Gibraltar

And the smuggling of tobacco from Morocco to Gib and in to Spain is a big hole in the Spanish treasury, hence the increased border checks which seemed to spark the heightened tensions.

Many...

Gibraltar

I wouldn't believe all you read in the papers or online media. About the most reliable is the BBC but they are very good at purporting to have an impartial take on matters.

As for armed escorts,...

Gibraltar

Yes! A scientific research vessel is in our territorial waters! Let's destroy it and kill all on board.

A very "George Dubya" approach to international diplomacy guys...

Anyway, I hardly think...

Slinfold still open?

Does anyone know what's going on at Slinfold? Is it still open for visitors?

I've tried ringing the number given on UKGA countless times but nobody picks up.

Is there a mobile number or email...

New EASA licence holder

I agree with Kestrel, it is silly that you can't see the segments of the licence that the pockets are clearly designed to fit. Anyway, i spoke to the CAA a while back and you are allowed to cut the...

How to know if you can make required climb gradient?

Formula is correct but I don't think you need to be so accurate. Just round your numbers on the safe side and average out your GS figures and if your result is too close to the minimum ROC required...

Free turbine

No, not all TPs are free turbines. Look them up on Wikipedia. Otherwise this would be a very long reply.

Flying a Cub - tips?

Buy "The Compleat Taildragger Pilot" (yes, that is how he has spelt complete...) by Harvey Plouarde and read the relevant sections.

Tail wheel training these days is rarely comprehensive enough...

Bobble tail thing on test flights

That would be a trailing cone sensor for calibrating the aircrafts' instruments by getting a reading of static pressure, well clear of aircraft structures.

Bobble tail sounds cute too though...

Late clearance as you steam towards controlled airspace...

I probably would have just maintained my Alt and done a couple of 2 minute orbits. That way your position stays roughly the same and you don't mess up your nav (easy to revise) and fuel planning by...

Radio Call at the Beacon

So there we are then. In summary;

The call is "entering the hold" (no longer "taking up...") and one should make it when performing a sector 1,2 or 3 hold entry, regardless of whether you are...

Radio Call at the Beacon

Ok TeeS. I was taught (perhaps by traditionalists...) that the "taking up the hold" call describes the entrance (sector 1,2 or 3) you are making to establish on the beacon.

The controller then...

Radio Call at the Beacon

ATC 'on conversion'........

I believe you're referring to the point in descent at which jet aircraft revert to using indicated airspeed as opposed to Mach number. So ATC might say to a descending aircraft using a Mach speed;...

Just heard something American on London control going in to Mildenhall around 2325 call sign "Celt". Don't know if that helps narrow it down.

mk2 aircrew kneeboard...again...

Brilliant! Thank you, and the last two questions were

1: which crews would this be issued to
2: typical equipment carried in the kneeboard.

Thanks guys.

Yes really. They aren't like the flight suit kneeboards. These have holes punched in them and are on the rings inside. Do you use them in the same way as those on the flight suit or are they used in...
