Is an aircraft’s owner responsible for a pilot’s qualifications?
- United Kingdom.
- Part-NCO “private” helicopter, G-reg.
- hired to a (UK CAA) PPL holder for their own recreational flying.
Is the aircraft owner responsible for the pilot’s qualification. For example, the pilot’s differences training validity. If yes, by which regulation?

Let’s please assume the pilot is hiring the helicopter from the owner and genuinely using it for their own recreational uses, often referred to as self-fly hire.
Is the owner responsible by regulation (ignoring for the purposes of this research any best-practice considerations) to ensure the pilot is fully qualified to fly the aircraft? And if so, which regulation?

- They hold the appropriate licence and ratings
- They meet recent experience requirements
- The flight is conducted within privileges and limitations
- The aircraft is airworthy and legally usable
