Todays HPL exam
Just wondering what people thought about todays HPL exam? Personally i thought it was a nightmare considering it is often called a 'banker' exam!!
there was a question about decision making?
1 an expert makes it automatically
2 it is valid for a short time
3 it is irreversible
other option complete rubbish.
Anyone agree? or shall i just hit the beer and sulk some more?

I did it last month so comment on that exam but there are some pretty strangely worded questions in the syllabus so i sympathise. It's usually one that i find i do better than i think i have done in, so hopeully you'll be the same.
I think answer 2 is probably the right one there. The point they're trying to emphasize is that what is a correct decision made at one point may not be as time/distance/other factors pass and you shouldn't blindly stick to it but should reevaluate the situation in light of new events.

Hiya mate
I had the misfortune of sitting Hardcore Porn yesterday.
I put answer 2 about decisions being only a short term because the rest to me seemed like a load of sh*te.
I think that the question is getting at the fact that in good crm, a decision can always be revisited if time/circumstances and situation allow. The first decision is not necessarily the best decision.
Anyway asides from that what did anyone else think of the hypoxia from huge amounts of Gz's?!
I am putting this on the web in the hope that the Belgrano will pull the common sense cb and pull this question.
adios

Here's another I remembered
A pilots breakfest (Not 100% on wording):
A) Breakfest should contain 25% of daily calories
B) light protein and low carb diet.
C) X
D) X
Anyone know if it's A or B?

Well I sat it too and found it the worst of the week overall.
As to the breakfast question, I thought that a moderate / high protein diet and a mod / high carb diet would be appropriate rather than a low one. My Mother always told me not to skip breakfast so I'd think that it should be about 25% of your intake and thus I went for A. However, no idea if it was right.
Glad other people found it equally hard, but I hope we all do okay!

tough one but at least it makes more sense than some of the CAA questions!!! ill go for D breakfast what the ***** that?
On the hpl exam i also put 25% of calories at breakfast.
Another few questions that stumped me were what heightens the effects of g forces?
I think i went for D hypoxia, heat and vibrations (no idea why i included heat).
And there was also a carbon monoxide question where all the options made little sense.
God damn it!!!

I fear HPL may be becoming out of control in some topic areas
These precise questions will be scrutinised and all will come out in the wash
I hope that you do not fail by a few percent due to a question about a pilot's breakfast its embarrassing to believe that you were asked this
In a much earlier exam we were supposed to know a toxic dose of caffeine - even pharmacologists do not have to learn this for an exam.
The concept highest dose is worst worked - but still.
The other thing which is bad is the the multi - multi choice answer
ie pick the most correct from the list of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Questions should be concise and esaily understandable if you have read the subject matter

Hey guys
Made the HPL 3 days ago here in Sweden. Got a lot of questions regarding stress in particular and illusions like vertigo and stuff on the physiology part. Must say that the breakfast question looked really odd!! Is the UK CAA mean to you guys

In Sweden they just have like 3 different tests in each subject so it's easier for them to exclude bad questions. In order to minimize the effect of questions floating around, FTOs need to test the student in the subject where a pass is mandatory in order to get endorsed for the CAA test. It's easy for the CAA, but involves alot of hassle for the individual student.
Had an appeal of a question where they came back to me saying that the answer I chose was technically correct considering the wording of the question. However, they couldn't give me credit for it because if I knew what they meant to write I probably would have answered differently! I passed the test anyway so I'm just going to try not to raise my BP too much.
Something is good though - they allow you to get a temporary result the very same day and at the same time have a look at the questions you got wrong.

Aim High,
I agree with your sentiment. Yes, some of the CAA exams are a guessathon and are badly implemented aspecially for subjects like HPL.
However, I think there is some value in the concept of a "best answer" style of examination and also the need to work with badly presented and incomplete information. After all, these are the things that confuse people and cause accidents in the operational world. I think that the CAA should, if that is their aim, develop that rational so it is examined in a useful and fair way.
Question for all,
Just supposing the exams were fair with properly worded questions. Would it be unreasonable to deduct marks for incorrect answers for some of the questions? Something like -1 for no answer and deduct the full marks for the question if it is answered incorrectly. Obviously, with the exams in their current form that would be utterly unreasonable. But isn't it the case that CFIT is caused navigational errors and that the exams don't really reflect the need to be correct or say "I don't know".

C) X

Well, if you roughly breakdown a meal's content into fat, protein and carbohydrate, option "B" describes a meal that is low in both protein and carbohydrate. It therefore will be relatively very high in fat. Eating a diet with a high fat content is of course not recommended and therefore the "best answer" must be "A". [Unless of course options "C" and "D" made more sense!]
