Thank you for your support Jonzarno.
I am pleased to say that the money you have transferred to the Fat Bloke in Flip Flops account has meant I am back up and running again.

Damage was extensive, and expensive requiring both new sole plate and a new upper strap. Luckily these are readily available pre-assembled.

What do you think of the repair and new livery...

No more flip flop posts from me. Just trying to lighten the mood a little.
I will try and kep on topic from now on..Honest.

Anyone know for sure if TCT went to this event to speak?
Beyond: 17th-18th Sept - The Steppes Travel Festival

Although there is a mention in the Sunday events list, I cannot find anything on their blog, or their FB page. Lots of info out there on the other speakers though.

Normally if TCT even farts or attends at an event that gets her free publicity or a drink in recognition of something she did not do, she acknowledges it on FB and Twitter by gushing "what a fabulous day she had at/with/attending..."

From the link you kindly provided...

"Beyond by Steppes Travel was a two-day travel festival at the Royal Geographical Society on Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th September 2016.

Sunday took the audience ‘Beyond the Ordinary’ with the ‘world’s greatest living explorer’ Sir Ranulph Fiennes; National Geographic ‘Adventurer of the Year’ Alastair Humphreys, expedition leader & marine biologist Monty Halls; explorer Benedict Allen; ‘Bird in a Biplane’ Tracey Curtis-Taylor and Edurne Pasaban, the *first woman to summit all fourteen 8000 peaks in the world."

Both in the past tense...

Yes I had sussed that. I am asking for confirmation if she actually did speak, or if the text for the Sunday gig is a simple cut-and-paste of who was expected to speak. The alarm bells are that, as mentioned above, so much as a fart prompts FB/Twitter posts. Also, looking at Steppes Travel FB page we can see lots of mention of the other speakers but not TCT. On top of that, her image is on the advertising poster but not on the Steppes page now.

I think the song should be JERUSALEM

Stumbled across this https://www.thewi.org.uk/become-a-me...pinney-theatre

The summary has the following to say:

Northamptonshire County Federation of WIs' Annual General Meeting [october] 2014
Spinney Theatre, Northampton
Delegate's report
This year NCFWI returned to Spinney Theatre, Northampton, to hold its Annual General Meeting. The speaker was Tracey Curtis-Taylor, the intrepid pilot who flew alone over Africa in a1928 bi-plane on a journey of over 8000 miles. We were also honoured that our National Chairman, Janice Langley, joined us for the evening, along with local dignitaries, local Federation guests and above all, our fantastic members.

and the actual delegates report... https://www.thewi.org.uk/__data/asse...2014.docx#2014 NCFWI Delegate's report ...expands a little more :

The guest speaker was Tracy Curtis –Taylor , a truly inspiring woman. She spoke about her epic solo flight in a restored bi-plane from Capetown in South Africa to the UK recreating the journey of Mary Heath in 1928.She told about her adventures along the way over war torn African countries and plans to write a book about it. Her next challenge will be to fly to Australia copying Amy Johnson’s journey in 1930.

I wonder where the WI got the impression it was conducted "alone" and "solo"

Perhaps Sam Rutherford can elighten us on the truth behind this paragraph.

She spoke about her epic solo flight in a restored bi-plane from Capetown in South Africa to the UK recreating the journey of Mary Heath in 1928.She told about her adventures along the way over war torn African countries
Most of the pictures I have seen were deliberately taken in a way to suggest low level flying. Very dramatic but totally unnecessary. Take a look at the background below.

Okay then! Here you go:

She spoke about her epic

Possibly, it's a great trip!

solo

Ah, - well I think we all know about that.

flight in a restored bi-plane from Capetown in South Africa to the UK

Correct.

recreating the journey of Mary Heath in 1928.

'Broadly following the route of...' might be more accurate

She told about her adventures along the way

Correct

over war torn African countries

Well, a little overdramatic. Southern Sudan (not South Sudan) had some rebel activity. So the plural 'countries' is incorrect

There are dozens of really well experienced women pilots in the UK who when placed alongside TCT would make her look like the novice pilot she is.

Tizi Hodson for example.

Probably one of the most experienced woman pilots in Great Britain, Tizi's over 13,000 hours include 5000 flying big jets and many patient hours spent instructing everything from basic flying skills, through aerobatics and training experienced pilots to get their commercial licences and instrument ratings. She spent several years bush flying in Africa, a season as a full time formation aerobatic display pilot flying an RF4 with the Unipart
However it is interesting no one from the British Women Pilots Association has joined this thread.

Well, I've been listening quietly, occasionally commenting...and I may not be the only one. I'm a member, though not been on the committee or very involved for a number of years. What are you expecting from the BWPA? Do you expect them to comment officially? Why?

Looking at the BWPA Facebook page and doing a search you'll find TCT certainly got several mentions there as an inspirational figure a while back, but little if anything recently. Perhaps following the increased publicity about this issue just like other organisations they might be finding themselves in a difficult situation and would rather not comment - who knows?

Interesting the BWPA did "advertise" ahead of time the unveiling of the Amy Johnson statue that Jay mentioned earlier ( permalink #1424) but they don't seem to have followed it up on the Facebook page with any further reports or images.

I helped train some of the RAF's first female pilots almost thirty years ago (the captain of the first RAF all female fast jet crew was one of my UAS students).

Now we are well into the twenty first century I feel that it's slightly "old hat" to make such a big thing about T. C-T's exploits just because she is a woman. The HCAP award seems to be recognition that some old dinosaurs still exist therein and have only just awakened from slumber.

So true. Awarding a female for an accomplishment, with her gender as an element of the award is kind of saying to all other females that they had not quite achieved what men have yet. Absolutely silly.

Thank you females for bearing children for us, and being the opposite gender to us. For everything else we men are no better and no worse than females. I don't think it award or even noteworthy that my male gender contributed to my accomplishments in life, why would a female want an award which had the effect of separating her from other females, particularly when she waves the flag of trying to inspire them! It would be like my giving an award for being my beautiful daughter at family dinner, what do I want my other two daughters to think?

We are past the time in history when females should need to be awarded with gender as an element. TCT, perhaps without forethought, has done a noticeable disservice to females. Rather than rubbing shoulders with well dressed people holding drinks, she should be quietly hiring a bus to take eager youths to the airport to learn, and standing quietly in the back of the group while an aviation professional she hired provides some inspirational instruction. A few summers of doing that every weekend, and seeking no credit or adoration, and I could support a non gender based award for her being inspirational.....

I have to agree Step Turn.

UK tv presenter Carol Vorderman is an example of how to promote aviation to youngsters without shouting me me me!

For those overseas Carol is the lady at the back who is not dressed up like a Christmas tree.

Given the large number of speaking engagements that TCT has attended I am curious as to why some of the UK based contributors to this forum haven't gone along to these events and confronted her?

Nice idea but looking at the "speaking" bit of her website , it looks as if her engagements for this year are being kept hidden from public view/yet to be published...either that or my poor IT skills have let me down again.

She avoided the Goodwood Flying Club appearance last Thursday but did turn up at the RNRM charity dinner on Friday when she also appeared in the local paper, the Portsmouth News.,http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/def...ight-1-7593423
That story must have caused some interesting small talk at the dinner.

I doubt she will be attending the AGM of the Light Aircraft Association in a few weeks time when ther is a motion to remove her 'navigation' award.

Which places the focus on the next big event a few days later.

From what I hear by all accounts she will not be at the Honourable Company of Air Pilots awards dinner
when she is due to get a Masters Medal for sitting in the back seat of Ewald Gritschs Stearman

Time Peake had it easy in the International Space Station while Tracey was fighting fog, sandstorms and the 'searing heat' of Australia.
HCAP are burning the midnight oil trying to write her citation for the third time.

It has been suggested to me that the reason that the Spirit of Artemis is registered to 3G Aviation in the USA is to overcome insurance and other operational issues.

The only licence TCT holds is a UK ppl. That means her suggestions of carrying ' camera and production crew from time to time' would be in breach of her licence which does not allow commercial work.

I doubt Nylon Films insurers would have covered their employees flying in an aircraft piloted by a 1500 ppl.

Both the Africa trip and the UK to Sydney 'adventure' were commercial operations funded by the sponsors for publicity and also part of a tv documenary operation. The aircraft was fitted out with cameras to record footage for commercial aerial work.

As Ewald is a commercial pilot and instructor he is of course allowed to undertake filming work and 'dual flying' with a ppl.

I understand the insurance for the airframe ,although placed with an Indian company ,actually went on risk at Lloyds in London?

This would have been a custom policy and not a normal 'off the shelf' job?

Despite her claims to have been the 'sole' pilot of the Spirit of Artemis I do not think she could have legally flown for hire or reward.

Am I missing something?

Interesting reading on Nylon Films on Companies House website. Incorporated in October 2011, filed accounts for a "dormant company" for 2012,13,14 then dissolved in 2015. If correct who paid the film crews expenses, salary and equipment rental on the Stearman/TCT project as no expenses were recorded. Or if they were getting paid for the production no revenue was shown in the accounts. Odd !

If you agreed to show an airline's and a hotel's logo on your aircraft in exchange for a flight and rooms wouldn't they be a form of 'consideration' and hence make your flying a commercial operation and outside the privileges of a PPL?
