I don't know enough about the 109 since I only know the 135 and 365 but what is the cabin space like with a stretcher? The speed should be excellent me thinks. After all thats what's it all about, innit?

Sloane get another 109 in service by the 'back door' method!....
"East Midlands Ambulance Service has selected a new supplier to operate an improved air ambulance service dedicated to Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.
And East Midlands Airport has been selected as the operating base for the helicopter.
The new arrangements will come into being on 1 April 2008.
“We are delighted to be able to make this announcement,” said Dave Whiting, Director of Operations at EMAS. “We have listened to people’s concerns and feel this is a ‘win-win’ outcome –
firstly, the base is maintained at East Midlands Airport and secondly we have secured the improved service we promised. We are getting a speedier air ambulance, able to take an additional patient, with longer flying hours operated, improved bad weather capability and a doctor as a
member of the crew.
“We are pleased that Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance have joined us to provide this service. They have a solid track record of operating air ambulances and they are highly skilled, innovative and ambitious. They really know the business and they are keen to connect with the people of Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Sounds like politics! Another break away from County who feel they didn't get enough of the West Mids cash pot
Wonder if Sloanes are putting this one out at cost as well

Does you comment mean it's all about politics again and not the right tool for the right job?
No just curious whether a service (that will be paid for from donated public money) can be "selected" without a public selection process!
eg; none of the other air ambulance charities involved with East Midlands Ambulance Service were asked by EMAS to provide any details of how they could support the Leicester, Derbyshire and Rutland area!

Only of interest to a few hems ppruners,I suppose, but got to the bottom of the strange EMAS "selection" proceedure for the new Derby/Leics/Rutland air ambo.
EMAS has already got about 10 of its own NHS paramedics on the several air ambulances serving its area. They really didn't want to lend any more.
Only Warwick/Northants charity would set up an operation with 1 EMAS paramedic and 1 doctor per day. The other local air ambulance charities would require 2 EMAS paramedics per day. So EMAS 'save' 4 paramedics. That's why they didn't even bother asking the other charities!
The reason they will get a 109 at East Mids is that's the sort Warwick/Northants are presently operating.
The only 109 air ambulance operation out of 24 air ambulances in England and Wales. Shows how popular they are as air ambulances!
(Curious how the Warwick/ Northants charity CEO and the MD of the local Augusta dealership appear to be associated with the same Chamber of Commerce! )

Why do parts of the air ambulance world go for this ' Ours is bigger than yours' approach to PR? Surely the public would support an air amb without a tirade of negative comments about it's neighbours. I'm sure that each operation has it's strengths and weaknesses.
Seems a shame. HEMS looks like a great job but how do you put up with the constant politics and back-biting? Come on guys, play nice!

I agree Bolk!
On 25th October, at the press launch of the Augusta 109 as the new Leics/Derby/Rutland air ambulance, the Sloane pilot Paul Smith stated that the 109 was a "more technically advanced helicopter" than the 135 or 902 and that when it arrived on scene of an accident was able to shut down in only 2 minutes, compared with the 4-5 minutes of the 135 or 902 !!

4-5 minutes to turn off an explorer!!! i'd go for more like 30 seconds. I wonder if the people of Derbyshire realise that an air ambulance now operates out of Sheffield and between them, Lincs/Notts and Cosford/ Stafford cover the area quite well without the need to replace the one at East Mids.
As for the pro's and cons of an A109, i wouldn't really want to be operating a tricycle wheeled machine in the Peaks.....

I am disappointed in Sloane for brandishing such twoddle. I understand one might need to talk ones product up but not like this. This does not help our industry at all. It's bad enough the media get it wrong.

Its not just Sloane; East Midlands Ambulance Service are also putting out similar misinformation about the 109's abilities to justify their "selection process" (which was based round their decision not to supply any more paramedics to man the air ambulances covering the EMAS area.)

I'm confused by the 'improved bad weather capability' The EC135 that previously covered the East Mids patch would have been a single-pilot IFR machine, the airport facilities remain the same and HEMS weather minima is HEMS weather minima whether you are flying a 109, 135, 902 or a Reliant Robin!

The air ambulance operation (WNAA) that will raise cash for the new Leics/DerbyRutland Augusta 109 is fuelled by Carlsberg, apparently!-----
“As well as being a proven life-saver, WNAA is a highly visible medium and is a fantastic brand marketing opportunity for medium and large-sized organisations. It has by far the most superior service of any air ambulance organisation in the UK, and our continued aim is for it to become known among politicians and regional influencers as an example of clinical excellence.”
