I would have thought that it would be the company...

I would have thought that it would be the company and country you are flying for. Their operations manuals would state what FTL has been authorised for their operation.

kkay - I'd suggest looking for current job vacancies first before deciding what to do. See what they require of you. I would imagine that most will say; "5 years experience in operational airline"....
