If you can learn in the R22 from the beginning, do so - it's harder to fly than the Bell 47, although without the throttle control practice.

The J1 only allows you to work in an area directly...

If you have another trade (that is on the list) you may be able to combine a visa application that covers both trades e.g. C++ Programmer - who must be able to fly helicopters, 1000 hours etc...

Do your private with a long time instructor in Australia. When you go to the States you'll probably be put with a low timer CFI. That's the way the system works but...

Dont complete your CPL in Oz. Your J1 visa wont allow it. It would be cheaper for you to do more in the US too.

Scheduling in the schools is tough but if you get the right instructor who can work...

You might try the Sporty's DVD's and Kings DVD Helicopter supplements. Wont be much help with JAA specific stuff but they do cover the aerodynamics and other relevant material...

Your weight is not a problem in the Schweizer. You just have a smaller market to choose from. As you have your R44 hours, that shouldn't be too much of a problem either.

Take a look at the CFI positions available - 300 hrs minimum. Still seems like the real low timers need more hours - not less!

I don't think Frank's turbine will be unveiled but how about the stripped down R44 for the training market? (Not sure what there is left to take out though...)
