I also saw a guy ‘buy the farm’ at an airshow in California in a VariEze. He apparently was an ex-Navy fighter pilot doing a on/over the limit low-level routine and he asked too much from the aircraft as it simply flipped off a 90 degree angle of bank high ‘g’ turn at about 200' and into the ground in front of thousands of people! Like you, I had felt uncomfortable all day with some of the flying I had seen – like a guy throwing a low level roll in a private warbird jet on final and damned near going off the end of the runway in the process.
But then, I also saw a very young woman at an Oz airshow giving her grandmother a plane ride by taking off down wind, clipping some trees and nosing into the ground with the worst result for both of them.
Hopefully OSH 2013 won’t have any of these dramas . . .
