British Airways retro painting 747-400 in BOAC colors
British Airways is to paint one of their fleet in BOAC retro colors https://www.businesstraveller.com/bu...o-boac-livery/ |
I believe that it's first planned flight is on the 19th, and by co-incidence I plan to be at LHR on that date. Would love to get some photo's of the takeoff.
Does anyone know which route this will be used on, and therefore take off time please? |
BA Press release here: BRITISH AIRWAYS TO PAINT AIRCRAFT WITH MUCH-LOVED DESIGN FROM AIRLINE'S HISTORY (their caps, not mine!)
Apparently colour photography hadn't been invented in the days of BOAC 747s. :O |
Slight lump to the throat as long since departed father-in-law was an SCSO in a 747 looking just like that. Have a photo at home with him in front of one with flight deck crew at JFK. Everyone has enough scrambled egg on their caps to keep a short-order cook in business for a week.
|
Can they do one in Imperial Airways livery too? Would look good in all-over silver with registration in large letters on top of, and underneath, the wings.

Strictly speaking, to be a truly representative retro 747-100 it should start by sitting on the ground at LHR for six months :O
|
Are the company paying for this one or is it being painted for free by the staff again? |
...with concrete blocks instead of engines !

Would love to see them do one in BCAL livery. Also Dan Air would be nice to see for one last time.

White Aircraft witj just the tail................................. seems to be de rigeur in IAG owned airlines now.
|
Circa 1960's in-flight service with flight attendants dressed in period uniforms would be rather pleasant too!

LookingForAJob,
G-ASGC, the Super VC10 at Duxford is in the BOAC Cunard version of that livery. There are several errors in the paint scheme compared to the original though. Lettering, shape of the 'Speedbird' emblem on the fin, thickness and sweep of the cheatline, etc. |
Classy, restrained, distinctive liveries back then. BOAC, Pan Am, TWA, JAL and others. BA should reinstate the Speedbird widget.
Now liveries are too gaudy, like a three year old with crayons. Some look like toothpaste tubes, (American)? What's the difference between a modern airliner and a toothpaste tube? You squeeze the contents out of a toothpaste tube. |
Nice move , but from BA web site :
As part of its 100-year birthday, British Airways has today announced it will be painting a Boeing 747...etc...

It is a bit far stretched to claim BA is 100 years old , if you count all the mergers before you., a lot of others could claim the same including AF. I thought the only real airline that can really claim to be 100 years in 2019 is KLM ( and they will celebrate this ) all the other that flew at the time or before have disappeared since. But Ok, I understand it is all about marketing.:)
Personally, I can't wait: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....9724aba82e.jpg http://www.cardatabase.net/modifieda...g/00014550.jpg |

It's just amazing how much the retro liverys enhance aircraft performance. ;)
American has done a few recently: https://www.air-and-space.com/20150411%20PHX/20150411%20PHX_BL33023%20737-823%20N951AA%20American%20Astrojet%20right%20front%20take-off%20l.jpg |
Whilst welcome, I would prefer to see BA bring back the VC10 for the BOAC paint job. :)

Thanks Cows; made my morning already. Now we need to get one back into flying condition (dream on)
|
Probably the best looking aircraft of all time. Used to fly on them as a kid LGW - EBB - NBO with BUA.

From my photo archives. I inherited a large number of BEA/BOAC press photos at the time of the merger. Ironically I had the opportunity to give BA something in return. The BA press Office in Frankfurt was unable to meet the enquiries from journalists, authors, etc., so I provided all the photo material from my archives, which I gladly did. For years, and free of charge, of course. BEA 71 |
Aren't the current BA 747s already retro enough as they are? ;)

I think they still are, at least in British Airways. |

The BOAC Speedbird logo is still flying . . .

Seeing some of those aircraft in the real world might give some young anoraks a head scratching!

Is this a "what if" or confirmed as one of the schemes being used?
While there are of course several BEA schemes to choose from, the two in use at the time BOAC got its first 747s were the Red Square livery and the "Speedjack" scheme. I hope it turns out to be the former. |
