G-NEWS was de-registered 6 days ago and sent to the Philippines.

TRC 26th Feb 2012 17:35

It was a Brantly 305, G-ATSJ. Registration history from G-INFO - suddenly had an epiphany.

It was in the hangar when I started there in late 74, and festered there for years. Eventually was sold to goodness-knows-who and it disappeared by road.

A brief report of its demise is in Veeany's site here.

It's funny, but I remember it being in that hangar for longer than it evidently was.

G-NEWS

Whether this was the black 206 to which PC refers I do not know
NEWS was a very dark green, easily confused with black at a distance.

G-LOCK

thanks for posting pic of G-LOCK, missing from my collection over the years !
As you refer to it being re-registered G-TPTR, I take it you mean c/n 8587 ?
This was infact the second allocation of G-LOCK, the original c/n 8592 was ntu & was re-registered in France.

heli1 28th Feb 2012 10:35

I think you'll find the Brantly moved not far away and is today a garden ornament near Bracknell....The remains of JetRanger TPTR are at the helicopter museum.

G-ATSJ

Ah well, how swiftly one forgets! T'was only a year ago since (on the Nostalgia Thread) we were discussing G-ATSJ (pages 19 and 34).

She was of course bought from BEAS by the inimitable Tommy Sopwith (in 1966) and sold to Alan Mann in 1968. Freddie Wilcox also seems to have had a hand in brokering the sale between SJ's next owner (Sunderland Print) and her final owner, Robert Ryan.

G-ATSJ met with her demise in June 1977 when, according to the report:

ON APPROACH, AT ABOUT 3FT AGL, THE HELICOPTER BEGAN TO DRIFT TO THE RIGHT. THE PILOT 'OVERPITCHED', THE RIGHT WHEEL TOUCHED THE GROUND & THE HELICOPTER OVERTURNED. (AIB BULLETIN 8/77). CAA CLOSURE: POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTARY FACTORS MENTIONED BY PILOT WERE HIGH AMBIENT TEMP, HIGH ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, HIGH HUMIDITY & HIGH A/D ELEVATION (950FT AMSL).
Reading the 'contributary factors' cited by the driver, one could be excused for thinking he was flying in Malaya!

Last Alan Mann Helicopters sign airside at Fairoaks disappeared a couple of days ago and has just been replaced by a Heli Air sign.

Fairoaks signs

All of the former MAGE hangars got new Gama Engineering signs this week as well!
I wonder where Helair are going to keep their aircraft as there are no spare hangars?

chevvron 11th Mar 2012 06:32

Only the R44 (possibly a Jetranger too) at the moment and they're kept outside on the Eastern Helipads. The Hughes 269 at Chobham Helicopters is also parked outside but at the Western Helipads.
Starspeed have now taken over the hangar next to Chobham Helis.

Had a larf on Sat sat in a Heli-Air R66, flying from the Alan Mann dispersal into the Fairoaks circuit for the first time since 1987. Don't the cars look small?

Impressed with R66 performance but still the T-bar cyclic and tiny switches. Do people get used to these?

Anyway, far be it from me to close a thread but I, at least, have found closure on the Alan Mann story. The King is dead etc.

heli1 13th Mar 2012 15:01

Gosh...I hope someone is saving one of the Alan Mann signs for the Helicopter Museum ?!

exdesigner 15th Mar 2012 19:03

any news?

do my eyes deceive me or have the Heliair signs been taken down?

wigglyamp 15th Mar 2012 20:48

Do seem to have disappeared!

G-DOUG was one of the first Agusta-built JetRanger III's delivered to the UK. The second, serial no. 8560 (G-OIML) was ordered by Ferranti.

Registered to Faioaks Aviation in August 1978 G-DOUG flew for the aircraft collector Doug Arnold prior to her acquisition by the Mackan Group in 1980 when she became G-MKAN.

In 1981 she was bought by T. Kilroe & Sons of Radcliffe, Manchester when she flew as G-TKHM. In 1984 she was bought by Red Rose Helicopters who sold her to Austria 1986 where she became OE-XBA.

Sad to note that Alan Mann passed away yesterday (Tuesday)

Ford racing legend Alan Mann dies | Classic and Sports Car

Savoia 21st Mar 2012 18:12

Another legend passes into history. My condolences to Henry and the family.

It had been my intention to visit Alan to interview him for the Ferranti/Alan Mann site we are building but .. my delay in returning to Blighty has now meant this cannot (obviously) happen.

Alan spawned the development of what became for two good decades one of Britain's leading onshore helicopter outfits. His negotiation of the Agusta distributorship propelled Alan Mann Helicopters to the fore of the UK's private and early commercial market where Mann's were, as stated, a force to be reckoned with.

Unlike Ferranti, Hanson and others, Mann's were never hankered after recognition as an 'elite' organisation they instead, for the most part, just got on with the job and which endeared them to many.

In their day they were a truly wonderful company - one which contributed significantly to the advancement rotary-wing aviation in the UK.

RIP Alan

Such a sad loss for our industry ... how well I remember the great Alan Mann greeting me in the early 1970s on the tarmac of Fairoaks Airport, with a warm, "Welcome to the industry Dennis" ... this in spite of the fact that my employer Roy Spooner was starting a competitive business at the airfield. A true gentleman of aviation and one who will be missed. We all respected you Alan. May you 'Rest in Peace.'

Dennis Kenyon.

Having worked at Fairoaks for many years I was privileged to have been on good talking terms with Alan for which I feel very honoured. A true Brit and an inspiration to many. His life of motor racing, aviation, fish farm, etc must have provided a fascinating and colourful lifestyle. Sadly he joins several others that were part of the truly fantastic Group of Companies of its day. Lets hope a good amount of AM memorabilia is preserved. RIP indeed Alan.

Mr. Alan Mann Funeral

Having spoken to a colleague who has spoken to Henry Mann today, the family will be holding a private funeral tomorrow (28/03/12).

Henry has also said that the family are planning a memorial service in Romsey on Thursday 3rd May where all wishing to pay their respects will be most welcome. Time to brush off those old uniforms chaps!

Further details will be posted as they become available.

Regards,

Paul.

It was Alan who gave me my first job in the aviation business back in 1982 working as Ground Crew at Fairoaks; later at FJC, Heathrow for twelve very happy year. Alan was a great man, highly respected in the business and I am proud to have known and worked for him. No doubt he is up there now smoking a Malboro and talking with John Ackers and a few others! RIP Alan.

Ah - Barratts

Yes I was there then. Seem to remember the ex-Army chap who flew the new Barratt's Agusta 109 didn't realise that his military 'Master Green' counted for nought and had to do a check-ride with the man from CAAFU. The candidate turned up at Fairoaks wih his shiny new toy only to be confronted by a puzzled examiner who said, "where are the screens". "What screens?" came the reply.

Never in the field of human endeavour has any pilot been so unprepared for what followed. The kind examiner did not give up but came into our office and borrowed a copy of yesterday's Daily Telegraph and some masking tape and duffed-up some screens out of the newspaper.

I am not sure at what stage the examiner realised that Johnny Pilot couldn't tell a hold from an iLS but let's just say that he, Johnny, expected a military style test and - FAILED.

Per Ardua etc

AMH Chief Eng.

Hi Savoia
I was the Chief Eng at AMH from 1976 to 1986. Many happy times. Only found out on 18th about the loss of Alan Mann. I only joined the PPrune then.
I have a few photos of times gone by especially the A109's from the Argies.

Hi Geoff

Glad to hear you are still flying. What about the woodworking. Still making

items? Remember our trip to the French engine maufacturer.

So .. its great to have you with us.

Used to lob into Fairoaks from time-to-time during the years you were at AMH and though you probably wouldn't remember me you may remember my godfather, Lt. Col. Bob Smith, ex-Managing Director of Ferranti Helicopters.

One of the last aircraft Ferranti ordered through Mann's was on behalf of their client, International Messengers of Sunbury, an AB206 III, G-OIML which was delivered at the end of 1978. You may recall her passing through the 'Mannstead' as she wore Ferranti's Dijon yellow colours and was the first Agusta-built 206 III in the UK (to the best of my knowledge).

Please do post as many photos as you possibly can of your time at Fairoaks and, just as importantly, divulge all the terrible (but necessary) ;) stories about that great 'cacophony' of pilots and mechanics who were once known as Alan Mann Helicopters!

Welcome aboard RM. I guess you are retired by now. I wish I could afford to. Working in Italy these days. No time for woodworking but those were the days eh!

baldeagle73 19th Oct 2012 19:44

Hi Savonia

I certainly remember Bob Smith. I looked after his helicopter at British Airways Gatwick with his helper/ cleaner/ driver Pete Smith.

The A109's I mentioned where picked up by G Savage, Major( cant remember the last name, a MOD civil servant and myself.

We flew the aircraft across the Alps, via Monaco and the Lyon valley.

On arrival in the UK an assement of their serviceability was made and we where able to account for all the flying done in the Falklands. We estimated the cost to return them to be about £20,000 or so. However the MOD did not agree and spent close to half million. We did not argue!!
I have some photos crossing the Alps. Will try to send them

baldeagle73 19th Oct 2012 19:53

Hi Geoff
Yep! retired about 6 years ago. Those where the the days. I remember you woodworking at F/oaks, dropping your woodplane to dash over to do a charter with the lovely Jennie shouting hurry up.

I may be in Cornwall this comming summer so maybe we can meet up to share a beer.
