air pacific...anyone?
air pacific...anyone? i've been trying to find info about Air Pacific.
Since they have a pretty vague name, its kinda hard to google them, as well as search forums such as pprune and flight info. They have bases in SYD, AKL and BNE.
Anybody work there or know someone who does? How many days off? How do they treat expats?
ANY information would be appreciated.

OK, before the tirades begin...
I currently fly 737-800s out of Guam. I can take a company offered leave of absence for 18 months to save someone else from getting furloughed. I would love to see Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
This kind of seems like a win-win scenario for me. I can't really find anything out about the company itself, except for the one thread on this board. Seems like there is a bunch of management bashing...well, I have worked for some pretty crappy companies in the past. Not looking for a career, just a break to go explore part of the world I would otherwise not be able to see. While it seems no one likes the guys in charge, how are the pilots? How are the work rules? How many days off a month? How long is training? Would I be seen as a yank stealing a local guys job? Of course, there are plenty of Australians working with me up here. Seems like it would be a dip in pay, but the experience gained might make it worth it.
That being said, would it worthwhile for a single guy with no ties to take a chance on this company?

Air Pacific
I flew with them from fiji to los angeles in 2005 they seemed a good airline 747 good entertainment and food. Flight attendants were very friendy and efficient. they are part of the alliance family they were part of my flight rotation. qantas, air pacific, american airlines, and finally british airways

I've had a few dealings with Air Pacific with my work, in which they always seem very friendly and helpful.
The UK rep for them is fantastic and i've never had any problems with them.
They operate quite possibly the most colourful 744's ever!

Previously you would have been taking someone elses place in the company but with so many drivers leaving for o/s, you may not be stepping on too many toes. But then again, someone will always complain.
From my experience the other drivers themselves are pretty good blokes.
As for other current work conditions, will leave it to someone in the know...

Yeah, the only results that i got from googling them was from wikipedia. i know payrates. i just don't know anything about company culture, schedules, crew, and bases. what are they like, affordable, doable for a year?
ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated.

The comments on these threads are REAL. Put it this way - 40% of the local pilots have left. Contractors turnover at 50%/ year. The last bunch of Aloha pilots have ALL left - some without completing their training.

have you worked there? so far, i haven't come across anyone that has actually worked there. it does sound like a "stepping stone" for people to build time and move on. if that is the case, then i'm not surprised anyone stays. if people are leaving because of living conditions or the people they work with, maintenance issues, schedules well, that would shed new light.
like i said, not looking for a career there. only wanna hang out for a year and check the countries out. i just don't want to be miserable while at work.
i worked at some pretty sh###y places before with management that i could do without. i can suck it up for a year if the people are great and the traveling while over there is worth it. i don't have to have late night picnics with management, just wanna toss some back with great crews.
Anyone actually work there that has some advice?

Hiya Bulabandit,
thanks for the replies at least. yeah i can read, just hoping the glass was at least a quarter full type of guy. i kinda picked up that they had sh**ty management. just willing to put up them the undesirables to work with a fun flight deck crew and cabin crew. seems like the worse the ceos are the more everyone else pulls together in the airplane.
just really wanted to explore the area for a year. thought t would be great to live and experience any of those countries. i still haven't read specific wrongdoings of mngment, so i was hoping it was your run of the mill rumours when new guys work for their first crappy company. either way, i won't get any new replies in the instructor/student pilot forum.

if what you say is true about wanting to experience something different and seeing different places and meeting new people,then Air Pac will suite you well,I'm sure by now you have gathered that the money is not too good,but if that is not a real factor then its fine.I being one of the locals left some time back but that was for personal reasons,i had the pleasure of of working with some great guys,expats and locals alike.Sure there are some flaws along the way in terms of management and a few disgruntled pilots,but i'm sure its the same anywhere you go.
So give it a go,it will be well worth the time,and while you are there have a nice cold FIJI BITTER for me.
