Last time I saw the Phantom he was managing the Kieta Hotel maybe in the early 1980s.
He died reasonably young many years ago, maybe in the early to mid 1990s? Don't remember the details now.
Wonder hopw many remember the Magistrate in Goroka through the 1960s and up to approximately 1970? He had a dog named Sam who came to Court. The Magistrate would hear a case then ask:
"What do you think Sam?"
"Woof, woof"
"Two weeks. Take the prisoner away."
He'd ask the defendent if he had anything to say in his defence and when the poor sod tried to speak in Pigin, the Magistrate would cut him off with "I'll have none of that primitive prattle in my Court House."
He was eventually "invited" to leave PNG after it was discovered he was Goroka's Peeping Tom! I could tell many stories about that Magistrate.
The next Magistrate was ex Kiap Rick Giddings who is now retired and living in Tasmania. Up to the last Tasmanian Elections Rick's daughter Lara was the Deputy Premier of Tasmania.
There was certainly some characters in PNG!!
