It was of course, Whale Island... enroute to White Island.
Actually even looks a bit like a whale from that angle.... big body on the left, with the tail on the right...

YouTube finally relented and allowed me to actually view your vid...
Very nice... must have been awfully tempting to do a bit more than "rock the wings" heading out towards Rangitoto

I do believe that the DH Dragon Rapid is for sale! very nice aircraft,
and while im feeling nostalgic, heres a few photos of Hoxton Park, a Fantastic airfield and the base of my first paid flying job..
Sadly it will no longer exist as of Next Monday. pics are from my last days flying out of there..

the bowser was removed last week... so its an extra $25 to refuel from the truck..

Ahhh the Memories! close formation circuits....no radio calls, it will be missed.

My last ever landing at Hoxton Park. YHOX. Runway 34

Goodnight From YHOX. It was a Fantastic Airfield, and full of fantastic memories, from downright scary, to beautiful 15kt crosswind landings coming over the trees! watching suburbia creep ever closer of the last 17yrs, and even the relationships with the instructors flying the Beechcraft Skippers built up over the radio and in the circuit. ahhh good times..
YHOX, Signing off.
drinks time.

Not strictly aviation related... but I did fly into and out of the location and I wanted to show off the panorama that I (aka: Adobe Photoshop) stitched together... Not too bad for a crappy 2megapixel cellphone!

The afternoon sea-breezes seemed to catch a few unsuspecting pilots who choose to make seaward approachs... with 15+kt tailwinds

ps. hint: the airfield is about 1/4 mile to the right of the pic... next to the golf course
EDIT: J3... have you got a super hi-res version (1600x1200 or better) of that last pic?? My desktop wants to give it a good home
