Hi guys again, got hold of Atlas and steve was very helpfull, hopefully something might come of it?!? Got me thinking though, how are (if you do it non mill.) are you supposed to pay for it? Especially if you go it alone! which i was told is not the best way of doing it anyway (they say a min of 2 so, one goes down the other stays inside and VV.) But it`s going to be bloody expensive!!!!

Well, now that we are throwing our experience around....
I have been flying EMS/SAR helicopters for about 20 years and probably have flown with as many pilots as I have had hot dinners.
I did not make up "Kelpies" but it fits nicely.
Stop being so sensitive about it and have a laugh.
You don't see me getting angry at being called a "Glorified bus driver" because sometimes that is what we are!

Nothing wrong with being in the back and having a bit of a chat!
It's good to have someone with their awareness to keep an eye on your six o'clock in those tight situations.

Oz SAR/EMS crewman
Hi all,
This is mainly directed at the Oz SAR/EMS crews. I have always had an interest in becoming a crewman for a company like the Westpac rescue service or careflight. I guess i am after some advice from people that are currently in these positions to find out what's the best way of getting a foot in the door in the future.
I have been doing some research and have found that Careflight on the Gold Coast run a course which gives you your HUET and Winch endorsement and also about 7 hours training in a Squirrel and B412. Has anybody done this course and was it worth while or is there alternate ways that you have got your start.
I am currently working as a LAME and have spent quite a bit of time working on these aircraft so am familiar with what is involved in the job.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Ref: EMS SAR aircrewman
G'Day Mate, I am currently an aircrewman at an EMS Base, I was fortunately able to get my qualifications through the military, but for those like yourself....there are a number of different ways of getting your qualification.
1. Start as a Rescue crewman and after some time with that company they should give you a winch endorsement. This helps with gaining experience in the front seat regarding Co-pilot duties and logging hours. Most EMS bases like to employ aircrewman with min 500hrs, but at this stage there is a shortage of aircrewman so some are heard of employing people with less experience. Most preferred since there is no cost to you.
2. Careflight QLD does aircrew training with some nice added qualifications. The down fall with this is....cost which is no different than other training schools. After qualification is acheived, there is still no guarantee of employment due to lack of experience. However as I mentioned before some companies are employing due to lack of experienced aircrewman. Its your call.
I hope this helps your inquiry

oz crew training
The Hoff,
A word of advice with Aircrewman training at Gold Coast, RACQ Careflight:
1. Its incredibly expensive for such a short period of flying training exposure and your probably going to have to have deep pockets in order to get a qualfication which is not garanteed.
2. Employment is not garanteed at the end of course as the oz industry regulator does not state what amount of flying training experience you should have etc as there is not real regs for Crew Persons. The Big operators have their own training and career program and as such some may not recognise the training etc
3. Advanced Bell 412 Helicopter winch training will not help much at the Ab-initio phase until you have at least 250 hours of utility/winch exposure under your belt. By then you will have forgotten the equipment skills associated wtih that aircraft and unless your onboard with a company etc you will be looking for more cash!!
Food for thought.

Oz Aircrewman Training
In the very near future within the Australian aviation industry, it will be possible to be trained in a path of progression from Wireman to Rescue Crewman through to Aircrewman. Any suitably equipped flying training school that is an accredited RTO for aviation training can provide the training, as long as it meets the standards as directed within the Training Package.Just as pilots have a formal training and qualification pathway, so too will the Aircrewman role. Expect this to occur within the next 6-8 weeks.
This also applies to Night Aided Vision training and qualifications.

Crewman training
Hi Heli,
Well there are a few options open to you. I take it you wish to try and get on a SAR operation. The first options is the simplest join the forces thats where most off us come from. The second is go to Aussie and do a short course with one off the training providers out there on Helicopter hoist operations they also teach basic airmanship. The other is to speak to the sales team at FBH heliservices that was the way bristow use to load on there no aircrew paramedics when they had the MCA Contract.
Your going up against stiff competion there a quite a few Naval aircrewman coming out also RAF Loadmaster as well.
Good luck ether way.

If you are in Australia, CareFlight, QLD run initial aircrewman courses/winch tickets.

I too am very keen to pursue a career as a SAR crewman however pause comma I have a few little things going against me....
I suffer from colour blindness and wear subscription spectacles which bring my eyesight back to normal, subsequently I am unable to go down the Military route.
I am UK based and have been around the forces, in particular SAR, all of my life as my father is serving aircrew with the RAF. This is where I have got the SAR bug from and have become previously frustrated as all of my attempts to get into SAR have failed miserably...
I have been in touch with CHC and received the one liner that there are no vacancies and they would keep my details on file. They have yet to say whether they would recruit someone ab-initio and whether my eyesight would be a stumbling block. Realistically I think I know the answer to those questions but I still await their official party line.
After some research I discovered Careflight offer training courses for SAR crewman and have e-mailed to request information. I would be grateful if someone could advise me whether Careflight would be a good way to go (the caveat being my eyesight being acceptable) and what employment opportunities could be on offer to a low experience person with Careflight's training courses under their belt.
Am I missing any other avenues or, as I expect, is the likelihood of me fulfilling my ambition a pipe dream?

Helicopter rescue crewman
I am an advanced helicopter rescue crewman (45 hours on a jet ranger) also with a few hours training to become a hoist operator on an augusta chopper. Where do I go from here as I'm looking at obtaining my chopper license later and doing some flying off the mega yachts. Anyone out there looking for someone with my qualifications??
Appreciate any comments...thanks.

If you,re looking for the same kind of work, then try the search button .
Going from the back up to the front seat, then I guess you would just join the same line as all the other newly qualified CPL's, once you have it in your hand. As for the yachts there was a thread recently, and I think you would need plenty stick time. As these are not entry level jobs.

And I am afraind that 45 hours on a Jetranger does not make you an advanced helicopter rescue crewman, sorry.
Guys ....maybe just maybe he is an actual advanced rescue crewman who happens to have 45 hr of jet box time and you misunderstood his post ??
A lot of you guys here use this forum as a method of telling everybody what big dicks you have maybe he is deluded and thinks 45 hrs makes him anything ....but maybe he is not , so why dont we wait and ask him ?
If he has any sense he will have seen the quality of "professional " response you can sometimes get here and decided against asking .

Crewman courses
Does anyone know of any organisations in Australia (apart from the ADF) that offer Helicopter crewman courses and what the pre-requisites are (assuming CPL-H theory completed)?
Cheers.
Appologies, I should have used search...
