Whatever happened to Barry (The Phantom) Walker? Knew him from the Kieta Hotel. The Group he worked for at the time used to buy the old run-down pubs, put Barry in, and he'd turn them around.
Silly Old Git
Barry if I recall, is in the big Skull Cave in the sky.Torres would know.
There was the other Phantom, a Mr Walker who was a kiap. Signed all his mail with a rubber skull ring stamp had a dog named Devil and called the locals "The Little people"
I believe in his Kingdom, there was no shortage of left handed bush tobacco

Last time I saw the Phantom he was managing the Kieta Hotel maybe in the early 1980s.
He died reasonably young many years ago, maybe in the early to mid 1990s? Don't remember the details now.
Wonder hopw many remember the Magistrate in Goroka through the 1960s and up to approximately 1970? He had a dog named Sam who came to Court. The Magistrate would hear a case then ask:
"What do you think Sam?"
"Woof, woof"
"Two weeks. Take the prisoner away."
He'd ask the defendent if he had anything to say in his defence and when the poor sod tried to speak in Pigin, the Magistrate would cut him off with "I'll have none of that primitive prattle in my Court House."
He was eventually "invited" to leave PNG after it was discovered he was Goroka's Peeping Tom! I could tell many stories about that Magistrate.
The next Magistrate was ex Kiap Rick Giddings who is now retired and living in Tasmania. Up to the last Tasmanian Elections Rick's daughter Lara was the Deputy Premier of Tasmania.
There was certainly some characters in PNG!!

After Kieta the Phantom was the manager at a hotel in Kavieng. He visited Cairns quite often... and was at my office door early mornings busting for a white can!! He died in Brisbane a couple of years later.

Torres....The Gillies bar as I know it, is upstairs above the ground level bar on the corner, got to admit I have never been in that bar,for the life of me I can't think why we never went down there......Friday nights was club night at the Gillies and when the key draw got to around K1000 out came the Kiwi's...I could never understand why my fellow country people would only come when the key draw was worth a few bucks, maybe because the exchange rate was quite good back then...I know I doubled my pay packet when I first went up there.
Kiwis. Proof Taswegians can swim!
Tinpis bought a property in Tasmania. I understand he's tracing his roots.
Ahhh, Tasmania. Half a million people, ten surnames......
Brothers, Merve and Les Gillies were WWII veterans who settled in Goroka and owned a small building company, their final workshop was behind the Pacific Helicopters hangar. "Sparrow" worked with them for many years.
They had great personalities, always good for a joke and a laugh. When I first met them they drank rum and milk and as they couldn't afford a fridge, it was Capt Morgan Rum, Sunshine powdered milk, stir and add water!
I remember Les went to Jack Thick's timber yard near the Teacher's College in Goroka (next door to the Talair Stone Houses) to get some 4 x 2 timber. Les picked over the timber then said to Jack Thick in his slow drawl:
"Jack, you better take this all down to Air Niugini."
"Why is that?" asked Jack.
"It'd make bloody good prepellors" replied Les.
Jack Thick had a couple of ex WWII GMC 6x4 trucks that he and Poppa Raasch used to recover Bobby Gibbes Junkers Ju52 from Wau in the late 50's, after Peter Manser demolished the Qantas Airport office in one of his better Junkers landings.

Wouldnīt it rather have sounded like: "Bloody why is bloody that?" At least that is what I remember of Jack Thick the two times I met him. Every second word was
Yes, Jack had a limited vocabulary and a way with words!
That is Jack, back on in the second photo. The trucks are a Studebaker and a GMC.
Bobby Gibbes died in April 2007 but Jeannie is alive and well in Sydney.

Its great when things don't change. I flew over Moresby before dawn this morning en route AKL - BWN and my colleague decided to monitor the ATIS. No ATIS just a massage to contact GRND or TWR for the weather - the same message they have been playing every morning for as long as I can remember. My colleague was surprised so I told him about going into the TWR for flight planning before dawn one morning nearly 20 years ago. After rousing them from their slumbers on the floor,
"Moning tru, nogat weather?"
"No"
"How come?"
"it is dark"
We asked for it and it was finally relayed to us about half way to Kikori - I couldn't help but smile.
Oh and WW the most popular rental videos played on community TVs in the settlements in my time were Rambo and Chuck Norris vids. I doubt that has changed either.

Rambo and Chuck Norris movies are used as educational material in some villages of PNG.
