I see on the Air Niugini thread:
If true, Sharpie will be sadly missed by all who knew and worked with him during his life in Papua New Guinea, his sailing and those who knew him through his contribution to PPRuNe and this thread in particular.
Condolences to his wife and brother Doug.

That is really sad news. I only just finished reading and deleting a couple of email from him last night. very unexpected, and very very sad.

Captain Peter Sharpe RIP.
I had the pleasure of working with Peter at Pixie in the early 1980's, not to mention a bit of throat oil at various venues around Port Moresby with him.
A true gentleman and will be sadly missed.

Part of an email message from Subic Bay.....
Gentlemen,
Since I have written to you once before, in July, about Peter’s alleged trip to London, I have your email addresses, so I thought I should use them to pass on the very sad news that our good friend Peter died yesterday morning at 5 am in Subic Bay. He had been in and out of hospital with some minor complaints and a few tests, but sounded well on Saturday and was planning to come down to the Yacht Club on Sunday. However he didn’t make it.
I can’t tell you much more at the moment, but when I have more details I will pass them on. It seems that he may be moved to Manila on Tuesday.
I apologise if you already know, but thought it decent to write in case you had not been told.
He was a good mate and the very core of our sailing racing here in Subic Bay. He got four of us on the water about 5 years ago and we became the “Subic SAGS” (Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen’s Sailing). Currently races in Subic are now attended by many boats from Manila and we regularly have a dozen boats on the water. Not sure how we are going to do it without him, because he put so much time and competence into it! He will be sorely missed for any number of reasons.
I’ll keep in touch in the next day or so.

Damn shame!
Sharpie was a relentless fighter for the conditions and pays structure of all Air Niugini Pilots!
He was highly respected by the entire pilot group for his skills flying in PNG and preparedness to help out fellow Pilots.
A shame he never got to live a long and full life in his country of retirement.

I'm Pauline Peter Sharpe's daughter and sadly can confirm Dad passed away on the 13.9.9 - will be missed by us all - an incredible person, one of those special people you rarely have the opportunity to meet

PPRuNe Moderators know many of our registered members, although the members may not know us as Moderators. Some Moderators of this forum knew Peter, in my case for the past forty years. I also visited him at his retirement home in Subic a few years ago.

His passing is a loss to all who knew him and to our PPRuNe community.

Thank you for the heads up on the site protocol. I just wanted to make you all aware that Dad had passed away as I am sure he influenced many lives to the extent he did mine.
I must say, I find it enriching to communicate with those who knew Dad as he was my Mentor and I am very sure I would not have achieved the special things I have in my life so far = competing at the World Duathlon Championships for NZ, becoming one of the top dressage riders in NZ, becoming a Finance Director of one of the largest advertising companies in Australasia - none of this would have been achievable without the guidance of "Sharpie". He taught me to never give up, when someone said it couldn't be done, meant it could ... I could keep going with underlining his qualitites. I know he will be missed by many. I know for sure when you die there is only one thing you take with you - the love. Dad love you heaps and will think of you every day

You are blessed with your Mum's genes! The thought of Sharpie astride a horse defies even the greatest imagination.
But indeed, it appears you inherited your Dad's fight and determination!

I worked with Sharpie for 13 years and his memory will always bring a smile.
A big champion for what he thought was right and a dogged determination that would frustrate all.
Passionate about all things Flying, PNG, Sailing and his Mates. He had a love hate (big love small hate) relationship with ANG which we were all entitled too but worked tirelessly for ANG's welfare and prosperity.
If he thought something wasn't right he spoke up BIG time, if no one would listen he would put his own time and money on the line to right the wrong.
He would not stand back and listen when PNG was criticised particularly by those who knew little of the country.
PNG and ANG have lost one of the truly few characters that made working there such a wonderful experience.
Quite a few beers should be raised for having had the opportunity to know and work with Sharpie.
I will make sure it's an SP for having known the red faced little bull terrier.

Sharpie gone without a fight ? Impossible.
The Grim Reaper must surely have snuck up on him without warning.
As a young ATC in PNG Peter was never slow in "chipping" me for any perceived error in my procedures and he was usually right
Many an enjoyable hour was spent at the Derro and the Yachtie discussing the error of my ways and how I should have done it.
You will be sorely missed Pete!
May your God provide you with an endless supply of "coldies" and a stiff breeze.
