Thumbs down

Hi guys ... this forum is getting less and less popular,

maybe is it due to the August crashes and the B737 that crashes at Medan yesterday??

I think it is hard to persuade a non-interest person to become aviator nowadays.

Qualifications for new cadet Pilots

Just wanna find out those who applied for the cadet program in SIA and those who are already in training, how many of you guys are degree holders or non-degree holders.

Cheers

totally agree with u freaktrimmer,

but to a normal ppl,i think they dun even know that statistic, plus those scary crashes recently, aviation industry will indirectly suffer for the next few months.

That's not a good news for pilot wannabes like me.

Most of the cadets are graduates, regardless of nationality. Although the minimum requirement is GCE 'A' Levels or its equivalent, it is extremely rare for them to accept a cadet at the minimum requirements.

However, there are exceptions, and usually, it's because the cadets have previous flying experience or hold licences already. So far, amongst the other cadets that I know during my time, only 1 is an 'A' Level holder, amongst a group of 50-60.

That means...

Let say 2 applicant

applicant A - Only got a decent 'A' level result, did pretty well in the interview, fully understands the aviation industry, showed deep interest to be a pilot and determined character .

applicant B - Degree holder from a famous university, had rich working experience(hardworking), wanted to join SIA as cadet coz of the high pay, higher than what he is earning currently, have little or no interest in aviation.

So according to limpeh and frealtrimmer, SIA will still take applicant B without even having 2nd thought of applicant A ?

It seems that quite a few applicants fuss over hypothetical situations about who SIA (or MAS or whatever) would choose.

Apart from comparing academic results, there really isn't an objective, scientific way to predict whether a certain cadet will be more successful than the other (by the employer's yardstick).

That is why there are several rounds of interviews. If not, some machine would just score and select you.

If you have the the time to conjure up situations about how you might do, compared to some imaginary applicant, then you probably lack the confidence to complete the training and be a useful pilot. Of course, if you are cocky about yourself, you will also be disqualified.

Do you really think that the interviewers (from Flt Ops, not the HR people) cannot smell someone with no passion or is faking it?

Just be yourself, instead of trying to second guess what the interviewer is looking for.

The Flt Ops folks have interviewed literally tens of thousands or aspiring cadets over the years and they DO know what they are looking for.

Hey Guys,

I guess if you are an 'A' level or diploma holder, they prolly will put you under the bottom of their list. Like for my case, I'm a diploma holder, which maybe explain after more than 2 months, I'm still waiting for my course. Just my 2 cents.

WhhiteOak,

I think academic qualification just played a part, not sums up the whole thing, your peformance from the interviews and those test will show what kind of personality u are. They will choose they person they need,as Lithgow said, they can 'smell' what kind of person you are...

When I was at my 1st interview,i did mentioned to the interviewers that I am a little surprised that SIA did called me for the interview ( I am just a Diploma holder ) ,the capt said to me, 'what we advertised is just the basic, there are other qualities that we are looking for,a pilot is a very unique job, although you are not an 'A' student ( he took a look at my application form ),if you got the qualities we are looking for,we will still need you '

cheers ....

I think you will find that wcj8638 is on the money. SIA will look for certain qualities, it would seem that they generally find these qualities in degree holders, BUT that doesn't mean that those same qualities are not present in non-degree holders.
Over a period of ten years in SIA, as a captain, I flew with a very large number of F/Os and I doubt if even half of them had degrees.

Hi White Oak,

Think I quite agree with what wcj8638 said.

Heard that how soon the call-up is depends on a complex matrix of scores computed on your overall selection performance. In other words, if ppl (in later batches) constantly outscore you, the later your call-up will be. Not exactly sure how true this is, but it do make sense to me...

There are cases of whereby only one out of six selected from an 'earlier' batch of interview, and 'five' out of say eight selected from a later batch, being called up together for the same course. which makes you wonder if the logic above really applies...

Just my two (not necessarily correct) cents, folks.

Hi blue eagle,

Pls check your pm.

Thks and regards!

Hi,

The written rule is that cadet pilots should be 26 at the time of application. Are there any cases where Singaporeans are accepted at the age of 25+?

Is it true that as long as RSAF gives the 'clearance', SIA can still call someone below 26 up?

Thanks!
