lol
pmsl at this one
yes its the the h and s world gone mad but regretfully we will be soon be told that its law to wear a helmet when cycling too on the roads and no doubt have to wear a high viz as law too...that'll be fun cycling to the beach

as for the airfields and airside, ops staff and aircrew, well now i guess as the ramps are so busy now and like race tracks at big airports then i guess hi viz may make sense but history shows that there are not many accidents that would have been prevented by wearing one in the past...
wearing hi viz wouldnt have stopped being sucked in or chopped up eh?

One of the reasons I object to "having" to wear one is that we then have to carry the stupid things around with us.
Eh? We're talking about the vests, right? Not the huge yellow winter coats that the police, etc. wear?

Mine folds down to about the same size as my licence/logbook. What's the issue with that?

Chelsea chelse

Chelsea loved their high-vis vests so much they even adopted them as their away strip. Here you can see three of their players getting ready for a night departure in a PA28

It's a big deal as they are made of flammable plastic and the chances of a cockpit fire are higher than those of you walking into a dirty great aeroplane making a thundering racket.

However, with the advent of ipods it might be the taxying pilots who have to see and avoid.

...and your logbook provides about as much protection as your yellow bit of nylon - do you seriously take it flying with you? (your logbook, I mean.)

People are practically stoned for wearing hi-vis at EGNX. Well in the GA side anyway.

In reply to James747 about why people object, it's because if these idiots are allowed to prosper, you end up with:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/7227897.stm

H&S is great when it's keeping us whole and healthy in factories, mines and other genuinely dangerous places (wet, foggy aprons at night for example) but big open spaces with a handful of snmall aeroplanes, no.

In fact, the real H&S types seem to be quite frustrated by the buffoons as well:

This reminds me of a story I read last year in the Times that told of 300 very dissapointed primary school childeren located somewhere in Wiltshire who were told that for Bonfire night a real fire was banned by the council's health and safety department. Instead they had 3 projectors placed in a triangle showing a video of flames and underneath that a load of infrared outdoor heaters..........I'd be gutted if I was one of those kids, where's the fun in that? About as much fun as walking around an historic old English airfield with a dayglo forcefield on!

A very good article by James May on the subject of Hi-Viz in the Telegraph this week.

The article can be found here.

FWIW, sometimes the hi-viz stuff might be necessary because some of the arguments against them fail.

For example, it's recently been made mandatory to wear ear defenders in some places on a ramp I sometimes have to visit. It's not that it's particularly noisy but i suppose rules are rules. But it means that you can' tell where the noise is coming from very easily and so you might not be so aware of that prop coming at you. Perhaps we need a man with a flag walking in front of the aircraft......

That would be discriminating against women, trans gendered and transvestites and those we can't quite figure out what they are.

Can we add EGBE Coventry to the list please? Also EGNX EMA.

Halfpenny Green - well it is mandatory but the place is often so quiet many seem not to care. The occasional memo gets sent out bemoaning the fact people are ignoring the rules.

Only because I tend to take my whole pilot case with me - it's easier than sorting things out!

Let's be clear here. No item of clothing is going to prevent you from walking in to a spinning propeller, of course. However, it might just prevent the propeller from walking in to you (if you see what I mean...)

For the record, I'm in the "I carry one, just in case; tend not to wear it; but really don't see what the big deal is if someone asks me to because there are far more important things in my life" camp.

Well thought out Spitoon, "but it means that you can' tell where the noise is coming from very easily and so you might not be so aware of that prop coming at you. "
Now of course if you're wearing ear defenders and a hi-vis jacket there's no problem.

Don't worry, any self respecting kid would lose such a thing immediately. They don't have to try hard to lose things anyway judging by the number of jumpers, shirts, shoes and even the occasional trousers I see in the school lost property box when trying to find evertthing my 10 year old has lost.

I am trying to bring him up with the adages "that rules are for the guidance of the wise and the blind obedience of fools"; "that if not duffers won't drown and if duffers deserve drowned" and; that it is an aeroplane. Also that a propeller will kill him so stay away!

Ever noticed how the people who rail against health and safety the most, always have the best accidents..........

I guess I had better go have my first accident to support that idea.

Flipping Health and Safety

Just got back from Mallorca, I hired a R44 from Sloane and horrors H&S has now reached Son Bonet.

They have never ever had an accident with anyone walking into an Aircfraft airside since the Airport was built in the 1920's but after a suggestiion from a CAA jobsworth on a visit they now enforce this stupid rule:
