Di_Vosh, what a disgraceful insult! The old Caribou is a superior and well designed aircraft. Many talented people spent years creating this machine and it is almost irreplacable in the role it performs (Buffalo could replace it).

Please everyone - a little more respect for the Caribou and especially the Buffalo would be appreciated.

Allow me to rephrase that.

Apologies to any Bou drivers out there.

But...
The old Caribou
Says it all.

Yes, they were a FANTASTIC aircraft, but are well past their use-by date.

My comment came from frustration: The last three times I tried to jump out of (or dispatch) from one they either:
Couldn't leave QLD as the aircraft had a "fault".
Got to Nowra and THEN the aircraft had a "fault".
Got the "fault" fixed but then had a flat tyre.
Flew another Bou down to Nowra with the spare tyre, but (Nowra being Nowra) we were blown out and couldn't jump.
I agree that there is little out there that could do it's job as well.

Wasn't it the case that they looked at Cape Leeuwin & Wilson's Prom before moving PTS but couldn't find a suitable airport?!?!? They had to settle for the next windiest place ......

Not too old

The Caribou, like many of our GA aircraft is a very ggod aircraft for it's purpose, but our third world aircraft maintenance system can only function with new aircraft.

We have many good people, but very little good maintenance.

I cringed at the Di_Vosh comment, however it was tongue in cheek

We had a saying,

If you want to have a good time.... take a Bou
If you want to get there on time.... take an airline

The Bou has character... reminds me of an e-mail floating around....

We gotta get rid of those turbines, they're ruining aviation and our hearing...

A turbine is too simple minded, it has no mystery. The air travels through it in a straight line and doesn't pick up any of the pungent fragrance of engine oil or pilot sweat.

Anybody can start a turbine. You just need to move a switch from "OFF" to "START" and then remember to move it back to "ON" after a while. My PC is harder to start.

Cranking a round engine requires skill, finesse and style. You have to seduce it into starting. It's like waking up a horny mistress. On some planes, the pilots aren't even allowed to do it...

Turbines start by whining for a while, then give a lady-like poof and start whining a little louder.

Round engines give a satisfying rattle-rattle, click-click, BANG, more rattles, another BANG, a big macho FART or two, more clicks, a lot more smoke and finally a serious low pitched roar. We like that. It's a GUY thing...

When you start a round engine, your mind is engaged and you can concentrate on the flight ahead. Starting a turbine is like flicking on a ceiling fan: Useful, but, hardly exciting.

When you have started his round engine successfully your Crew Chief looks up at you like he'd let you kiss his girl, too!

Turbines don't break or catch fire often enough, which leads to aircrew boredom, complacency and inattention. A round engine at speed looks and sounds like it's going to blow any minute. This helps concentrate the mind !

Turbines don't have enough control levers or gauges to keep a pilot's attention. There's nothing to fiddle with during long flights.

Turbines smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman Lamps. Round engines smell like God intended machines to smell.

Pass this on to an old WWII guy (or his son, or anyone who flew them, ever) in remembrance of that "Greatest Generation".

Used a Nikon F60 with 28 to 105 zoom for these but now dragged into the new world and use a Fujifilm finepix A340 digital ..easier lighter and takes basically as good.

Nice photos I guess but any chance of changing the scenery from boring red dust, flies and featureless desert country to some with lush green grass and lots of views of South Pacific atolls?

XAJ...... I have a twitch starting.... a spasm.... a returning condition that used to occur every time that XAJ machine sat out front of the hangar and Ross used to ask us to "have another look at the landing gear"

Was always fun using crackle power for first light departures in the F28...whether we needed to or not.

Hell, we were awake...EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD BE TOO!!!

Would have been particularly memorable for the people staying at The Madang Resort Hotel middle right just seawards of the docks off the end of 07...hence we always used 07 at sparrows fart too...for maximum psycological effect
