I am in the market of buying either a aviation GPS or an ipad mini. Obviously can't afford both atm.

Anyone had any problems with reliability? I mean I will always have my WACs and all.

Or recommend a GPS approx 500 bucks?
Hi Deadcut. External iPad GPS units are exceptionally accurate now and can give you a great position for whichever of the two indigenous air navigation apps in Australia you use.

Some units use just the US GPS Network whilst others use both the US GPS network and the Russian GLONASS system.

It's always best that you review the pricing of the units and your circumstances. You can check out various iPad GPS Unit options here.

I hope it's not an issue, because I might be in a wee bit of trouble with my latest project!

Ozrunways 4.0

Thanks for the update, looks great. Just wondering how you can turn the reminders off that come up such as change fuel tank and the alerts letting you know the new area frequency? Pretty annoying!

Has anyone had the runways overlay working? Turned it on and nothing happened. Do you need to be airborne?

Go into Map View Options and turn on "Show runways".

Only works for destinations on your flight plan.

Just uploaded the latest version. Wow. I have plates, AIP for NZ, Ireland, Phillipines, Belgium and a few others. Will come in very handy if I have to divert from Essendon and request direct to Brussels.

Is this now a standard feature, or just a limited time teaser.....cause the the overseas info is not much (operational)use to me, but great to pass the time with when stuck in a waiting room etc.

I agree with ozgrade. Is there anyway to just have the Australian airfields?
Cheers

Top right hand corner near the dictionary icon, you'll see either a letter or the word "All" just to the left. Click on it and choose your selected country!

I was mucking around with ozrunways and had UDA (Ulladulla) in my flight plan. I was cleared direct so went into the plan menu and hit direct to and it showed a waypoint 5500nm away. However in the plan it definitely shows the correct waypoint. Any ideas? I believe it's a VOR in the Middle East somewhere..

OzRunways 2.whoa!

Is it possible to get rid of the half hour switch tanks warning? It's really annoying.

Deadcut I was also being annoyed by them. I turned off all notifications for ozrunways in the notification centre in iPhone settings and they went away.

Apologies if this has been covered,

If I was to purchase iPad 2 with wifi + 3g, but use no sim or provider, can i still use this app? ie position, groundspeed etc?

Or would I need to sign up to telstra for instance or purchase the cellular type such as iPad air has built-in GPS???

iPad with cellular but with no SIM installed works well, except not able to get weather radar or metars.
But the map and continuous position on map works well.
I used to have this same set up, but then bought an iPad mini without cellular, and regret it - I have a separate Bluetooth GPS to link with the iPad, and it is ok but a nuisance to remember to charge up the GPS unit, and if i want to use the iPad for car navigation, I find it a hassle to get the Bluetooth GPS out, and set it up, etc. much less spontaneous to use. I guess I am just lazy.

Is Ozrunways becoming to complex?

When this app first appeared it was great. Now days it seems that way to much stuff is in it for geeks, making it less useful for pilots.

Here is my list of gripes: Every time I start it it wants to do a database update. It used to just start.

The fuel tank timer mentioned by deadcut, what is this? Anyone wanting this should perhaps not be flying. Why is the default on? Where is the info to turn it off without resorting to pprune forums?

I cannot get it to show area frequencies, I get two choices when I look and neither work, one remains blank the other says "no". It used to display the area frequency pretty well faultlessly.

Pressing the weather radar yesterday left me with a blank screen that took ages to get out of. It was an inadvertent press ...

It would seem that without undue study, the increasing complexities make my Garmin handheld and a bunch of maps way more superior for day to day flying.

Is it just me, or is this thing getting less user friendly by the day?

It's just you.

I'm reassured that there is ongoing development of OzRunways that it's not a dead-end sitting on the shelf.

A single iPad could replace your handheld Garmin, a fistful of maps that need to be updated and ERSA etc.

Now they are messing around with ADS-B In with a Raspberry Pi it's almost got TCAS.

Each new version has new features, but the main ergonomics stay unchanged so it's not too big a learning curve to pick up the changes.

Definite leap forward.

It's not.

I'm the biggest techie there is. OzRunways has got to the point where they had a great product, and are now spending too much time trying to make it even better by throwing features at it. It's now becoming too complex, too convoluted, and detracting from it's true purpose.

It's becoming an amateur product again.

Hmmm. I wonder if they sit at home, or lie awake in bed at night thinking "I wonder what feature we can throw at OzRunways"?

Or. Does the email inbox go boing, and there's an email from a techie saying, "Dear Mr OzRunways, I love your product but I'd love it even more if you added this, that, and the other to it."
