Anyone actually been down to Sandtoft since the change of ownership? If so is it running as normal?

It appears business as usual on the airfield with a much better atmosphere. Don't know the new guy but I'm told he is enthusiastic. The same staff appear to be operating as normal and I'm told Ray Price has returned to the post of C.F.I. There are lots of enthusiastic old members and if their good will can be tapped the place should soon be back on a sound footing. Its always very sad when people lose their hard earned cash, but it has been taken and it has gone somewhere......

Not met the new guy yet but there is a meet & greet on Friday at 19.30 hrs for anyone who's a member to attend, I can't go as i work nights & can't get the night off.

52nd Street Aviation

Just a question about 52nd Street Aviation.

Is there some association between Eastern Airways & 52nd Street Aviation ?

I ask because I saw 2 brand new high viz vests being worn over the weekend, both sporting Eastern Airways on the back ?

Could be pure coincidence, any ideas ?

Now Ray Price is at the helm with a decent owner behind him, this little airfield should flourish in the air and socially in the bar!

What's needed at any decent school is an enviroment, that is condusive to learning for the students, and a non political CFI/Instructor heirachy that are in it for the flying, not some silly rank/position or title on a "committee".

This makes private hire a complete experience as opposed to trying to avoid the miserable git on the desk etc just to get out for an hour or two.

Get down there and fly before it's turned into yet another housing estate

Whoop, Whoop: The answer to your question is 100% no, absolutely no association with Eastern Airways. There is a few Eastern Airways pilots who are members, or at least I've met fairly frequently at the club.

tonker, with regards getting things together. Number one it would be nice to see the aircraft cleaned occasionally, secondly would be nice to see them all refueled in a morning when the weather is nice and planes are booked out and thirdly a few fly ins, late nights and BBQ events would be good. I agree, lets give the new guy a chance.

Apparently memberships will be honored and the new owner/invester has injected a little capital to ensure that aircraft are available, as is fuel.

Also on a side note, if anyone is interested, I have been advised that I will be able to get back my outstanding balance via my credit card company, I called them quoting Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act and they have sent a form to return with evidence of the outstanding amount and after an investigation will most likely credit the amount back to me.

Non Flying Social Members

Would someone enquire if the new owner would consider accepting non flying "Social" Membership of the Club ?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a 'Social Membership' or even if you would ever need one.

The membership fees that were paid to Sheffield City Flying School used to cover insurance, mainly. As far as I can remember they wasn't any other real social engagements that took place, and you didn't need to be a member to eat or drink in the cafe.

Thanks "The Heff"

The club is missing a trick in that case.

By "Social Member" I meant anyone that wishes to be welcome to the club events but is not (for whatever the reason) a flyer.

I don't think anyone attending for a cuppa or a lunch would object to being asked to pay a "day membership" of say £2 in order to use the cafe or facilities. At the end of the year the extra income could easily pay for a christmas dinner for all the paid up members.

I truly hope that the Flying School does go on to prosper under the new management. The staff are always really friendly & deserve some stability.

I had a good moan to Ray Price today (Tues) about the aircraft issues. So far he has taken G-BWEU(152) over to engineering for a leaking fuel drain and running rich,G-BAZS(150) has been over and had the nose wheel oleo fixed and he is taking G-BAEO (172) over tomorrow (Wed)for a brake problem, so its ready for the weekend. At last someone is striving to get the fleet up to spec and not before time. He has agreed with the fire crew that all aircraft, wherever possible should be fuelled at the end of the day. If you have any specific issues speak to Ray as he seems very keen to sort things out. I hope the "curry night" on Friday is the start of many social events to come. Birdman

Completely agree that a 'Social Membership' is an excellent idea, it works well at Sherburn and Sandtoft does get it's fair share of non-flying visitors watching the activities.

Also excellent to hear that long standing issues will be rectified. May mean that the tech logs will be read and resolved.

Lets see what happens...

But wouldn't having to get a "social membership" put off casual visitors? Surely it's good to encourage non-flying people to drop in to the cafe without obligation, as they might then book a trial flight and even go on to PPL training?

I tend to agree with this as the cafe has a good customer base for the Sunday dinners it does also most of the visitors I've seen there are watching someone who they've come with that's Flying or having a trial flight.

My thanks to the above contributors, I hope I can live up to their expectations. I was pleased to be asked to take up the post of CFI again and will endeavour to get the best flying rates for the membership and I am currently working to get all the snags sorted on the aircraft. Most of them are leased from the same source with whom I have an excellent working relationship, so we will be getting the problems sorted as fast as possible.I took G-BWEU over Tues to have a small fuel leak repaired. This required the tank out and specialist welding and should be back soon.G-BAZS has had the nose wheel oleo sorted and is back on line. (Did some of my PPL in BAZ in 1988, though I was only 5 years old. Why is my nose growing?) Other issues are ongoing and in hand. So if you have an issue put it in the tech log and lets get a fleet we can be satisfied with. As far as the food side is concerned, I think it is excellent and good value. However I think the tea and coffee prices need a review. Come on guys if we all pull together we can have a club to be proud of if we all do our bit to help. Get down Friday and lets have a good night. Ray

I also agree that paying a daily "membership fee" would effectively kill the cafe, because no-one in their right minds would part with a couple of quid just for the right to buy a cup of tea and a ham sandwich no matter how good it is; and that's before we touch upon the subject of paperwork.

Although, maybe a "Friends of Sandtoft" sort of thing could be beneficial, encouraging non-flying, enthusiastic parties to donate something to General Aviation, and as a reward are invited and welcomed at local social events, fly-ins, sort of thing. Of course that would all hinge though on whether Ray or Shaun are enthusiastic about the concept of hosting club dinners and fly-ins.

I'll mention the subject for you if no-one else pips me to the post.

Welcome to the forum RAY (Mondo)

I am in agreement with the idea of having fly in's & BBQ's or organised Dinners where the members can get together & meet every now & again as it would create a good atmosphere at the club.

Well done Ray for taking the club by the horns & getting some of the aircraft fixed at last.

Keep up the good work you have my full support.

If you want the club brightening up with some of my photo's of the club fleet just ask & i will bring some down to adorn the walls.

See Ya Friday night.

52nd Street Aviation took over from Sheffield City Flying School at Sandtoft. The lease owner is Shaun Collins who has another business in the music world which has 52nd Street in its name. He is probably best known as the owner of G-CDMX, one of the PA28's we have for hire. Ray

Good luck Ray.

You have good facilities, good staff and good food. With clean, working and refuelled aircraft we'll be a step further.
Would also be a nice touch to see the members newsletter again, and I think it might be worth sending out some info to expired memberships who might come back now things are picking up!
