A treadmill, Forky..

Why not go to your local pet recycling centre and buy an active dog? So much more fun to walk than on your treadmill!

Perhaps also a good idea to carry a means to pick up the dog poo?

(P.S. I was in a V35 on Easter Saturday, landing at an aerodrome somewhere. Another V35 followed us in. TYU!)

Is walking 70kms in 18 hours through the night possible?
He was running to find a toilet.

I really don't care if he's Australia's most eminent proctologist, the bit that did it for me was that, regardless of anything else,
he was disappointed that his mobile phone couldn't get reception out there.
Umm...

And of course, the world's media are queued up outside his William Creek hotel room, chequebooks in hand, bidding for access to this hero's exclusive story.
You can just see the headlines now, can't you?

Let's just see if he can't earn a few extra bucks for the live footage of his Diamond getting dropped during the recovery process.
I'll help... film it, that is.

I think he may have been prompted to add that statement.

Some satphones are better than others. The Iridium ones are the best, satellite voice, data and GPS enabled. Also tracking capable.
I second that, there is another product being heavily advertised at the moment that only uses one Satellite!

Why didn’t he make a “PAN” call before landing, and then wait by the aircraft for help? As for leaving the aircraft to walk 70kms feeling ill! He is a very lucky man!

Dick. Well that's fine in theory but the CVR loops generally run for 90 mins or 180 mins and are then wiped over. Also it takes a bit of effort to remove and download the CVR as well, grounding the Aircraft until it can be replaced......

Then you have the legal ramifications of listening to the CVR which would be opposed by the unions...

Too hard to do and by the time it was played probably too late.

It's not that remote out there any more! Someone else will pass by soon enough to help you anyway!
I wouldn't bet on that!

he was disappointed that his mobile phone couldn't get reception out there.
Umm, yes, that's terrible! Something must be done - and soon!
I would hesitate to say that the GAFA will never see full mobile reception, but I also seriously doubt that it will happen for a long time yet. In maybe 40 or so years time...

We will see it eventually, but only when your average mobile phone has the ability to roam on some kind of satellite service (Inmarsat/Iridium etc).

We will never see a terrestrial mobile network cover these areas. Imagine the cost of installing and nightmare of getting power to thousands of remote sites that have zero daily users just in case the occasional douchebag gets stuck without appropriate survival equipment and preparation. Not going to happen.

It's a long way to walk in one night when debilitated by food poisoning!!

IMHO after few attacks of the chucks/squits you have about enough energy left to crawl away to lie down

I had a look at the Adelaide Advertiser's site to see if there was any expansion on the initial report.
Nothing more.
Perhaps our heroic cross-country walker is holding out for a better deal from the Murdoch press for his 'exclusive story'.

I lived in the Upper Gascoyne of WA for several years and we were just as remote and nearly as dry as the Lake Eyre district.

We had no phones, just the RFDS radio network, but we had a few rules:

Tell someone (preferably several people) where you are going, what you are doing, and when you plan to arrive;
Take at least 10 litres water with you (more if travelling in company);
Take energy snacks such as breakfast bars and similar non-perishables;
A couple of boxes of matches, a torch and a roll of toilet paper (to get a fire going);
A thermal blanket for warmth, shade and shelter;
A hat and sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellant and first aid kit;
(A rifle and some ammo);
In the event of problems, stay with the aircraft or vehicle.

The only weight is in the water but you can't survive without it!

The people who died were those who failed to obey those rules or the other one...

Too hot; too slow; too low!!!

It would be full of the guard police telling them off for transmitting on 121.5

And sadly, there's more than a little truth in that statement.

Hey Mr Kaz,

In 'those days',

I used to carry a 'Lions' Christmas cake in the back at ALL times, as well as a foam Esky drink bottle full of water - hopefully it would not break 'on impact'.
(Small 'Chully Bun' type to friends 'Very East'....)

Also had a medical kit put together by RFDS Doc of some fame in WA.

Never had to use either - thankfully.

Worked out of Carnarvon for a while, then Yaleen & out of Hedland, Tom Price etc etc.

Good country if you 'respect it'.

I still carry a 'Lions' Christmas fruit cake 'in the back', no, not the same one....but I reckon it will help me to last about a week.

Cheers

Any comment on no mobile coverage I'd bet is a Trevor plug. No stopping that guy.

It's actually Ms Kaz ...

The drought through the 70s finished us then it rained 30" the year after we left. The cattle were wild and so were some of the locals, especially when there were arguments about brands, earmarks and cleanskins.

Landor Races was the annual big event although one of our governesses came close one year....

A good friend was killed on Minnie Creek chasing cattle in the summer in a C150A. He saw they had crossed a boundary and he tried to hunt them back even though he knew the rules. He was the second owner of that station to die while mustering with a fixed wing.

Thankyou Ms Kaz,

Nice to 'meet you'.

I actually spent a couple of days out at Landor 'mustering' for the man who is no longer with us....and enjoyed the races as well....

Spent a bit of time in 'The Murchison', and then 'The Pilbara', and later, 'The Kimberley'.

Around the '70's'.....

Cheers
