Classy, restrained, distinctive liveries back then. BOAC, Pan Am, TWA, JAL and others. BA should reinstate the Speedbird widget.

Now liveries are too gaudy, like a three year old with crayons. Some look like toothpaste tubes, (American)?

What's the difference between a modern airliner and a toothpaste tube? You squeeze the contents out of a toothpaste tube.

I thought I was the only person who thought present day civil aircrafts look like tube of toothpaste!

No, me too. Actually, the "Red Square" (non-soviet) scheme on the A320 looks great.

Referring to the 742 that was repainted.

I'd certainly love to see photos of that. It's strange that a hard-nosed organisation like BA would spend money on something that would have a limited shelf life and no commercial benefit.

I'd say that then, as now, it all gets written off on the PR budget.

When I was working in IT in a fancy London West End department store, the budget for the main window dressing seemed limitless. They were changed every six weeks thoughout the year and no one ever questioned. For us, in the backroom, trying to get funding for new IT (1980s) it was always an uphill stuggle. They said the windows brough the customers in and our point that we made the store function and service the customers was ignored. When I did a contract for a major UK High Steet chain in the 1990s? Same story.

Given that it was a pretty minimal repaint (just the tail and logo, in fact I've seen reports that it was only applied on one side), it was probably paid for out of petty cash. :O

It would be nice to see a pair of baby buses painted into the Orange and Yellow Klingon liveries as well

Well, at least some of the Flight Attendants are wearing shear hose.

G-AWNA

The repainted 747 above is a -100, you can tell by the Pratts hanging on the wing.

suninmyeyes 25th Jan 2019 20:51

I still remember the max takeoff weight for those -100s was 332.9 tonnes. Nowadays the 777-300s can take off heavier than that.

Are you sure, I didn't think they built -100s with the ten upper deck windows per side.

Bergerie1 26th Jan 2019 02:59

G-AWNA is without doubt a 747-136. I have flown it many times, but not in those colours.

Early B741s/B742s were built with 3 windows, later ones with 10.

In addition, some airlines (including BA in the late 1970s) modified their early aircraft, which involved replacing the skin panels as can be seen on this NW B741:

As the British Airways we know today was formed by the merger of BOAC and BEA in 1974 it is reasonable to have a short haul aircraft painted in BEA colours as well as a long haul aircraft in BOAC colours.

Yes, as I mentioned in a couple of previous posts, that's the logical conclusion. The only question is which of the BEA liveries BA will choose.

Given that we know 3 747s and one A319 will go retro, I suspect that as well as the BOAC 747, we'll see the Landor and Negus schemes on the other two Boeings and (hopefully!) the BEA Red Square on the Airbus.

OxfordGold 26th Jan 2019 11:00

BEA had widebodies as well (L1011)

One was painted in BEA colours as a demonstrator and 6 were ordered for Q4 1974. None were delivered as BEA ceased operations some time before the due date.

"Tristars were three holes too..." OMG.........

This is making the rounds on another forum. Shame it's going on the B744. The landor livery would look so classy on the 380.

Bergerie1 27th Jan 2019 09:29

Porterboy,
That looks really good. By far the best BA colour scheme after the merger.

red9 27th Jan 2019 10:04

And a nice tribute to Queen, Freddy would be proud

It will look equally classy on a B744. In fact it did for ten years or so ... :O

But I agree that a retro livery has the most impact when applied to a type that has never worn it.

Maybe BA will have more imagination than we give them credit for - imagine a 747 in either of the two schemes (white tail/blue tail) that the Stratocruisers, Britannias, etc, wore.
