Guys,
When I did my first listening test, my only complaint was that the radio wasn't loud or clear enough, and I really had to concentrate to understand what was being said, even though I communicate in English on a regular basis. I am surprised that none of you were allowed to read the questions of the in-house test first; when I did it we had 10 seconds to have a quick scan before covering them up again. That being said, most of us in the hall couldn't hear the instructions being given by the HR up front; they wouldn't even bother themselves by using a microphone. So a lot of people actually kept looking at the questions even though they weren't supposed to, but I suppose HR has their "own way" of dealing with that.
Don't worry about the English component of the Initial Test. Seriously. Unless your English is absolutely rock-bottom, otherwise you should be good enough to pass the test. Trust me on that one. Worry about the maths part instead - I feel that this one bears a much heavier weight on whether you pass or failed the entire IT.
Good luck, hope you all get calls for the Aptitude Test.

Dear all,
I attended the 24th Feb initial test, I thought the numerical test was difficult too.
As a British-born Hong Kong Chinese, I had no problems in the Grammar test nor in both listening tests. It was a lot easier than I had anticipated.
I read the previous comments, I think the 10 seconds reading time has been removed now due to the fact the test would have been too easy with the questions known. They must noticed it from the previous groups results.
Anyway, following on what holdmetight was saying. I disagree because I think English is far more important than Maths (at this stage anyway). Mathematical problems are always based on being able to identify the problem, implementing a quick method to solve the problem and make intelligent guesses to neglect wrong answers. It is a non-verbal based language, everyone can learn it fairly quickly.
On the other hand, English is not something we can learn instantly. It takes time to widen our range of vocabularies, to structure sentences with good use of grammar, to build up the confidence to communicate fluently.
May be I'm saying that because I have not done as well as I would have liked in the numerical test. But hopefully, you can see where my argument is coming from. What do you think caffy,flyer09,hmt,yvonne?

Hey Yvonne and caffy,
Wondering if you two received a call from Monique. She just called me and informed me that I'll be proceeding to the Aptitude Test next Monday. Not quite sure how I'm suppose to prepare for this one.

Si3nna; i think they're both fairly important, i could explain the shortcuts to the first 6 questions (didn't even read the 7th myself). But under stress people tend to forget looking for short cuts and try brute force their maths on paper. I won't actually explain the shortcuts here as it will be an unfair advantage. But if you're really interested to know and completed the test on the 24th you could PM me for the shortcuts (along with a security question of what colour jacket was monique wearing )

the best approach to the AT would be to stay calm, take a short break between each task and don't let your results affect your performance in the next task (by doing the first two mentioned). Good Luck!

my listening test did not allow me to read the question either...=(
i couldn't hear the recording clearly even though i was sitting in the first row. i have no idea about what the first few sentences were in the first scenario, and have to shut my eyes for better concentration listening to the second and third voice clip. it was a luck that i sat in the first row because a friend going to the test along with me chose his sit before I did. Otherwise I'd probably sit at the far end and not knowing what the world was going on...
don't worry too much about the math test. I left out 7-8 Qs but still managed to get to the next stage...but Yvonne I really wanna know about the shortcuts that you mentioned, could you PM me?=P
So I assume no one has been called for first interview yet?

Congrats to those who got invited to the AT.
I will attend the AT on monday. Just wondering if its only computer based AT. But I was told that it will last for 2 hrs so will there be any other tests aswell like personality tests?
Can anyone who've done the AT kindly advise us what exactly to expect?
Thanks and Good Luck to ya all!

Hey everyone,
Congratulations to those who received calls to attend the Aptitude Test. Friends who did the AT tell me it isn't easy, but it won't be totally impossible to do. Just focus, do your best and let everything else take care of themselves. Have a good night's rest the night before, and keep cool on the day of. Enjoy and good luck!
As to the maths vs. English thing... I have no doubt that numerical reasoning and English are of paramount importance to professional flying. What I meant is that it is easier to reach the required standard in the listening tests than it is in the math test. As a result, I think people who ended up passing the Initial Test probably did it on the merit of their maths test, as opposed to the listening test. I mean, how many people finished the IT saying the English test was hard? Or the maths test was easy? Hope you get my drift.
Anyhow, best of luck again to people facing upcoming challenges in their quest for the cadetship. For those who have reached the end of the road, work hard and try again next year; learning from failure will make you a better pilot.
