My only other suggestion is a virus infection, there are several which target Task Manager and kill it as soon as it is run (eg Mytob, Petch, Erkez, etc).

AFAIK gmail from google offers free POP3 access, although I haven't tried it personally.

Oddly you have to pay for POP3 on yahoo.com addresses, but on yahoo.co.uk addresses it's free and works...
