What Limits

I think the rotorbrake mod would not close the throttle. If the brake was applied at flight idle. The mod would prevent operation of the brake.

The throttle is gated in the fully open open position and the only way to close it would be to haul on the brake with enough force to break it out of the gate.

I think the mod is to prevent operation of the brake at flight idle and to prevent throttle advance with the brake on.

However it's all a long time ago so my memory could be at fault.

Not so unusual... there was also misprinted serials after the workshop.
But hey, who pay attention on such trifles anyway

The brake: I understand where 311 is coming from - you've got this lever lowered right in front of you .. how could you miss it! But .. after the 100th time of seeing something in the same position I've heard the mind can do funny things.
Not only that Savoia but at 04:00 when you have been flying all night on single-pilot NVG Ops in NI nothing is that obvious - believe me. I was once so knackered that I thought that I was releasing the rotor brake but was actually advancing the SSL (one should be moved quickly, the other very slowly!) I think the engine surge woke everyone up at Bessbrook.

Pray tell the purpose of the bullet-shaped attachments mounted on the for'ard landing gear of SP's 'Navvy' Gazelles!

If we're going for military pairs, then here's my contribution:

I would imagine it to be part of the smoke dispensing system for displays it being a Shark machine. But then it could be some secret Navvy bit of kit.

My theory on the 'Navvy' origin is that it had just landed at Middle Wallop and while the crews were in the mess the REME got at it.

Bullet shaped pods on RN Gazelles. Think they were the coloured smoke pods used by the Sharks display team- although not 100% sure.

Edited to say - I've looked at some Sharks images and now think the smoke pods were mounted on the aft skid leg, so the pods remain a mystery. Was it a pod for a distress beacon in the event of ditching...that sort of rings a bell with me?

But I thought the Sharks used exposed cannisters as circled below:

Pussers Pair displaying for relatives of wingsparade

Still remember those days at culdrose, especially the tours with the sharks, as I was old enough, to drive the van with the attached caravan to the display sites, while they were flying there.
The caravan was used to give the posters and the stickers away...

Greetings Flying Bull

Great stuff FB!

I have a vast amount of Blue Eagles memorabilia from the late 70's and early 80's (most of it signed by various team members) and which I need to dig out and photograph one of these fine days!

In the meantime a small snapshot from one of their performances:

Now you mentioned it, I don't exactly remember, but it wasn't smoke cannister shrouds or anything to do with the smoke generators. I think it was a prehistoric ELT.

Can anyone help me upload some piccies?

I've noticed some Gazelles have their horizontal stabiliser endplates cut down to tiny sections. Does this have an effect to reduce drag or increase tail rotor authority perhaps?

Tickle: On the stretched versions only from what I've seen.

Am also keen to discover the rationale behind this mod.

IIRC, reduced stability requirement because of the longer fuselage on the 'stretched' Gazelles.

The attachment on the fwd stbd crosstube isn't anything to do with the smoke flares: they were on the rear crosstube, either side, with a highly technical piece of string back into the cockpit to fire the flare when needed

Another view of the pod: I've asked another Sharks driver without any luck so far

It was an underwater sonar beacon (prob Dukane) to assist in locating wreckage should one ditch, I suspect the mod was installed after The Sharks Display Team tragedy in 1977 during a practice serial over Mounts Bay. I recall a later mod put it in the tail boom.
