Flying holidays in the USA

Can anyone reccomend any schools or rental companies, in Florida or other eastern states of the USA, that will rent an aircraft (4 seater) for up to two weeks.

Also for those who have ventured out there for this reason, are there any reccomended routes, or particular points of interest that should be visited, again around the Eastern/ Central states. Perhaps there is some literature on this?

Cheers

I would recommend doing a google search for a place to rent from in floridia, i know just about every major airport up north here rents out basic four seater training aircraft. You might however, have to make some sort of pre arrangement with the airport to rent for an extended period of time.

As for points of intrest in the eastern/mid USA? if you're going to be flying from flordia, be sure to go to Key West, or Daytona Beach, and if you're into theme parks, visit Disney World. (is it world in flordia)?

Going further up north, there's this cool place right on the border between South Carolina and North Carolina called South Of The Border, its a neat little place to stay overnight. Of course, if you're going further up north, Washington Dc would be a nice place to visit, and still further up north you could come visit my hometown of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Thats all i can think of at the moment, ive never really been away from the east coast so i wouldn't know about out west.

Safe flying 2 all

Recommending places to visit really depends on whether this is a flying vacation with your family, or just several friends. Once you start getting north of the Carolinas you run into some fairly dense traffic areas, Military operations areas, bases, etc.

Depending on what type of vacation, and when, there is the Sun and Fun EAA fly in held every spring in Florida, Key West, Orlando, Miami, Myrtle Beach, New Orleans, the options are limitless.

If your vacation is in July, there is the EAA Air Venture fly in held at Oshkosh Wisconsin. The most awesome gathering of aircraft in the world, on average there are over 12,000 - 14,000 aircraft of all types (GA, experimental, homebuilts, ulta lights, military, and some corporate) parked on the airport during the event. If you love aviation then this is the event to visit!

And you need to decide whether you want new shiny airplanes with GPS and gismos or just a well worn basic PA28 the price does reflect!

Yes, what do you need?
A beaten up 10.000hr warrior or something a few years old with all the bells and whistles?
Keep in mind a lot of places will have trouble fitting your schedule around inspections.
Airplanes for hire/instruction in the US are required to have 100hr inspections. Basically this means the maintenance schedule has to agree with yours since nobody will do a 100 hr prematurely to accomodate you. It will cost them too much money.
Most places require a day minimum ( from 2 hrs to 4 hrs) for multi day rental, so make sure you will actually fly those hours.
So no trip to New Orleans and stay 5 days with no revenue for the rental place.
You can off course plan around this, if you fly 8 hrs on day one you can spend 2 days bumming around somewhere before you fly another 8 hr on day 4.
PM me for some places to rent from, either the tired work-horse or the fancy one...

Almost forgot, New orleans (Lakefront NOT International)
Memphis and the home of Country music..Nashville.

Savannah is worth stopping in at - the old part of the town is very pretty, especialy in the spring, and there's a guy on the field with not 1 but FIVE Mustangs! They are always polished thoroughly after each flight.... I gather that Charleston is even nicer than Savannah.

If you get to the Richmond/Williamsburg area, Colonial Williamsburg is well worth a visit, and Williamsburg airport is within 10 minutes drive. If you are that far north, you might as well continue on to the new NASM building at Dulles, tho' I think you'll have to leave your plane behind for that part

Further south, Key West is fun for a couple of nights if you don't mind having a drink or 10...

If you go to Memphis, stop in at the BB King bar, and if you time it right, you could visit the Memphis Belle at her restoration sight. If you are getting that far inland, the Staggerwing Museum at Tullahoma, TN is well worth a visit.

Suffolk Airport, VA is the home of the Fighter Factory, who have a nice selection of aircraft.

I think 100hr is only required if you're receiving instruction. If you're hiring then it is not required, so the aircraft can go beyond the 100hr check. (Something along those lines, I seem to have mislaid my FAR/AIM)....

EA

PS I'd go for an all singing, all dancing new aircraft. $100 per hour will get a C172SP, 180HP fuel injected, GPS equipped, leather seats etc etc....Thats £40-£50/hr less that I'd pay for a 70's Warrior in the UK....
