Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
UAE Prime Minister dies on Gold Coast
The Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has died on Queensland's Gold Coast.
The sheikh, who was in his mid-60s, was also the emir of Dubai.
It is believed he died at a luxury hotel this afternoon.
The UAE Government has declared 40 days of mourning for the sheikh.
A Government statement says the country has lost a historical leader who dedicated his life to building the nation and doing good for its people.
Sheikh Maktoum officially took over as ruler of Dubai in 1990, when his father Sheikh Rashid died after a long illness.
It was not clear how many wives and children he had.
The sheikh usually maintained a low profile, preferring to allow his younger brothers to run the day-to-day affairs of Dubai.
He was best known internationally as the co-owner of Dubai's Godolphin stables, which competes in major horse races.
Jim Carden from the Brisbane Airport Corporation says a special Emirates jumbo jet is on stand-by to fly the sheikh's body home.
"The plane belonging to his highness and the royal party is currently being refuelled in preparation for the transportation of his highnesses body back to Dubai in order to observe the customary burial," he said.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, the UAE's defence minister, is Sheikh Maktoum's brother and heir who will automatically take over the leadership of Dubai.
Officials said UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan will appoint a new premier and vice president for the Gulf Arab state, that is a federation of seven emirates.

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
And the relevance to Helicopters is?????
He was probably "on the job anyway", that's why he goes to Australia....that and to buy a horse or ten.
I have to ask, does anyone really care enough to warrant your news flash?
ROTORHEADS FORUM.....This is not a "news" site. We can watch TV or log on to CNN or BBC.

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
If we are to belive the old addage, ...... then quiet possibly Sheikh Mohammed is a clear winner, For undoubtably he did have all the toys!
Vfr
Addendum, I am led to believe that all natives of Dubai are fabulously looked after by the state, they pay no tax and are even paid a salary and yearly bonus by the government who are headed and controlled by the Sheikhs family, for that reason the entire Sheikhdom has my respect!

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
Many years ago I worked on the accounts for all Sheikh Maktoum's UK racing interests (stud farms and racing/training). Certainly as far as his horses went, money was no object. He did not believe in having any of the horses put down if they had a broken leg - if it costs thousands in rehab care for that horse, then thousands were spent! The premises were luxurious and it was a joy to work there!
However, I thought the next eldest of the brothers was Hamdam Al Maktoum whilst Sheikh Mohammed was the third eldest; the youngest being Sheikh Ahmad.
Cheers

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
It has relevance for those of us who work in Dubai. From what I can gather in my limited time here he was one of the few rulers in this world who was trying to do something for his people, and that alone deserves some respect.

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
Judging by his petulant outburst Hippolite must be a remarkably ill informed Rotorhead if he fails to see the significance of the passing of Sheik Maktoum. His family have long been significant contributors to the UK onshore helicopter world operating at one stage two S76`s and a Dauphin but also playing a big part in VIP helicopter operations in Dubai itself.
Open your mouth a bit wider Hippolite and get both feet in!

Re: Sheikh Maktoum from Dubai Passes Away
Having working for the Maktoum family riding their race horses in Dubai for 10 years, I would just like to say how sad it is that Sheikh Maktoum passed away.

Operations in the Gulf
Hello chaps,
anyone got some information about operations in the Gulf?
I know there have been quite a few threads already but would be interested in some general information still.
What are the schedules like and what kind of money can you expect?
Any information would be great.
Cheers
