XXX

If you took notice of the commentary as much as you took notice of your eyeballs (can't quite blame you LOL ) One of the walker girls also holds a ppl, and flies during training missions...just lacking the required display approval.

And they are rather "optically pleasant".

They sat behind me and Mrs Jaba, and wannabe Rhino driver Jaba Jnr at a function we were at....

It was pointed out that I was wearing a new Tag Heuer and not a Breitling which is sad as the Tag gains time at an annoying rate.

If only I could have cut a deal with them

A waste of time?

I guess that comes down to your viewpoint of what is important to you.

For me it was a relaxing day away from my workshop (went saturday) staring at and talking aeroplanes.............i see nothing bad there.

I guess a like or dislike starts with you pre-emptive ideas on what you expect to see. I expected more of the same, so wasn't dissapointed. I still managed a few highlights, and if i go with the same or a similar crew again i'll remember to 'get lost' earlier...that was the fastest i have ever been through the exhibition halls! missed a lot i would have normally taken time to look at/listen to/enquire about.

Sunfish might be onto something about GA/home builders tho...maybe if they allowed registration as a trade person for home builders, one could get access on a trade day, and least the stall holders would recognise some credibility as a potential customer.

Food...its crap where most people buy. I missed the last show, but i learnt on the first one, the best food is down the south end.....WAAAAY down the south end. Better quality, shorter lines, and actually more variety. Got myself the seafood pack for $8, was very good. Fish, chips, a scallop, 2 calamari rings and a short crab stick. Gave the scallop and calamari away...i don't eat bait... Rest was good.

Raptor was good
Caribou!!! wow, the speed HARS got a display approval on it has me dumbfounded....there IS someone in the regulator with a brain.
B-52 on the ground! FECKING GOLD...had to touch it!
Our own C-17's on the ground for a change...grand!

Lowlight....The c-27 Spartan. Would have liked to seen it fly, but they couldn't have sent a worse example. Spent some time talking to the french crew. I made a comment about being possibly being the worst example flying. Crew was like no no no best one squadron owns, the other didn't make it. ROFL! Squadron was supposedly leaving the mid east back to france, and two were diverted to come here. The one as displayed, was delivered new to the squadron in the mid east and has just over 11k hours on it with no refurb done. Credit to the frogs for flying it here.

Highlight.
The comment of a small boy. 4-5 years old...6 MAX!
C-17 gets airborne, banks away from the crowd.
and i quote!

"dad thats humungous!, much bigger than yours"
Guy looks at me and blushes...he owns an archer LOL

I'd go again.

YAVE marshalling...at least they have learnt to move away from propellors and stand where you can actually see them. That was a defo improvement.

Jas,

Points probably a couple of people are trying to make:

I bought a ticket to OSH, you go to a gate, pick it up, you're in.

I got a comp trade day ticket, you register on line, print the PDF, take it to a dood who scans it, issues another ticket, bag is x-rayed. Big difference, no scanning or x-raying at OSH. Pick ticket up, in.

There is no d!ckhead on the gates at OSH to prevent you getting in early like Bas experienced. I'd get up early, stroll on in, have a coffee & stroll around.

I couldn't get within 400 metres of the Raptor at AV. There were absolutely NO barricades around ANY acft at OSH, all 10,000 of them.

At OSH, GA, Experimental etc are treated like gold, anyone who's been there will confirm that. The Lycoming presence was brilliant, informative & had loads of free technical seminars. They all did. The seminars, lots that you could pay for, lots free, well, if you lined them all up, 40 hours a week back to front would take you a few years to see.

I'm merely pointing a segment of a market being ignored, that could contribute hugely to their bottom line.

And I'm also pointing out the stupid bullish!t that Australians are subject to on the security front. My bag was x-rayed but I wasn't. I could have taken knives in my pockets in. Why? They don't do it at OSH and there is NO trouble there.

Well, I took 2800 photos and a bit of video, unfortunately I was holding the camera... A few of my better results:

Single Rhino display returning:

Stix landing pass:

Raptor creating some vortices

Avalon is Military, corporate, and related industries.
I hear numbers keep going down. Involving GA might well be their saviour!

(And do a whole lot for GA by having a proper trade show in a major population centre)

Glad you all enjoyed it. I'm almost finished my rear fuselage. Now to find someone to sell me an ELT preferably off the shelf. The Dynon ADHARS clears customs today.

You cannot compare OSH with Avalon, you are trying to compare apples and oranges. Look at the size and aviation resources of the USA and compare them with Australia, look at the geographical location of Australia, it is a major logistical effort to get people here. Avalon is not a GA show but there is a large amount of space given over to GA.

It is up to the various GA organisations to get together and organise a major GA expo. Can you GA guys see that happening?

Fixed ELTs have a failure rate so high they are a waste of money. Just get a 406 GPS PLB and be done with.

It was my first Avalon visit. Along with the flight director I took a package deal flying to / from ADL for Friday afternoon and all of Saturday up to 4:30 when it was time to bus back to MEL. It included a Gold Pass, which seemed only to give access to the stand area and a few goodies - hat, program, lanyard etc. I wouldn't bother to get one next time.

We enjoyed all aspects of the show, some very much so. It's hard to pick the high point there were several candidates. Disappointed that the Spitfire and Mustang couldn't fly on Saturday due to cross winds, but that's OK, we understand, and we'll catch up at Temora some time.

It was well organised in all aspects - given the uncertainties which plague events of this magnitude, and the huge force of volunteers did their jobs well and courteously. The aircraft displays speak for themselves. All good, some mind blowing.

I have to say that the American commentary on some parts of the show was "grating". No offense yous guys, I know that's how you do it back home, but it can be too much in other countries and that how we perceived it. Just tell us what's happening without all the B/S.

From a photographic aspect, Avalon suffers in the same way that Temora does. The afternoon program takes place into the sun so it's difficult to capture detail on the aircraft in the same way as in the morning display. Nothing can be done about this but I was envious of the CFA blokes (were you one of them Buster?) out on the western side after about 1300.

I've ticked the Avalon box for now. I might come back if health and advancing years permit, but I'm in no rush. It was good, and we vote 4+ stars.

parabellum, only an imbecile would compare OSH to AV

I'm comparing the ATTITUDE.

Why is there ridiculous, invasive security @ AV & not @ OSH?

Why the ridiculous ticketing process @ AV & not @ OSH?

Why can't I kick the tyres on the F18 @ AV but can @ OSH?

Why isn't there any event in Australia that I can see a full mock up of the G3X & Garmin suite of avionics in full working mode. Powered up, working. I can push any button and play with all the dials. Can @ OSH. Guess what? I bought $40,000 of Garmin avionics based on what I saw @ OSH.

Really?
Why is there ridiculous, invasive security @ AV & not @ OSH?
I think someone poked their head into my bag, that's the only security I recall. Hardly invasive.
Why the ridiculous ticketing process @ AV & not @ OSH?
??? Seriously, I ordered mine online a few weeks ago, could hardly have been easier. I will grant you that it's far too expensive. If it was $20 odd cheaper I would have gone more than just the one day.
Why can't I kick the tyres on the F18 @ AV but can @ OSH?
Ok so you couldn't get too close to the F-18s, but did you miss the C-130, C235, B-52, C-17, Connie, Catalina, PC-9....and many more.

I went for the Friday trade day then met my bro and nephews (6yo and 4yo) for the evening event. Kids loved it and I thought it was bloody excellent. There will always be minor issues, Jetstar arrivals stuffed up the flow a bit.

Remember it's not a GA show, that's what AUSFLY is for, get behind it. If you want Warbirds get to Warbirds Downunder (bloody brilliant by the way!), Omaka or Wanaka.

This is exactly what we are trying to achieve with Aviatex at YWOL in May. And everyone that we talk to agrees it is a much needed event for GA and RA. But to put on an event like this is expensive and it is very hard to get operators to commit.

We all agree that the industry needs this, but without the support of the industry it's a hard one to get off the ground.

Aviatex is going to be a three day trade expo that will be held in conjunction with Wings Over Illawarra and we have had some good support from a few! Cirrus, Heliflite, Aust LightWing, Gipps Aero and Brumby are just some that have commited to take part in the trade expo.

AOPA and SAAA are both on board. yet to have offical discussions with RAAUS, but initial inducation are pretty positive.

We are working hard and are very committed to making this a very successful event for both exhibitors and visitors and to ensure that this becomes an anticipated event on the aviation calendar, but it will not happen without the industry's support.

Par for the course unfortunately - I can't say that I've ever heard a positive word out of Sunfish's mouth (keys?) about anything here unless he was backing up someone else who was also having a moan...
