Where are newly upgraded FOs going?

Hello all!

Trying to learn as much as I can (like everyone). Cathy is appealing for a number of reasons, a big one being that my wife is Australian and she'd love to move back there. (In the US now)

When an SO upgrades to FO what are the junior bases? At this point in our lives, Atlanta would be the best base for us, but how likely is that?

Thanks

Bases

JFK, LAX, ORD, ANC are the four options. There is a preferred port system in place. It works like this. If you are JFK based but the aircraft is sitting in ATL.....the company will deadhead you directly from your preferred port instead of deadheading you from JFK. This should usually work out pretty well and cover I would say half of your commuting costs. I'll let you know how well it works when I start.....scheduled to start training in HKG at the end of 2007......then a JFK base.
Hope this helps out.
Cheers,
EEEdog

If you are starting at the end of 2007 how do you know your base already? I'm supposed to be starting around Aug. but haven't been told squat about basing yet nor a definitive class date. Just curious what everyone is hearing out there.

Thanks

EEEdog is right about new joiners as FO's but I am not sure how it would work for an SO to FO upgrade. I know ATL, ORD, and DFW are bases but not open to new joiners. Maybe ATL would be open for a guy in that position since he would have the seniority for it. Of course you would have to come from the pax fleet to the freighter fleet to do that.

If DFW and ATL are not open to new joiners, how long do you think it might take to get there if hired in the next few months as a DEFO in the States? How do you move from one US base to another, I assume it's not a typical system bid like we're used to?

Be sure that you truly understand the preferred port system before you elect one. They basically work great if you actually live in your preferred port. An example of a poor decision: Pilot lives in Seattle and elects Vancouver BC as pilot's preferred port. Great I can drive to work! Trip starts out of Vancouver on the freighter up to Anchorage ends 11 days later in Los Angeles which is your actual base. Arrive into LAX at midnight, sleep on the couch, lot's of available seats on the first flight to Seattle, but oh SH!+ my car is in YVR! People who elect preferred ports are basically saying "Sure I'll cover 2 airports for ya" and I'll do it for free!!!The company has no obligation to start and end your trip at the same airport if you have a preferred port. Also, if you are used to seniority and bidding, forget all about it if you join CX. Also, in the example above, if the pilot didn't have YVR as a preferred port and the company wanted him to start his trip there, they would have to get him there from LAX and provide a hotel and allowances. Instead he get's nothing.

Preferred Ports

True enough.....the pairings could begin and end at a different port, but generally I think this could work out really well for a lot of guys......covers a lot of their commuting flights....just my 2 cents.

So, as a "poolie" I am considering living in SFO and commuting to LAX on the freighter with hopes of eventually getting into the SFO pax base. I am assuming that SFO would work as a preferred port? Seems easy enough to me. Also, can anyone attest to the availability of the SFO pax base and the associated quality of life?

Thanks,

SikeMo

oldcarpilot,
you don't get any base except in HKG for JFO; however, you may bid on a base when you become a fully qualify F/O (apprximately 6mos in general after your initial upgrade). Moreover, seniority is another problem beside the equipment. If according to your message, you stated that your wife would like to move back to Aust, which is the bus's territory at the moment, plus the DEFO, i personally think the chance will be slim.

the abovementioned statment is for pax fleet

Seniority and bases for FO Pax fleet

As I am reading, the most wanted bases are in the US and OZ. So I assume the waiting list are long. (How long ??)
Now, how about Europe base ?
I would be looking for Paris, but wonder how long I have to wait, between the moment I qualify to apply for a foreign base, and the moment I do get based there ?
Amsterdam could be the B plan.
How long are the waiting list for these two bases ? In the objective of getting a Paris base, shall I rather choose to join the 747 or 340 fleet as SO, as both aircrafts type are flown there ?
Thanks for your answers !
Cheers !

Hi,

If you want a base right away the best option is A340 AMS.I think they are still recruiting. The other option is through the SO path. You initially starts on 74 or 340.When you upgrade is 777 or 330.So it will take 5 yrs if you go through this option to take a base. The other option is to transfer to freighters 1 year after being SO.
This is valid now, but with the ER's coming and also a fleet renewal in the pipeline, things will look different in 5 yrs.

Good luck.
