Just common sense applied to the appropriate situation.
Thats it, just like everyone does on the roads

Gloucester's policy (as specified in it's Aerodrome Manual) is 'Aerodrome Operating Staff' MUST wear hi viz airside and aircrew are 'advised' to. AIP in the process of being amended to reflect this.

A big dollop of common sense being applied...

Out of curiosity, what we would happen if you turned up to one of these airfields without such a garment (and declined to buy one if the airfield operators tried to insist)? Can't you 'just say no'?

Yes, and so can the airport authorities. Meaning they escort you off the premises (or at least landside) and you don't get to fly from there.

Reminds me of an anecdote I had about a year ago. I was passenger on a commercial flight, got all my stuff out of my pockets, went through the metal detector and still the device did "beep". So the nice gentlemen came up to me and asked me "Can I search you sir, please"? He looked like a genuinely nice bloke in good spirits so just out of curiosity I asked "Well, what if I say no". His immediate response, delivered with a genuine smile: "Well, you don't have to fly today sir, as far as I'm concerned." So I spread my arms and told him to go ahead.

Let's face it. We might not like their rules, but it's their airport.

Perhaps a campaign to offer discounted landing fees for those who arrive with hi-vis jackets on?

Or perhaps you'll realise the facts - if you don't come, no one will miss you.

Why is everybody getting so uptight about wearing a high vis vest for? What harm can it do to wear one? its not like they are expensive at £1.99 + VAT

Mrs p and I enjoy visiting new airfields and then exploring the local area on foot. One of the reasons I object to "having" to wear one is that we then have to carry the stupid things around with us.

+VAT
Why are Hi-viz plus VAT? I thought mandatory safety clothing (eg, boots, hard hats) is VAT exempt?

About those yellow Hi-Viz jackets... (how pretty they are )

They are mandatory in some countries. I remember in Spain, they did not let us go out of the airplane, and we had to wait seated, until they bring one for the pilot in command.

In France it is slowly coming too... we were advised in Cannes to bring one next time.

So as I love travelling, I decided to let some of these jackets in the airplane, and always 2 folded in my pilot case.

Hi viz vests

I fly out of Teesside. Oh sorry Durham Tees Vally!! and you can't go airside without one on. When you think about it though, if it saves the life of just one person I knew then I'd sleep with mine on if they wanted me to.

I think that's the whole point mme, we are finding great difficulty in finding the name of the person whos life was saved by one. Do you know him/her?

I think hi-viz jackets are a very sensible idea, it may just save someone's life by helping pilots see people not paying attention while walking on the movement area. In fact I have just written a letter to the DofT and CAA suggesting not only this be made mandatory but also recommending some form of permanent security at the busier GA fields such as White Waltham, Kemble, Barton, Popham etc. Not only will this create jobs but it will also make GA far safer than it is at present, it could be anyone the vicinity of aircraft and without an airside pass system. You can't be too sure! Trained security staff at GA fields would solve this, we need to move with the times!

I have been flying for 55 years and in so many countries I can't even remember them.

I have never seen nor heard of anyone being run down by an airplane or any other vehicle on an airport.

So the safety risk is less by far than crossing a busy street and you don't need a hi vis vest for that.

But if some of you feel more secure having some ****** forcing you to wear one have at it.

It would need to be hi vis food or they wouldn't see it.

eharding, this is a very serious subject! Please don't belittle the highly proffesional work undertaken by those at the forefront of the fight against terrorism or those, who, in the face of ridicule by many such as yourself are only striving to provide a safer environment for you! They are highly trained..... you have to fill out a ten point questionaire, attend an interview..... on time, have been resident in the UK for more than 2 years and then attend an intensive 2 week course in hi viz enforcement and Al Qaeda sleeper cell recognition. Why on earth would you mock this? You should be ashamed of yourself!
