Stolen Garmin 96 - $200 reward

I recently (18th April) left my portable garmin96 GPS in MVG at YSBK.
By the time I had realised what I had done it was a good 24 hours later.
The aircraft was crosshired to Proflite the following day and several flights were conducted in it. Somewhere during this day the unit left the aircraft....
(I have spoken with Proflite they claim they saw the unit but placed it in the back seat pocket.) Please I am not blaming Proflite at all nor am I accusing them of anything but this is were the my trail ended and I think it's fair to let people know this fact in order to help me track down the unit.

I am offering a $200 cash reward for info that helps me find the person who took the unit.
My unit had several of the buttons peeling off. It also had my mobile number appear on the screen when you turned the unit on.
The unit has been reported as stolen to Garmin so the aviation database can not be upgraded.
Serial number is 74301176.

If the person who took this unit, who has not done the right thing and returned it, thinking that i'm not going to try and track them down, think again. I have given you more than enough time! I am sure some struggling student/instructor would more be more than happy to make a quick two hundred dollars for an anonomous tip. If you would like to return it no questions asked, then please drop it into Pacific Flight services (aka Crane Air) or mail it to "PO Box CP20 Condell Park NSW 2200" they will make sure it gets back to the owner. Say you found it or something I dont care.
However if you would instead like to explain your actions to the police then please keep the unit and I am sure someone will see it or has seen you with it recently and would like the $200 cash.

Please send me any information to [email protected] or message me through PPRUNE.

Also report it to the local police. Police want theft reported in case there is a pattern involved, although yours was probably a theft of opportunity.

I checked the plane the day after and it was gone. SAC were very helpful and no they did not see it the day after either. I also spoke with the owner of MVG and no one handed it into him either.

I know its partly my fault for being so stupid leaving it in the plane but I didn't think someone would be so rude as to take it when it had a 'if found contact 0414...." on the boot up screen.

Hopefully the thief will realise that I won't let this go until I find him/her and have them charged, unless the now useless unit is handed back.

You never know, it could've just dropped out on the tarmac and now it's either waiting for its owner to pick it off the ground or it's in bits and pieces..

Just a mere thought.

Or maybe someone unwittingly picked it up and took it with them, as so often seemed to always happen with items in C 152 seat back pockets. Albeit with the amount of pockets in a bird like MVG, things are bound to go missing...

Anyway excuse my ramblings, just trying to help find a rational explanation for its disappearance. Not everything that goes missing is stolen yanno'. Must go look for the TV remote now...

Bankstownboy,
I agree - that was my first thought. It was confirmed however that it was in the aircraft the following day.
Several people have since messaged me with information. I now have a good idea of who took it and this is my last warning to the thief.

If the unit is not returned by Wednesday this week, I will be passing the information I have been given onto the police. A police record never looks good on any pilots resumee.
I understand that maybe it was taken by accident and forgotten about, you have my word that if it is returned by Wednesday no charges will be laid. I think this is more than fair, as I have better things to do with my time then front up at court and hear some sob story.

And thanks to all those who passed on information to me. I will of course honor the $200 to the person(s) who gave me information that gets the unit returned there have been a few so I may have to split it between you - I will ask the police which piece of information was the most valuable.

Surely it is not rocket science to look at the aircraft MR or owners hire records, see who has been using the aircraft since you last flew it and contact them?

And I'm sure it would be a lot more polite than all the threats in here?

You dont think that was the first course of action I took???
Threats?? - come on. How is going to the police about stolen property a threat?? I think I am being more than fair.
I would like to know what you would do if you found out who stole an $1200 ($400 worth of software loaded) piece of equipment from you. Go straight to the police I bet.
I am giving this guy a chance to do the right thing - no questions asked.

You seem to have a suspicion about who has it, why not ASK THEM?
How is going to the police about stolen property a threat?? I think I am being more than fair.
By saying that a police record doesn't look good on a pilots record!!
I agreee with other posters and think that you are being threatening!

If you know who did it, then approach them and TAKE ACTION!

Making an example of them on proon doesn't really help, chances are they dont even read proon!

NB: Just in case, a note to any aspiring pilots out there, a criminal conviction will actually end your career, as you will no longer be able to hold an ASIC!

As HH has mentioned, you seem to have clue of the person who "took" your unit, well the best thing is to take action!!

To be honest, nothing against the police though...they got more important things to worry about rather than searching for your GPS....so might as well the the action yourself, action in a good manner i suppose~~

I am deeply sorry to those who saw this as a threat. I see it as more of an amnesty as do the friends, colleagues and a friend of mine in the police force, who I consulted with before taking this action. I guess everyone see things differently.

Why have I not confronted the individual and taken action? Well that is a morally complex issue. What if the information given to me is incorrect? What if they have been set up? How does one go about saying 'excuse me but some people who wish to remain anonymous at this stage say you took something of mine that wasn't yours.' After all there is a reward at stake. I am no judge or jury I can't accuse someone of stealing - that is for the officials to do after they consider the evidence. Anything else would be slander.

But if I go to the authorities, I could ruin this person’s career and ambitions...over a silly mistake of taking something that they my have thought was left and forgotten about.... I like to think that I give people a fair go and truly believe that everyone deserves a second chance. And that’s why I took this approach.

At the same time though do I just sit back and let someone take something that took me months of work to save up for? It has now been several months - plenty of time I would think to have done the right thing.

Perhaps they do not read PPRuNEe. This is why I am also putting notices up on notice boards around Bankstown.

Again, apologies to those who misunderstood my intentions and don't see the moral dilemma that I am in.

Of course I would be open to other suggestions that would not see this individual take such a big fall over a silly mistake.

And no, the unit has not been returned.

Grow a pair and ask him/her. Just be prepared to 'block' if you're wrong.

BK seems to have more than its fair share of crooks - I've heard of so many of these stories - and too many 'honest' folk couldn't give a stuff. When you ask around 'nobody knows nothing'. You'd think if someone saw it, the least they could do is put it safe somewhere until the owner came back looking for it. I 'lost' a flight bag there with headdsets, GPS, logbooks the lot. It was hidden locked up in a car on one of the busiest flying school's carpark on a Saturday afternoon. Once you let anything out of your sight at BK you might as well good bye to it. (Another good reason for not going there at all) You have my sympathy Capt!

I'm with the Captain. Nothing is worse than people stealing, it is getting much worse. I feel the amnesty was more than fair.
