I own a copy of every type of iPad, and have been working with them from 2 months before they were available in Aus. Have rolled out several thousands of them over the past three years, lost count of the actual numbers, but I'm up to 600 odd this year (my day job is in education)

In all that time I've had just 2 DOA and 2 original iPads that suffered premature battery death. All replaced under warranty. Not bad quality control, you'd have to be unlucky to get a dud one.

They can also survive a hell of a beating and still be usable. I had one that was 'banana'd', glass all but destroyed, and still worked, but the home button was intermittent! (Didn't get warranty on that one!!!)

(Despite all that, my preferred backup is paper!)

Just noticed that whilst in nav mode it says in fine print at the bottom left hand corner that the map is not to scale, do not use for navigation. What's the go there? Based on that statement I assume you would need to also carry paper charts.

What are the legal technicalities of this?

WW that's modified in the next version to reflect the CASA approval of maps as a data source under CAR233. Don't have the exact text on me but its something like 'Not in native scale due zooming' and Mercator projection. Essentially don't measure the map with a ruler and expect distances to be 1:500k like the fixed size paper version.

Mercator projection means straight lines are Rhumb lines instead of approximating great circle (most of the maps come as Lambert Conformal Conic originally but that's no good for computers). The practical difference is minimal.

I'm stuck with paper as well as my iPads since the CP's word is law.

On a ligher note, don't do this with your iPad:

Oz Runways Weight and Balance

Hi all,
I am setting up a weight and balance through Oz Runways on my Ipad.
Ive got all my information entered but the ARM in inches doesn't add up to my paper version. I am wondering if anyone has set up a weight and balance for a Cessna172 on Oz Runways?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi this is probably best suited for help.ozrunways.com than its own thread here.

One for the OzRunways gurus...

The 250K Topographic map is listed as a 1.7GB (1652.6MB in OzRunways) download, but on trying to download the whole shebang, the IPad has blown past 2,000MB downloaded and was stopped at 2,300MB with no end in sight.

Reckon there's a glitch somewhere, or can't my iPad count?

Definitely 1.7gb - not sure what you're seeing there...if it doesn't work send me an email at help.ozrunways.com and we'll look into it further.

The files are hosted on the Akamai content delivery network (CDN) which is just about as certain as death & taxes to work properly.

I got it perfectly and it is impressive, best map on the program I reckon! Whoever would have thunk to include that. I have purchased maps for another App that aren't as good!

Thank you!

Buggered if I know what i did, but when I went to resume the download, I got a 'Complete, 1652.6 Used' message and a 'Delete' option straight away, and it appears to be working without problems.

Just for grins, I deleted the Topo map and re-downloaded it and it behaved as it should, so NFI what happened the first time.

Now onto the compliment...to whomever thought it would be a good idea to include the 250K Topo map, it is. Well done.

NZ maps tricky - they aren't offering much data down there. It's very expensive and no IFR stuff. Nowhere near the level of product offered by AsA.

We've imported all the waypoints and navaid data from official AIS databases in Europe. The terrain maps I made myself (I hope you like!) but we'll keep working on adding more as we can.

We've already got the airspace working for NZ. From the little cogs menu choose airspace and choose CTA, CRT and PRD. Then you can double-tap on the screen in NZ and select which airspace to choose from the list. The airspace should also show up in the horizontal terrain just like Australia.

We'll keep working on getting the official raster maps, but impossible to tell if we'll have any success.

OzRunways 2.whoa!

Hey guys, I have a wireless only ipad 4. Absolutely stoked with the app but, have trouble getting/maintaining a fix. After reading a few threads etc I have discovered that due to not having the "cell" model iPad, I should buy an external GPS receiver.

Any thoughts on which would be the best bluetooth receiver to buy for iPad 4?

Cheers!

OzRunways 2.whoa!

Thanks guys.

RS: how do you go with mounting the GLO? Does it need to be positioned on the dash with a clear view above and does it have a grippy bottom or suction cup?

Also, any recommended places to buy it?

Cheers

I'm with you Stallie...the Bad Elf has the 'pictorial' numbers which I find more 'convincing' than just a green light.....

ONYA oz.runways for the updates, and the service!!
