Thanks once more everyone . . . every little bit helps me get my head around how big and comprehensive this OSH thing is!
Jack - it's the dorms for me (this time!) . . . I took a single supplement so no-one else has to suffer the fact I only need a few hours sleep each night! And I am looking forward to the 'night show' as well, thanks XXX
airspace alfa - thanks for the link to the workshops. Now I need to find time to attend most of them AND see the planes, music, Air Museum, seaplane area, manufactures’ tents and, of course, the show itself! Thanks too for the information about the EAA shuttle bus going from Blackhawk common near the university and the International Tent.
Jaba - that was one hell of a storm! I am guessing some aircraft would have flipped over with winds like that? I think I might find a special place to stand/sit if I see dark clouds heading in the direction of OSH.
My ducks are pretty much all in row, including buying some of those little koala bears with flags to hand out!

Just came across some interesting statistics on the EAA site about last year's Oshkosh - in 2012 there were 2,078 registered visitors from 71 countries. Aussies were very well represented in the 'top 10' . . .

Now for a somewhat different perspective on Oshkosh!
Should be on every pilot's bucket-list. You cannot comprehend Oshkosh fully until you have been there.
I was there in 1999 with my brother and two sons in tow. It was amazing but really full-on and in your face.
Highlights: Jimmy Franklin's jet assisted Waco, Oracle, GeeBee, BD5 minijet, warbirds, warbirds, warbirds!
The one I really went to see was Bob Hoover - but actually found his routine boring in the company of those listed above.
I felt the whole time that a prang was inevitable - given the way the envelope was being pushed, and I was constantly alert to the safety of my boys. A Bearcat and Corsair eventually obliged right in front of us!
A number of the feature acts at Oshkosh that year are either dead (Jimmy Franklin) as a result of airshow accidents, crashed (Oracle) or retired for fear of ending up that way (GeeBee, BD5).
I am glad I went, but have no desire to return!

I also saw a guy ‘buy the farm’ at an airshow in California in a VariEze. He apparently was an ex-Navy fighter pilot doing a on/over the limit low-level routine and he asked too much from the aircraft as it simply flipped off a 90 degree angle of bank high ‘g’ turn at about 200' and into the ground in front of thousands of people! Like you, I had felt uncomfortable all day with some of the flying I had seen – like a guy throwing a low level roll in a private warbird jet on final and damned near going off the end of the runway in the process.
But then, I also saw a very young woman at an Oz airshow giving her grandmother a plane ride by taking off down wind, clipping some trees and nosing into the ground with the worst result for both of them.
Hopefully OSH 2013 won’t have any of these dramas . . .

I'll be there all week - doesn't sound like we're going to get too much in the way of Military hardware which is a small shame. Last time I was here in 2011 it was the 100th anniversary of Naval Aviation and the USN put on a great show!
More importantly, where is a good place to have a beer or thirteen near the camp ground?

Yes Ranga, we decided to make the trip again. More for the ****s and giggles of a US road trip than the show at Oshkosh.
Living on camp site again - hopefully some interesting stuff turns up. If its nothing but ultra light after ultra light by Thursday I'm outa here!
You want me to pick you up another RV? Maybe get the half build kit this time!

Oz to Oshkosh 1998 in F33A
Flew my F33A from Moree NSW Australia to Oshkosh in July 1998 via Majuro/Honolulu/Hilo/Santa Barbara, awesome experience, great memories and wish I could do it again. TWR was later sold in USA after visit to Oshkosh.
