Regarding lasik, i've also had this confirmed by both the caas med board staffs, and an eye surgeon from snec.

I'll be doing my lasik end of this month, and if everything goes through smoothly, I will be sending in my cadet pilot application june next year. Maybe i'll be able to see some of you guys if everything turns out well

Thanks Limpeh and aarongth for the info. I am seriously considering taking the BAv(ATP) course at Massey after my As. Well now i gotta aim for 3 As with at least 2 Cs in 2 subjects. Wow. Not gonna be easy.

One more question. I currently hold a valid Singapore RT Operator License. So I don't think this will require me to take the RT paper again right? Or is there a RT paper and Prac specifically for ATP Pilots?

Thanks

BlazerFlyer:

No, you do not need to take the R/T paper again.

Blazer,

I am not trying to discourage you from going to MASI but you should seriously consider your options if you are not selected by SIA. I have heard of quite a few MASI graduates failing the second interview.
What happens then? If you are Singaporean, what good will a CPL/IR or aviation degree do you? Unless of course you are willing to accept a career in the non-flying side of things..e.g. CAAS...ATC

90 percent of all cadets..including myself have absolutedly no flying experience and we still got in. You really don't need prior experience or be in a related field.

CargoBoy.

Hmm...You've got a really good point there. What on Earth would I do with a CPL/IR...Maybe go for an AFI rating and be a instructor? Gee i dunno. Or maybe seek employment with some charter company or sth. Maybe Valuair or some other LCC. I really dunno. I am still only 17. Got some time to think about it. i thought that having flight experience would give them more reason to choose you at the selection. I know its not a sure thing but its kinda like a back-up.

Well I dunno... thanks anyway Cargo for shedding some light on Massy grads failing the 2nd interview.

SnoopDogg : Not all post Lasik applicants will go thru. From what I heard, if your Lasik op was for very high refraction errors, then SIA might just chop u off.

Unsuccessful 1st Interview = 6 Months Wait?

Hello,

I tried and didn't make it through my 1st Interview at SIA. I immediately resubmitted my application to try again as I really want to fly for SIA.

I have gathered that there is a 6 months wait before one will be recalled for another chance for his 1st Interview. Would anyone with similar experience please share with me if:-

1) It is in SIA policy that if you don't make it through an interview, you will only be considered at least 6 months later?

2) Has anyone been given another chance BEFORE 6 months after their 1st attempt?

I just want to know if I am simply waiting for something that will NEVER happen (ie. SIA calls me up for my 2nd chance at the 1st interview) or I should simply wait 6 months before resubmitting my application...

Whatever it is, I won't give up. Thanks guys.

Regards.

Tango,

I have helped in the selection proecess and I can tell you this...whether u get selected for first Interview a second time depends on how many applicants are there. If there are many new applicants, they will give the new applicants priority. ONLY if there are not enough NEW applicants then will u be given a chance.

Yes,t he rough gauge for second chance applicants is at least 6 months to a year.

One tip. Fill out every blank in the form. I once was told to reject an applicant just because he did not have an email address!!

Hi Terryble,

With regards to the Lasik issue, so does it mean I have to wait 1 year after my op before i can apply? Cos I heard that SIA will still accept post lasik applicants with the 1st interview, however, they will instead have to wait 1 year before their 2nd interview. BTW, when u mean high refraction errors, what is considered high? 500deg?? Is astigmatism a no-no? Thank you.

Hi Guys,

I received an email notification from SIA HR, asking me to go down for my first interview on the 17th June 2005, 845am.

Any other folks here running down for interview as well? Am pretty nervous about it.

Thanks.

Thank you all for the great encouragement. My interview session last for 30 minutes, and it was really a great experience. For those who are going for the next interview. Below listed some of the questions they prompted.

1. Tell me the latest big event that is happening around the world. [I told them the paris airshow, which is showcasing the A380]

2. Any idea of the latest news conceaning SIA? [I told them its the trans pacific route that is rejected by Australia.

3. What do you think is the main reason for the denial. [I told them it comes down to airline revenue at the end of the day. The trans pacific route is definitely going cut a big hole on the kangaroo's pocket.]

4. Name me some of the engines fitted on our airplanes. [Well, the RR, PW, and the GE that are coming with the new 300sER]

5. And so, tell me where are the engines manufacturors HQ located at. [I don't know]

6. Since you are rather good in your science and maths papers. Let me pose you a question. how high do you think an airplane can fly? [I would say FL250 to FL400]

7. Do you think it can fly higher? [That depends on the aircraft type. As you go higher, air is thinner, and if there are not enough air inside the engine due to partial pressue, the engine might flame out. "not sure if i got this right"]

8. What speed do you think a B747 is able to travel. [0.8 - 0.9 mach]

9. What is a mach? [the speed of sound, sir]

10. Heard of the aircraft manufacturor MD? Tell me what happened to it. [I'm not very sure, however i did come across Boeing MD10, a good guess is MD being bought over by Boeing. Then again, I'm not very sure.]

11. How many engines are there on a MD10? [3 engines, one at the midship rear, 2 on each wing.]

I hope all these helps for the next interviewees, and good luck to everyone interviewing on 17th June 2005.

Whiteoak : your 1st interview is akin to my 2nd interview... My 1st interview was not so technical. Anyway, good luck to you.

WhiteOaks,

Your 1st interview seems much more technical than mine, and I didn't even make my 1st! Think I need to work much MUCH harder.

Anyway your answers do sound impressive in my personal view. Did you have prior flying experience?

Any idea why would they be

BEST OF LUCK to your 2nd! Hope to see you when I get in...

Regards.

...why would they be asking about MD10?

Thanks everyone for all your conceans, I guess I did my best, hopefully am able to get through to the second round.

I was with RSAF previously, maybe because of this, they poised more technical questions to me. and of course there are standard interview questions like. tell me about yourself? why didn't you make it through the airforce? why do you want to become a pilot? why SIA, not other airliners?

This forum do really provide ample assistance to wannabe(s) like myself. I'm glad i'm able to contribute.

Cheers!
