Thumbs up Welcome one and all!

Great idea for a forum, everybody should start here.

Let's get a decent thread going with a sort of 'ice-breaker', 'getting to know you' kind of thing. How about what stage we are all at in our training or something along those lines? There was a thread in Wannabes a while ago about time taken to first solo which was very successful.

I personally am waiting for the 'perfect' day to fly my qualifying cross county, I've got roughly 45 hours TT, 7 of which are solo.

Anybody else?

Gooday,
Got my PPL in 1976 at Redcliffe Aero Club Australia. Total 250 hours.
Had a long lapse due pressure from ex-wife.
Just getting back into it again, revision training for my bi-annual flight review, and conversion from c172 to pa28.
Now flying out of Caboolture and Redcliffe.

Got addicted in the mid 1970s at the school Combined Cadet Force with Chippys, Bulldogs, Puma rides etc etc and spent weekends pushbiking it to Blackbushe and White Waltham. Eventually found enough of the brown flying and drinking vouchers to scrape together for lessons with Liz Inwood at Wycombe, brought a share in a C150E which I had for some 12 years and now have part of a Piper Arrow 4 at Blackbushe. Met lots of friends through flying and look to do at least 1 touring adventure each year - got to Corsica in May. Anyone out there know if Liz is still involved?

Since we're all chipping in, here's my saga....

Having bought the plans for an Evans VP-1, I was going to built my own. However, since I was in the RAF at the time based at Gutersloh, the RAF Laarbruch Flying Club offered their only F150G for sale. It had the old style instrument layout and the engine was over TBO and running on condition, so they decided to sell it. Since it hadn't had VAT paid on it, they needed to sell it to a Brit in Germany. With the help of a 100% bank loan, I bought the aircraft for £3K and had it delivered to Gutersloh. Since I was on a Harrier Sqn at the time, the Boss allowed G-AVIA to share a Hardened Aircraft Shelter (or HAS) with two Harriers. I recruited instructors myself. One was a Cavalry Major from Bielefeld, one a Buccaneer pilot from Laarbruch, one a local German QFI and one a Flight Sergeant aircrew from the support heli. sqn down the taxiway. I paid them all with hours. I finally got my UK PPL flying a GFT at the Laarbruch club; then I had to sell up (for £4K)and move back to UK. Since then, mortgage and kids have had priority. However, I've now managed to justify an AA-5 which I use to commute from home in Yorkshire to London where I work. How I love looking down on the M25 on a Friday evening....

Greetings all. I have been powered flying since 1973 when I was a spotty faced Air Cadet. Subsequently got the Glider Licence, and later on the PPL. Have flown varying types from C150/s Pipers (singles and twins) Chipmunks,Bulldogs, Fireflies, and some other odd types such as a Varga (In the US) and The PZL Wilga. Currently operate out of Shoreham. About 250 Hours. Work for The World's Favourite Airline at LHR. Wish I could commute by AA5. Dont think I could afford the LHR Landing Fees and Nav Charges!

Ok then,

Obtained my PPL (finally) in '94 via RAF Brize Norton Flying Club and European Flyers
at Blackbushe (with a break in the middle).

Now flying Archers with Wycombe Air Centre. Have only now got around to doing IMC (mid-course at present and enjoying it), but have approx 200hrs TT.

Always wanted to learn to fly, and love to fly in just about anything I am offered.

In another life as an RAF Reservist (RAuxAF),
I also get to fly as pax in mil types - Herc,
VC10, Tri*, Chinook, Wessex amongst others
(would have joined when I was 18, but I am
colourblind!)

Started learning to fly in late 1997 after an inheritance meant I could finally afford it. Some crap instruction at a crucial stage meant I totally lost my confidence and it took me nearly 90 hours to get my PPL. Just over a year and lots of cross country flying later I went for a trial helicopter lesson, just for something different to do, with no intention of taking it up. I said to friends at the time: "Isn't it lucky it's so expensive; it means even an addictive personality like me won't consider it". Oh dear! Nine months and nearly 60 flying hours later, in June this year, I got my PPL(H). I'm presently thinking of doing a CPL(H) with a view to some part time instructing, but thinking maybe doing all the exams just isn't worth the hassle and I'll just fly for fun, and trying to work out how I can possibly afford to keep two licences current. And having lots of fun while I work it all out.

Cool

First lesson was a trial flight for my birthday (March 17th 98)... and was probably the worst money my (ex!) husband ever spent! Got my licence August '98, and now have around 150hrs with IMC and Night ratings. Would love to get a commercial licence and (initially) instruct... but unfortunately can't afford it at the moment ... so for the time being will have to make do with just reading the ATPL study books, and WISHING! But I'm damn well going to find the money SOMEHOW!!!

But I'm totally obsessed with flying and will try anything once (mountain flying, seaplanes, gliding, aeros, and a couple of lessons in an R22 to date). And I'm off to Macon next weekend, on my first continental trip!

BTW... thanks to all you great Maersk and Monarch guys who've taken me on jumpseat rides... and just made my obsession with commercial flying even worse!!!

Just joined today after lurking for a while.
I love to chat in Cyberspace about flying.
I fly around in a group owned Pup 150 out of Gamston... GAXNS... say hello if you spot me or one of the others.
I was at Shoreham and Rochester last weekend, intending to go somewhere tomorrow... not sure where though... any ideas?

What the hell.........

Split up with long term girlfriend and went on 3 year drinking & partying binge….(Its ok I was only 20, so its pretty normal at that age!!)
I then decided one day that though I was having a lot of fun I was wasting my life away so I stopped going out partying and decided to achieve my life long ambition of gaining my pilots licence instead.
I gained my PPL about 2 yars ago at Moray Flying club based at RAF Kinloss during which time I was also a civilian instructor for Air Cadets VGS unit on the Grob 109B .
I then converted onto the PA28 and did a night rating shortly after but I unfortunately had to leave the VGS due to work demands and so I bought a share in a C172 closer to my home in Aberdeen.

I now have about 140hrs TT and am studying ATPL's on OATS correspondence course whilst trying to hold down a job and save like mad.

I will shortly be giving up work though to concentrate on studying full time and hope to commence CPL/IR flight training early next year.

Not very exciting but now you know.......

Regards

UA

I got the bug at 13 yr's 9 months (to the day) with my first ATC Chippie flight. Became an AEF staff cadet and ended up with about forty hours dual.

Then I joined the UAS and completed the syllabus getting another 122hrs under my belt.

A fantastic career beckoned but unfortunately the eyes weren't good enough.

That was five years ago and having blown my degree (see 122hrs above!) I finally earn enough to start flying again.

I'm about to sit the written exams and apparently because of the hours I have I only have to do the X-country nav and handling test (Yes I know I need to get my hand back in first) so I should be airbourne again very soon.

Hurrah.

Well, unlike most of you guys, I'm a real rookie when it comes to flying. I'm learning at Weston, Dublin, and have only had four lessons to date, but am trying to find a bit more time to clock up the hours.

Good idea, this forum. Interesting to hear from others a bit nearer my level.

Cool

Just completed JAR-PPL at Fife (Glenrothes) after about 18 months and 68 hours. Not the best way, but the best I could organise around life/wife/weather/PA-28 availability and so on. Glad to have got here - looking forward to a decent jolly real soon. Any suggestions?

At last its good to see a section for us Private guys.

I fly a Rallye 880 out of Rochester (UK) and am working with a whole heap of other people down here to save the Airport from the grip of the local greedy council who want a new industrial estate on our beautiful runways

Come down and fly-in one day and meet us in Rochester.

Hi Mach.80

Just starting out myself as well. Learning at Barton and currently have 10 hours. Hoping to go solo in next few weeks as soon as I've done the Air Law.

Does anyone else use "professional flying" to fund their private and more important flying?.

I get paid to fly a 737 but spend all the money earned on private flying. I regularly fly a Currie Wot, Kitfox, Motor Tutor and Luton Minor. Its real flying with no hassle.

Luckily I have to instruct on C150, C172, Pa34 and C185 to make ends meet!

Give me a single engine taildragger any day!
