the latter months of 2005 and early 2006.

In the future, the new start-up will also consider seeking landing rights to other secondary cities in China, including Haikou, Sanya, Shantou and Zhengzhou, said Andrew Tse, chief executive officer of Hong Kong Express.

While the airline's expansion plans are centered on China, it also hopes to secure landing rights to Ko Samui in Thailand, Tse said.

"Hong Kong is very weak in terms of connecting to the mainland," said Tse. "We have the opportunity here of launching increased domestic flight services from Hong Kong to the mainland."

Tse is a primary shareholder in privately-owned Hong Kong Express along with tycoon Stanley Ho.

The carrier, which will operate a total of four 76 seat Embraer planes by 2006, is expected to buy two aircraft each year and cover 12-15 cities in China in the next five years. Each Embraer comes with a price tag of about USD$20 million.

Surprising that the "biggest" of the proposed start ups havent yet made top the list.

Delhi based INDIGO (different from both Indus and Go who are different) had made som e news with a "100" A320 order at Paris this year. Unlike many other airlines whose promoters range from vanilla farmers to textile barons not to speak of the beer industry, these guys have some pedigree- Indian partner is Interglobe, for long established in the travel trade in India, also has Rakesh Gangwal of US Airways/World span fame and they just announced the appointment of another US airways top man as the head.

Rumoured to start end of this year or early next year.

Also heard "East West" wich was one of the casualities of the first indian boom on the 1990s are now trying to start again - ofcourse there is a question of some "unpaid money" to the Indian airport authorities as well as the fel suppliers, which they are reportedly trying to clear.

"Visa Airways" - Dont tell me these guys are still trying to float/ Rumours for quite a few years now - at one pointt they even had their schedules loaded in OAG.

Thanks for your input. The list is only what ppruners like you have contributed so far. This is a knowledge gathering process for all of us, in an attempt to help others.

With your knowledge of the Indian scene, could you help with an update on the Indian entries on the list? Some may be ‘dead in the water’. All could do with more detail. Any and all input is appreciated.

So far for India, we have –

2. Air India Express,www.airindiaexpress.in INDIA(18XB737-800)
8. Spicejet www.spicejet.com, India B737-800 (20 to become Royal Airways)
9. Kingfisher (www.flykingfisher.com),India A320(20),A319(3)
10. Indus Airways, India 5 leased Embraer RJ-145s
11. Go Airways, India
12. Air One, India
13. Yamuna Airways, INDIA
17. Paramount Airways,www.paramountairways.com India (Coimbatore) EMB170/190?
27. Magic Air, New Delhi, India A320or B737 ( 10)?
30. Visa Airways, India. (DHC Dash 8)
31. Crescent Air Cargo (Cargo Dedicated F50's), India

and now

41. INDIGO, India (100 A320’s)
42. East West ?? India

Thanks,

Snooze

Does India has firm plans to solve the shortage issue, I'm gussing expats may here for a bit longer than 1 yr.

Rsoman / Left Wing,

Since you guys are the local experts

Do Indian kids want to be pilots as a career, or is it like rest of Asia want a easy desk job and make money ?

Is there a true passion for aviation or lure of big money? I can see the pay sclaes went up for local FOs.

Just want to learn more about the nation of 1 Bil no wise cracks pls.

Air India Express - Air India's low cost wing using B737NGs (3 currently). Targetting price sensitive travellers in the India Middle East and India -SIN/KUL markets both of which are huge . Currently operating only to MCT,AUH and DXB from basically the Kerala airports (TRV/COK and CCJ) and a few flights from BOM and DEL as well. Things will get warm once Air Arabia starts operating to Kerala soon. Next phase of expansion will be from MAA/TRZ to SIN and KUL where there is another distinct price sensitive segment existing.

Spice Jet- Indian LCC operating domestic routes. Currently operating three leased 737 NGs from its base in DEL. Origins from former "Modiluft" which went bust in the mid 1990s. Top management has some ex Can Jet people. Operates mainly business routes such as DEL AMD or AMD BOM. Although an LCC, has avoided the pitfalls of competing for "popularity stakes" with other LCCs by offering unsustainable fares.

Kingfisher - Promoted by a industrialist with deep pockets. Has professional management running the airline, a mix of expats and Indian professionals. Uses A320s (currently 3) but operates only 3 routes - BLR - BOM. BLR- DEL and just starting BOM-DEL. Not positioned as an LCC, however in many cases their fares are as comppetitive as their LCC competitors. Pulled off a major coup, taking its competitors by surprise when it got into a maintenance agreement with public sector Indian Airlines (a big A320 operator) for its aircraft. Has ordered A330s as well and announced plans to float a US based company to operate services from US to India making use of the open skies agreement between US and India . Current Indian rules require domestic airlines to wait for five years before starting International services.

Of the rest, Paramount and Air One are both based in the south, in CJB and BLR respectively. Both plan to operate thinner, underserved routes , the former on a all business configuration. Runs the risk of being swamped under by the biggies like Jet and Indian Airlines who may dump capacity on their proposed routes and slash fares to boot!

Go- promoted by a big Indian business group in BOM. Talking for a long time - even has an ex Sky Europe person as the top guy but plans does not seem to have crystallised much....

The dark horse is IndiGo- Unlike most others who are only too ready to talk big, these guys are keeping a low profile. But as mentioned, good business background, the promoters understand the travel business inside out and the Indian promoter - "Interglobe" holds the General Sales Agency for a number of airlines like Delta, Virgin and United for many many years in addition to being the NMC for Galileo in India.

Regarding aviation as a career - the answer is YES. Till now it was a difficult scenario. After the first boom went BUST in the mid 1990s, for many years, the market has remained stagnant. Now things have turned on their head. The economy is steadily growing, and the LCCs have brought the fares down. India has a middle class which is steadily growing with increasing disposable incomes. Distances remain huge and surface alternatives (Train/Driving) are not practical in most cases. For instance between Bangalore and Hyderabad in the south, a distance of 350 miles, while the flight takes one hour, the quickest train takes 10 hours and drivng takes almost the same time.

There are quite a few Indians now abroad in US or Australia mainly, studying for their licences and once DGCA relaxes some of its non sensical rules for conversion (as it is bound to sooner than latter), then you will have more people taking up flying.
As for Indian flight schools - well- where do you get the instructors???

To conclude yes the way things are growing, I think the expats will be here for much longer than one year.
