Blacklist by CHC Australia

Is there any truth to the rumour that CHC Australia has a black list of pilots...specifically, serving and Ex Victoria Police Air Wing? Not one received an interview for the current contracts in Victoria. Would have thought they were ideal for the contracts...not so according to internal sources!

Don't know about a blacklist, but they do have a unique recruiting system. When I first applied many years ago I was told that I needed 1500 hours, a Bell206 endorsement and NVFR rating.
Some years later having left the Army with those qualifications, I applied again and was told that they were not recruiting.
A few years later with 5000 hours, a CIR and lots of twin command time I applied again and was told that I needed 500 hours offshore time to be employed as a captain. I asked for an interview for a co-pilot position and finally got one.
Eight weeks after the interview they told me that my application was unsuccessful. They declined to comment on the reasons.
It has taken me a while, but I think I've finally got the message and won't be applying for the Victoria jobs.
If you do get an interview be aware that they put a great deal of emphasis on the IQ and psych tests. Come to think of it I may have been salivating at the time...it's the lithium you know hahahaha.

Having been with CHC Helicopters ( Australia) formally Lloyd Helicopters for over 11 years, I am not aware of any 'blacklist'. Infact, over the years we have employeed around 5 (possibly more)ex Vic police airwing drivers, either full-time or on a casual basis. Like most companies there are minimum standards, contract requirements, client requirements which all play apart in the selection process.

Very strong words. The initals of the person who called the PAW pilots 'cowboys' wouldn't be D.S would it?
The NSCA/Lloyd hangover will never go away. The name changes but the managers are all the same. We all know how they stitched up the contract with the PAW 5 years ago. Some people even suggest that there was a person on the inside who made sure that a bat was shoved fairly and squarely up the backside of VicPol. (2.5 million for 4 helicopters and 7 mill worth of spares!!!) The right people for the job would be nice wouldn't it? Or are they trying to hide something?

Interesting stuff. I guess its time for someone at the Airwing to make comment. I have 6000 hrs of which 4000 are on medium sized ME. 20 years of professional helo experience of which the last 15 years has been spent at the Airwing involved directly with Victorian EMS. I have over 700 documented retrievals of patients mostly being primary jobs in all kinds of weather, day & night. I have 14 IFR renewals. I have an ATPL(H) and a BSc. I have no incidents or accidents and I am highly commended by the management of Air Ambulance Victoria. I applied for Bendigo.....didn't even get an interview! Go figure!

You didn't get an interview?? what a disgrace! I'm aware of a pilot with 3000 hours, a CPL(H) only, no CIR and no SAR/EMS time that applied and won a position. He didn't even send a CV in..they called him!!
There were two other ex-airwing pilots with extremely high qualifications that were also not given an interview.
Did the cops really upset them that much when CHC took over the maintenance they they are still so bitter and twisted about it all?
Shouldn't have won the contracts and shouldn't be operating on the scale they are in Victoria now.

Nobody is doubting the authenticity of the document but buisness is buisness. If the police air wing have been taken for a ride then more fool them.
If things are so great at the air
wing why are there so many seeming to want to jump ship and work for a company they obviously despise, any wonder some people don't get interviews.

Actually we at the Air Wing don't 'despise' CHC(Aust) at all. I have been there since the contract with Lloyds started and I have seen little of this anamosity. The Police Force hierarchy decided to negotiate the contract with Lloyds without support by us aviators and as a result stuffed it and signed a contract that no aviation minded operator ever would. My understanding is that they accept this and it won't happen again when the contract is up for tender in two years time.
Actually there is very liitle 'jumping the ship' going on at the Air Wing. On the contrary, I was the only pilot who applied for CHC and that was because I specifically wanted to go to the country. With the introduction of new N3 helos with EFIS and the 4 day on / 4 day off roster morale is pretty good.

There is clearly more to getting a job than just having hours in the book and passing a few renewals.
Some people think that because they have a job with one organisation that the rest of the world is just waiting for them to apply.
This is not the case!!!

You're right chopchop. There is more to getting a job than having hours in the book and a few renewals. You got to have reasonable experience and good culture of safe flying. All that combined should at least get you an interview and then you can vet the pack. There's no guarantees, I know but you'd think one would be given at least the credit of an interview especially if one has been actively involved in the same field with an excellent track record....don't you think? But then in our small insidious inbred profession the saying, "its not what you know but who you know", that holds true most of the time.....
Why do I say that? Well it so happens that a pilot at the Airwing knows someone at head office Adelaide and was asked by that person if he wanted a job at Bendigo because they needed pilots. This Airwing pilot didn't originally apply.
Therefore there's probably no black-list but sometimes one does not get a look-in because somebody has said something malicious about you or spread a rumour that is totally unbased....hint, hint.

Although my flying is strictly "weekend only",I do have an understanding of the equal opportunity legislation. Put simply, if anybody fails in an employment application for reasons other than merit, then they have a case. If you were not successful with your helicopter pilot application to CHC because you are a policeman, you are black or brindle, you have the wrong handshake, you are too old, or you mix with the wrong crowd then you have a case. Today any employer is most unwise to reject job applications out of hand and then employ a less qualified person. The govt. organisations policing this area are quite good. You should give them a try!

It seems to me that people have lost the delicate art of comunication. Perhaps rather than taking CHC to task on a web page, a simple telephone call to discuss the reasons people weren't selected would be the gentlemanly thing to do. Never complain sideways.

MrPlod & Army427. Your right MrPlod that it would be nice to ask why, if for no other reason but to find out from a professional development perspective. When a key member from CHC was asked why not even an interview the reply was that company policy forbade him from making comment. So there you go.
And yes Army427 the Police as CHC will not make comment on recruitment decisions (I think they are probably fearfull of litigation)! And you know what some people missed out at the Air Wing because of RUMOURS that seem to bound around our little industry and happen to filter to the Chief Pilot who then formulates an undesirable opinion. Don't kid yourself it happens and happens alot!
