Yes Pinky I know Kerau but I thought I might not just leap in and answer it in the first 5 minutes...perhaps someone else wanted to.

The next down is indeed Kairik/Porgera. The original Porgera strip was lots more fun:ok:

Indeed , was the Caribou "boi haus" still there in your day Chucks?

My log say I was checked into Porgera in July 1970 by Frank "Daphne" Johnston

Where did he get to?

The wonderful PNG plod sold all their kit to the raskols right?
Nope Tinpis, Not this time anyway. And mustard gets the cigar. Kerau it was.

What happened with the resupply op was that the evening before the flight the Boss, Richard Rowe (may he rest in peace) gave me a briefing for the flight. Upon arriving overhead Kerau I was to do two full circuits and then only land if I felt it was safe to do so. After landing I was to immediately backtrack to the T/O threshold, line up and keep the engines running until a Police Officer showed up. If a raskol appeared I was to 'amscray' pronto!! I was reasonably light and a light morning breeze was in the right direction so a take off uphill was no problem.

All appeared ok when I arrived so I landed, backtracked etc and waited, engined running. And after about 10 minutes (!) a member of the PNG Constabulary arrived toting a worn looking AR15, the semi auto version of the full auto M16 Assault Rifle, and I shut down. He did not appear to be a 'happy chappy' and after exchanging greetings I said as such to him. The conversation then went something like this;

PNG PO; ''Oh Mr Captain, I am so ashamed!''

Me; (Somewhat bemused) ''Oh really?''

PNG PO; ''Yes Mr Captain. I am so ashamed!''

As we unloaded the food and ammo the conversation continued along these lines until;

Me; ''Well, what is the problem? Maybe I can help''

PNG PO ''Well Mr Captain, yesterday my men and I came across some of the raskols we were seeking. I called out for them to stop and when they did'nt I aimed at one and fired two shots at him.''

Me; (anticipating the worst) ''You fired twice at him. And????''

PNG PO; I missed! I am so ashamed!!''

At this point I bit down hard on my tongue and tried desperately to keep a straight face. I think I failed. Dismally!!

I attempted to console him, saying that whilst my knowlege of the AR15 was limited I did know that it was not necessarily the most accurate of firearms and asked if I could inspect it. It was in fact a well worn and used heap of **** and one would have been lucky to hit a 'bull's arse at ten paces' with it.
Upon hearing that he seemed to cheer up a bit.

I then loaded what little there was to return to Moresby, bid him farewell and took off for the return flight.

Jeez, I miss that place and those times!!:{:{:{:{

Petropavlovsk

fl610

Yes, it is Petropavlovsk, we used to use it to refuel on the way to Nome, Anchorage and Vancouver.

I thought it was a spectacular airport, with the 11000 ft volcano about 4 nm from the aerodrome reference point. In any sort of weather it made sure that the ILS needles were kept where they should be.

There was also a 17000ft volcano up the track from Petropavlovsk towards Nome, with a few aircraft wrecks on the slopes.

Mother Nature at its best, I enjoyed my time in the area
