Funny you should single out NZRO. I have had the WORST service from a controller there, was some 2 or 3 months ago. The most uninterested, pre-occupied, unhelpful controller ever to grace the frequencies. I suppose my timing could have been a little better. I think I caught him when he was watching Coronation St on the television or maybe between his nap. Sounds like the old boy needed it.

Got to be careful sending students to Rotorua - I think it's just because RO controllers go "by the book" more than other regional airports. Probably not a bad thing all in all, as it keeps students on their toes. (Students & everyone else, come to think of it.)
It's a shame though that making mistakes has different consequences in RO than in TG, HN, NR, etc.

Gen R/T not only NZRO
Yes floks , not only RO , even the Pilots say stupid things on the radio, once I heard female student said ' at this momant ' and a another cowboy said over the radio' where were u earlier ' which was totaly unnessasary ., it shows the pofessionalism in NZ R/T, have heard few stupid R/t at Ardmore too,,,is this the way these guys fly ,,, abosorbed,,,R/t should be bound by the ICAO system is the system laid down by the ICAO ....
If the pilots want to make stupid comments on theradio then why not ask them to comedown and have a chat rather than tranmitting over the radio, just to show that thye are smart A****s ,,,

Ahhhh Rotorua!!!!
If you make the head controller, repeat her transmissions to you more than once... i.e "Say again?" you get treated to a really great impersonation of Mt Tarawera erupting over the R/T!!!
Go on.. you know you want to... !!! just say "Say again?" could be completely innocent and genuine.. but the results are all the same...
Then there was that day that a student from a certain Ardmore based flying school who had to be vectored onto finals at Rotorua!!!!
so you see.. NZRO ATC do help students out when they need it!!!!!

Being the topic starter we seem to have gotten a bit sidetracked...most unusual for this web page...
Maybe if the R/T from the pilots was as per ICAO then the controllers would/might know what was going on???
Just a thought......
Knowing a bit about the RO scene, I must say I've had no problems with them. Actually like the way they operate.
I see FQQ was at it again bashing all those un-necessary words about the Hawkes Bay region again.

Hi all,
nzer, I have worked at quite a few major international airports in NZ, Middle East and Africa, and at most of those the SID or Radar Departures required the aircraft to automatically call radar when airborne.
CT7, most training IFR flights do give some idea of what they will be doing. However, things seem to change fairly often in the cockpit and hence our request for their intention.
One of my pet hates is the call "estimating the aid at..." that seems to be creaping to phraseology at a local training establishement. We have NDB and VOR, and in our procedural environment the seperation minimas are vastly different. Surely "estimating the VOR at (or NDB at )..." would be more proffesional?
Got to agree with Big Kahuna, to work overseas the use of standard phraseology is very important, as many of those flying (or controlling) have English as a second language and non-standard inferences are often lost to the other party. The results could be devastating.

LL.
I agree!! The airborne bit was actually saying "Airborne".
Ref the position reports just "Hamilton VOR 35" should do?
Re overseas, yup, very standard there, esp when english is not their first language.
Try Scandhoovia for example... huge fun. Mind you, we did get the Swedish controlers saying "Gidday"...

NZ RT
Yes we know the RT has to be reorganised and so does the Air traffic system in NZ>
The instructors should be motivated , why all the people carry on the same mistake , isnt there anybody to correct these RT , what if these people fly overseas they will have a huge problem , seems like these guys will have a huge Prob, I agree stll they use PAT which is the PTA the proper ICAO

I would have to agree with all of you who believe NZ RT is getting worse.
Back to basics people, the reason controllers get all Mad Max on people is generally because of poor radio work (bad read backs and reporting ect).
If you keep it simple the first thing a controller will think is that this guy or girl knows what they are doing and fire an easy clear back at you.
Yeah sure put your bit in occasionally, but remember there is prob someone waiting to talk and their tx could be serious.
