Old blokes who avoid nursing homes and the like

https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/austr...?ocid=msedgntp

I'd say that there is hope, still, for us old blokes who keep trying to convince ourselves that we are still in our 30s. Good on him is my view.

Now, if I can

(a) still be alive at 91

(b) still do things in this vein at 91

then I'll be more than happy.

He doesn't look to be older than 75 in the pix ....

The father of my very great friend, Gerald Varley, purchased his first Porsche on his 85th birthday, a few years ago: https://www.motoring.com.au/his-firs...e-at-85-45823/

He also purchased a Mazda MX5 during last year. Gerald will correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that his father’s ‘toy’ collection now numbers 4?

And isn't all this just absolutely wonderful to see. I have an aunt in her mid-90s, lives at the top of a steep hill, goes swimming several times a week and plays golf as much as she can fit into her program. She is about as fit as I was 20 years ago ...

Not too sure about jumping at an advanced age ... but only because of the increased risk of broken bones.

My Gold Coast Ulysses just celebrated our member Billy the Mayor's 94th birthday.

Still riding and always at the front, even though he stops at every turn to be corner marker then scoots past everyone to be behind the ride leader. Until the next corner!

I hope I'm still riding and Staying Upright into my 90s

Always cringe when I see these PR exercises of old people skydiving. It's all fine as long as long as nothing goes wrong - giving the false impression they love to tout that "anyone can do it". Unfortunately things go wrong in skydiving, and the go wrong quite often. If you're elderly and you have a hard landing or worse, some injuries that may not be
so drastic for a young person can quickly become life altering or death for someone older.

And then the Fun Police turned up...

Perhaps ‘old people’ are competent and capable of understanding the risks and deciding to take them?

Yeah that was kind of my entire point, which seems to have completely passed over you. The way they market skydiving these days as being so inconsequential is not conducive to proper disclosure the average joe understands what they are signing up for.

Right. So the skydiving organisations tell the ‘average [J]oe’ - and little old men and ladies - that there are no risks? Are you sure?

you seem to have a habit of trying to invent things I didn't say.

Good folk, the thread was started in good fun after I saw the report.

Far too many oldies give up too early .. "I can't do this, I can't do that" and so on. My maternal grandmother, who could run rings physically around the bulk of her age group, for years prior to her death at close to 100 only wanted to die ... what a waste of talent and capability. Sure, as we age we run the risk of acquiring this or that nasty ailment and, for some, that does slow us down and remove some options. However, for those who can do, but don't (for whatever reason), one can only hold a great deal of sympathy and empathy along with a regret that so many opportunities to grow old disgracefully are passed by. At least the Ulysses folk grab that mantra by the delicates and run (ride) with it.

If I might be a bit of a bore, might I ask that the thread remain in good humour and, hopefully, elicit tales (true and not-so-true) about the disgraceful goings on of older folk which should be the goal of all of us as we run/ride/wander/stagger/whatever into our dotage ....

There is a bit of an internet meme, that people of previous generations got older far more quickly than people do nowadays... Look at these pics as proof.

I think the point is, that a lot of what we used to think of as old age was just people being told to take it easy, and not push themselves. Yes Sky diving may not be the best if you have fragile bones, but siting on the couch with your pipe and slippers reading pprune may kill you faster.

ASub Coote was the CFI at Grovedale when I learnt to fly then he taught me aerobatics. I rode along with him as passenger in a Decathlon doing aerobatics in his late 80s. He was still instructing at age 90. https://issuu.com/raaus/docs/sport_pilot_74_oct_2017/38

A real inspiration.
