We use Pilot ANR not bad passive, and good ANR, rechargeable battery's, plug in cords, cell\music socket if required, 3 years no problems with 4 sets.
Also have Lightspeed Mach 3 with custom ear moulds very good very light just a bit fiddly to start with, if you can get use to the in ear thing, you don't know they are on, no batteries to go flat either, don't know if they now do single plug when I got mine only GA twin plug available,

I just bought the lightspeed zulu and absolutely love it.

Works fantastic with and without ANR. Feels great to wear. Don't have to much need to make phone calls in the air but great to have in an emergency - seems to work well when I tested it.

I've just come off the phone with DC, and was massively impressed in an age where everyone is trying to weedle out of customer service..

Had a speaker go bad, sent them back (they're about 4 years old and well used), they called me back....

"Mr Bluestack, 'one' of the speakers was oscillating, we changed 'both', and the headband was skanky, we changed it...And the mike was clogged, we changed it...oh and the battery pack was corroded so we changed it for the nice new, small 9v pack....oh yeah....that'll be $70..."

fantastic...

Headsets.....What's good?

So, I know I could post this in another topic and perhaps get some more feedback but I'm looking for opinions on headsets particularly used in helicopters. I'm starting flight school for helicopters and I'm looking to buy a decent headset. I have the opportunity to buy a Bose X headset that is used but in good condition for $500. I'm not sure if I want to pull the trigger on them or not. They felt comfortable but that was only for a few minutes and I've never used them in flight.

I've used my DC H10-60's in a small Cessna for about 40 hours and that's all I have to compare to. Therefore I'm asking the pros for their expertise!

Thanks guys.

A pair of Bose X for $500? Buy them. Buy them now. Without a doubt the best headset on the market.

(Just make sure that you always carry a spare set of batteries with you.)

Still a good deal if they are 3 years old and showing some normal wear and tear.....ie scratches and so forth?

Does anyone know after 2 years will Bose still service them for free?

I'll need to get adaptor to GA (two plugs) and when I looked it up on Transair etc, they offer UK Heli or US Heli to GA.

My Bose X was bought in the US (heli plug), so I presume US heli -> GA would do.

What's the deal with UK Heli plug format anyway?
Do Eurocopters have different plug compared to Robinson, Schweizer or Sikorsky products?
Especially as it says 'UK', so maybe a thing of Westland's past?

I forgot to fetch it when in the US. (last minute packing, SO me..)
Now buying from the US with my US card and crazy shipping doesn't make sense so I'll have to fetch it here. I'm not buying another headset for FW flying. That'd be even crazier.

Better safe than sorry. Or ending up with adaptor for adaptor

If they still work properly, what does it matter how they look? I would try and test them in an aircraft first though, if you're concerned.

Dunno, I'm afraid. Have you tried looking on Bose's website for their warranty t&cs? I also imagine that you'll need the original proof of purchase or warranty details.

So I picked the set up for $450. It is used but in really good condition. The guy is really particular about things and he's a good friend of a guy I know who also told me that he was real careful with his stuff. The guy I bought it from said he sent it in twice for repairs and they did it no questions asked and sent them back. I guess this will be a good test!

I'm very happy with them and can't wait to get to use them in a ship.

Has anyone used the Helicopter zulu with the doors off?
If so how was the ANR? I fly alot without doors in a Hot and Humid (lots of sweat and rain) climate, any idea how they perform in those conditions?

Thanks for any answers

used my Lightspeed Zulu so far in Bell47, R44, AS350, AS355 and Jetbanger. All work well but I did have some problems initially with 'buffeting' when I moved my head or when I was eating food; I bent the headband a little to make them fit tighter and they work a treat now.

Not sure on the doors off situation - would recommend you try a pair before committing to the purchase of them for this use but the passive suppression is far better than th Bose (which I sold to buy the Zulu).

Headsets for the R22

Old one I know, but here goes!

Looking at the DC H10-36 headset for the R22. Plug type not an issue, but I am uncertain as to whether the dynamic mic will work with the Peltor which I think have electret units.

Has anyone got any experience of using DC headsets (H10-36 and other) with the R22? Should I go for the H10-13.4

What works and what doesnt? This is more a question of possible compatablilty issues I'm looking at, I understand about plug types and impedence difference etc.

If anyone has tried a successfull match up, I would like to hear from them.

Any help much appreciated

Thankyou

I had the David Clark 10-H56 ANR headset which was over £500 but well worth it in anything other than a two bladed helicopter. They made a funny whooping sound in 206's/205's so I switched off the ANR in those.
They went missing whilst I was working in NI, I'd like them back please if anyone has them now, they had my name on and a US jack plug. I have the reciepts and serial number.
A quick PM and no questions will be asked ok.

Mmmmm ...

IIRC this HAS question been raised before on this forum .... try the search facility ....

Having said that .... I have been just bought a David Clark H-10-66 and it is EXCELLENT .... for me the sound attenuation is outstanding ... NO BATTERIES to fail .... AND it has the feature of being able to switch Mic impedience from high to low depending on which a/c I am scheduled to fly at any time (ie AW139 Vs BH412).

My last h'set was also a David Clark H-10-30 (??) which has just been retired after some 30 years of service ... it has had 3-4 mics replaced and prob the 2-3 speaker inserts over the years ... it is still serviceable and reliable ... which some might say is much better than its owner!

Cheers

Lightspeed Zulu on Helicopter Ops

Does anyone out there use a lightspeed zulu for commercial operations, oil rigs etc?

I would be interested to hear your comments and how they stand up to high use and the impedance that some aircraft have can limit the bose X.

Thanks
Peter

We had one to trial and it was FAR better than my BOSE Aviation X in noise attenuation and comfort, only problem was it was a low impedance mic so we couldn't actually use it in flight on the AS332L. I am waiting for Lightspeed to makea high Impedance version so I can replace my Bose.

The reason I'm surfing around on headsets is that my Bose X that I've had for 4 years now is going to have to go in for repair again! That will make it 3 times in 4 years. I love the Bose for the comfort, but reliability and durability are not great.

The last 2 times I sent it for repair the cost was zero, so I will give Bose 2 thumbs up for customer service.

One of the pilots here on base (flying the 76C++ high impedance) has a Lightspeed and he is very happy with it. I think that will be my next headset as I agree with other posters that the Bose has zero passive reduction and the constant repair is getting tiresome.

I am waiting for Lightspeed to makea high Impedance version so I can replace my Bose.
As far as I can tell the only thing Lightspeed makes is high impedance. I don't see an option for low on the Zulu.

Go check out skygeek. They sell low impedance boxes so your high impedance headset will convert to low. I use it on my DC's. Uses a 9 volt battery.
I'm sure you can buy these in any aviation store too.
