Is there a heated air source behind the panel? Possibly has a hole blowing warm air across radios?
This assumes that normal cooling for radios is working well.

This is speculation, not rumor...overcharging the battery could be the problem, meaning the charger is not wellregulated.

Not sure what you mean by "old". Marshall's in Cambridge, UK did the aux tanks for the RAF L1011 tanker. You might check with them for a lead to abandoned fuel tanks.
