But we all know that no one in the industry would want to do it - this has to be imposed by Governments.

It seems that :-

The aircraft had returned to the gate because of technical trouble - (insufficient power?).
A repair had been carried out (hastily?).
The repair had been signed...

Presumably the AP just disconnected itself at some point - maybe at an altitude of around 40 feet - when it felt it...

OK - I admit I wasn't hurt in the crash

And - alright I wasn't actually on the plane,

And, fair enough, I was 200 miles from Heathrow that particular day - but I sure as hell was traumatised...

It's so long ago now -and so many posts back - it may be worth reminding ourselves that one of the flight crew - identified as "the captain" - told the driver of a tug immediately after the crash...
