He must be extremely talented and experienced because I was told by ADA that they can't make job offers until after the UAE security investigation is complete, something about it being a UAE government prerequisite.
Maybe either ADA decided it was worth risking it with the government or your friend misinterpreted what they told him?

I still think it was Option 2 because we all got that email on Memorial Day :
We look forward to receiving your documents and pending successful security clearance, joining the team at Abu Dhabi Aviation.
I also remember that we were told NOT to resign until we get the official offer. That's why the paperwork clearly asks How many weeks notice do you have to give your employer?
Hopefully we'll all get the clearance and meet over there as co-workers but until then as much as I want to go work over there I won't count my chickens until they're hatched. This way I'm still excited but with an open mind so I'm not setting myself up for disappointment.

I agree there's no such thing a the prefect job. You take a job and you learn from it. Sometimes it's a pleasure and sometimes it's hell while you're acquiring that experience but you still get some kind of experience out of every job and I'm talking about not only flight experience. You gain life experience too if you're so lucky. I know that every company I've worked for no matter how awful or how great, I've gotten something positive out of it maybe because I'm a positive person. I might not have seen it at the time but looking back I have seen it.

Pilot 135. You have just had your first lesson in the realities of ADA and the Middle East in general. What you are told one day does not necessarily apply the next. Also it is a case of who you know - not what you know.
Nothing is 'fair' or consistent. If there is a problem and you are the only expat involved then it will be your fault.
You have certainly done the right thing by asking for advice on this forum before signing up but understand that nothing will be the same as it is back home. In ADA and the Middle East you are playing by their rules - not your own sense of justice or right and wrong.
Accept these truths and live with it or save yourself a lot of heartache and look elsewhere.
From one who knows.

Pilot 135.
Please, continue your dissertation throughout the whole process please. There will be lots out there wanting to know the current situation with ADA, both good and bad.
Well done!

My buddy did not get a letter from ADA, he got a phone call about 5 am and was offered a position.
You need to kind of chill out or you will not survive ADA. Between the Indian Mafia, the Aussie maintenance mob and the Royal Navy drivers they will enjoy winding you up....

Now that the Mods deleted some posts and changed some words in the original post, when I read your post the first thing that comes to mind when I see your name is transmission oil. Wow, interesting how one word can change an entire post. It sounds positive now, Thanks!

I guess my post kind of dates me, I have not been there in many years. Hard to believe that the Aussie maintenance mob has been run off tho...And there really never were that many Royal Navy twits anyway. But the few that were there when I was last there did make for some interesting days in Um Shaif when the vis was down....LOL

Only applies to US Citizens with foreign income
I'll be meeting with a tax specialist this week, with two different specialists to be exact, but I've been reading all day about the tax exemptions for US citizens working outside of the USA in order to be informed and be able to ask better questions.
I just read that as an employee working for a foreign company I wouldn't have to pay Social Security or Medicare on foreign earned income (unlike a self employed pilot who would have to pay the IRS Self-Employment Tax for SS and Medicare) but that brings up a doubt.
Does a pilot working in UAE get a W-2 at the end of the year given to him and sent to the IRS or is it up to the pilot to keep track of what he's been paid and inform the IRS?

That'll be fine, I'm pretty organized. Was just thinking if a year end W-2 style document was given to pilots if it was in Arabic or English but if it doesn't even exist it's easier. Thanks

I was told that the salary is a direct deposit into a local bank. After checking out the banks operating in the UAE and what they charge for checks, teller services, etc, which is the preferred bank for expats that won't charge you an arm and a leg to have a basic account? I saw Barclays and Citibank are international but extreme also in their charges, is this normal over there?
