More on Okay Airlines, Beijing.

Avflash are quoting:

The first private airlines are taking flight in China and they'll need at least 8,000 pilots over the next 10 years. Since there is virtually no GA system to produce those pilots, the airlines must look abroad. "China is short of captains and co-pilots," said Liu Jieyin, chairman of Okay Airways, China's first privately held airline. "We offer young foreign pilots an opportunity to grow." The airline recently hired seven young pilots, including a Canadian and two Swiss as well as four from Hong Kong, and Liu said there are plans to hire more as the fledgling airline's fleet of six leased 737s starts competing for business with the three state-owned airlines. First officers will earn about $2,500 a month.

I used to fly a KingAir for $4000.00usd/month. I suppose its all relative, I dont think they will get many qualified guys for that salary, unless they are guys who want time on type and then leave after a year or 6 months.

Maybe now is the time that Chinese Pilots go fo higher wages. Chinas economy is still growing and its wage scale is no doubt being left behind in this dynamic market place.

Some "late mail" ex New Straits Times, Tues March 22nd:

(Not a new start as such domestically, but is launching International ops)

Sriwijaya Air : Indonesian carrier is still in discussions with authorities over routes into Malaysia (KL & Penang).
Sriwijaya Air's district manager Heru Tony Hardjanto confirmed interest was in the Medan/KL and Medan/Penang routes and is hoping to start international ops within 6 months.

Currently serving 10 destinations domestically throughout Indonesia, with 12 full-service B737-200s, Malaysia will be the airline's maiden international destination.

Nok Air (already established) also planning expansion into KL next month, as are Jet Airways (India) and Air Sahara (India) latter this year. Shenzhen Airlines already flying to KL from early this year.

PS AirAsia starting Manilla flights (Clark Angeles Airport) April 5th.

Heard from unconfirmed sources that the Indian Operators are now "allowed to take pilots with foreign licences" including FO's ! with working rights.

Know for a fact that they are recruiting Captains and C&T's on a contract basis.

Any comments ?! much appreciated in advance.

ucfthug4u,
Hate to say this, but Jetstar Asia has been operating since mid 2004 hence it is not part of this list "26 New Start Ups this year" being 2005. Thanks for your contribution though. If any of the above airlines have started last year they cant be put on the list. Im am not sure on the Indian ones.

A bit more info on a couple of the starters............

Low-cost for the long-haul

By Charles Anderson

Two veterans of the Hong Kong aviation scene, Steve Miller and Andrew Pyne, are involved in attempts to start long-distance, low-cost airlines.
Miller, an aviation consultant who was the first chief executive of Hong Kong Dragon Airlines when it was founded 20 years ago, has been named as chief executive of Oasis Hong Kong Airlines.
The new carrier will concentrate on long-haul routes from Hong Kong International Airport. Backers are reported to include an American property developer and one of Hong Kong’s top electronics moguls.
The airline, which aims to launch by the year-end using a small fleet of Boeing B747-400s or Airbus A340-300s, is to target tour groups and holiday travellers looking for low-priced flights to Europe. North American cities may be added later.
Pyne, head of international affairs at Cathay Pacific Airways until last year, is a director of Macau Eagle Aviation Services, which plans to launch WOW Macau by early autumn. It is looking to lease Boeing 767s and 757s and is exploring the availability of routes under a possible agreement with Air Macau, which has first call on them as the city’s home carrier. Virgin Blue has also been wooing Air Macau over the 'formation of a joint-venture, low-cost carrier there.
Talks were said to be under way, at the time of writing, with both Macau and Hong Kong over which would become its base. If WOW Macau chooses the latter, its name will be WOW Asia.

This news item.

Is this another one?

\'CR Airways, has launched its first China scheduled service, to Nanning in Guangxi province, flying twice daily, three times a week. It plans to follow soon with Jinan and Wengzhou and said it will add secondary cities that need point-to-point services for business travellers. Dragonair does not operate to those first three destinations.

CR Airways, owned by Hong Kong business-man Robert Yip, is currently operating two 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200s, which it plans to swap for larger CRJ700s. It runs charter services to Laoag, the Philippines, Siem Reap, Phuket, Langkawi and Danang in Vietnam.\'

Thumbs up

Star Flyer - an A320 operation kicking off later this year, or early next year, from the new airport in Kitakyushu (northern Kyushu......just north of Fukuoka), initially with 3 aircraft. They are supposedly paying USD14k/month for Captains.
Recruiting through several contract companies.

The list grows and grows...

Looks like I missed one that's already running now...
Lintas Nusantara/Linus... now flying 722/732 and soon 146s... however looks like they're going bust soon too...

FlyCold:
Effatha Papua Air is at:
"Menara Dea, Jl. Mega Kuningan Barat I, Jakarta-Selatan." My fiancee just went there last week. I'll ask for the contact number if they call her up again...

Not much else is known apart from they're going to operate ex BO/5H MD82s.

The way things are at the moment... for Indonesia=
1. Lintas Nusantara/Linus. Already flying last month.
2. Top Air = Still in limbo. Aircraft and crew ready, no news on AOC.
3. Gatari Air Charter, already operating, where and for who no one knows.
4. Satrio Mataram Airlines, recruiting, but still no info. Unlikely to start 2005.
5. Efatha Papua Air, currently recruiting, MD82s. Office details above.
6. Cendrawasih Air, Twotter operator, current plans in limbo as finances dried up.
7. ASCO. F50 operations planned, subject to CASR121 type supplement being approved. Looking at September 2005. Timika base.
8. "X" Air, with Singaporean finance, seeking to purchase an Indonesian AOC. A320s reported to be coming in from July, up to 5 for 2005. Recruiting, no airline name, and still looking for AOC to buy. Purchase candidate is Bali Air or Indonesian Airlines.
9. "Y" Air, local finance, seeking to purchase Indonesian AOC. "Base somewhere in Papua". Currently in financing discussion. Target start date August. F50 initial, ATR42 planned. C212 initial, to be replaced with 30 seater. F100 being offered but not decision.
10. Royal Bali Air, no further news. I heard they're having AOC difficulties.

So the list should now be...
1.Oasis HongKong Airlines HK Sar leasing 3x744?
2.Air India Express, INDIA(18XB737-800)
3. WOW MACAU Macau SAR leasing B757or A320?
