TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian state television reports 48 people have been killed in the passenger plane crash near the capital, Tehran.
Iranian state television said 40 passengers and eight crew members were killed Sunday in the crash. The plane, operated by Sepahan Air, was heading to Tabas, a town in eastern Iran. State TV said it took off at 9:20 a.m. local time (4:50 GMT) and crashed shortly afterward.
The aircraft, an Iran-140 jet typically used for short domestic flights, crashed near Mehrabad airport, west of Tehran.

Lots of densely built-up areas close to Mehrabad. It's at the lower, poorer part of Tehran.
(I thought it was supposed to be replaced by the new airport way out of town near the Ayatollah's Shrine?)
EDIT - Imam Khomenei International handles international flights. Mehrabad still does domestic and some Haji charters. (According to Wikipedia & the AP link above)

According to Wikipedia, the accident in question indicated that a wing came off
"[Managing-Director of Iran’s Airport Company Mohammad Ilkhani] confirmed that the pilot was about to take off at the end of the runway when he lost his starboard engine and crashed the plane seconds after take-off."
Presumably he doesn't actually mean an engine failure prior to commencing the takeoff roll ...

The BBC has already solved the accident so no need to continue here. In their view it is down to the poor condition of the pre-1979 aircraft still in use in Iran, all due to the US. Details of the model, age, and source of the aircraft in question don't enter into it, nor does the aircraft's history of prior accidents due to the fuel system.

I noted in a video showing the tail being lifted away that the port stabiliser has a lot of sooting/greasing that the right stabiliser doesn't.
Perhaps some sort of engine problem?

Supposedly the tail hit an electricity pylon after take off.
Heard it on a TV report of uncertain source.
Does this explain why the tail structure is from the photos available apparently distinct from the majority of the wreckage?

it is due to us sanctions preventing Iran from buying planes.
they have no choice apart from either resorting to ukranine and russian planes which have crashed so many times in the past few years or simply stop all iranian flights which simply is not an option.
They even struggle to get parts and sometimes get uncertified parts !!

The aeroplane isn't airworthy, and the people we call"the great Satan" won't sell us any spares. Odd, that. Oh well, let's just fly it anyway.

The sanctions have not stopped them buying used "western" jets through brokers in countries that do not fall under US or European jurisdiction and are free to trade with Iran.
And yes, there are plenty of US manufactured components on Airbus models, so the sanctions would include them.
Iranian airlines operating old or sub par Russian or Ukranian metal are doing so because it's cheap. Much like a lot of African nations have airline fleets made up of older Boeing jets (737-200, DC-9, etc)
